Measure the framed ceiling opening in both directions, then check ceiling height, ladder swing clearance and landing space. A replacement is a fit only when all of those measurements—and the installation site—meet the requirements for that exact ladder model.
What to measure before choosing a replacement
Gather a tape measure and record each measurement separately. Note which opening dimension runs parallel to the ladder’s length, and use the replacement model’s instructions to confirm exactly where to measure.
- Rough-opening width and length
- Finished floor-to-ceiling height, or the alternate reference specified by the ladder instructions
- Unobstructed space for the ladder sections to swing down
- Usable floor space where the ladder will land
Measure the rough opening
If you can access the framing, measure the opening from inside edge to inside edge in both directions. Record width and length; do not use the outside dimensions of the trim or the visible hatch panel as a substitute for the structural opening. Werner’s measurement guide says to measure the rough opening’s width and length, but the reference edges can depend on construction and product instructions. Check the installation manual for the ladder you are considering. (Werner: Know Your Dimensions)
Do not assume a nominal size is universal. Werner describes 22.5 × 54 inches as a standard rough opening while noting that homes can have wider or smaller openings; its FAQ lists multiple standard sizes. These are Werner examples, not a rule that every ladder or house follows. (Werner Attic Ladders FAQ)

Measure height and clearance
Ceiling height
Measure vertically from the finished floor to the finished ceiling. For some small attic openings, Werner says the measurement may instead run from the finished floor to the attic floor. The correct reference depends on the ladder type and its instructions, so use the reference specified for your candidate model. (Werner: Know Your Dimensions)
Swing clearance
Measure the unobstructed space beyond the opening that the ladder sections need as they swing down. This is a separate fit requirement from opening size; use the model’s stated clearance rather than estimating from another ladder.

Landing space
Measure usable floor space from the back of the opening toward the front, and check whether furniture, walls or other obstructions would interfere with climbing on or off the ladder. Compare this space with the selected model’s landing-space requirement.
Compare every measurement with the exact ladder model
Check the product specifications and current installation manual for the required opening width and length, permitted floor-to-ceiling range, swing clearance, landing space and any framing or site conditions. A model-specific example shows why: Werner lists the AH2510C for a 25 × 54 in opening and a floor-to-ceiling range of 7 ft 8 in to 10 ft 3 in. Those figures apply to that model; they do not establish that it fits a different opening. (Werner AH2510C product page)

- Fits AA2210, AA2211, AEE2210, FTAL2211, FTAA2210. This is NOT a universal ladder section, please confirm model before purchase.

For another example, Werner’s AH2210, AH2510 and AE2210 installation manual specifies 5 ft 10 in of swing clearance, 4 ft 0 in to 5 ft 3 in of landing space, and a floor-to-ceiling range from 7 ft 8 in minimum to 10 ft 3 in maximum. These values are specific to the models covered by that manual, which may not be the current instructions for a ladder you buy. Confirm the manual for the exact product. Once the dimensions fit, selection still involves other considerations such as material, rated capacity, installation skills and applicable local building codes. Werner recommends reviewing these alongside the product specifications. (Werner: How to Choose an Attic Ladder)

A ladder that matches the opening dimensions can still be unsuitable if the framing or space above it creates a hazard. Inspect the supporting joists and look for electrical wire, pipes, heating or cooling ducts, furnaces, water heaters and other obstructions. Werner’s installation manual warns about electrical hazards; use the manual for the specific ladder and have structural changes or utility work handled by an appropriately qualified professional. When the opening does not match
Do not treat a near match as a confirmed fit. Compare the actual opening and all clearance measurements against another model’s documented requirements. If you are considering alterations to the framing or utilities, get qualified advice before proceeding; the ladder manual and applicable local requirements govern the installation. Werner also identifies model-specific replacement feet and an installation/trim kit in its FAQ, but parts must match the ladder model and the repair need. (Werner Attic Ladders FAQ)
