How to Make Your Home More Energy Efficient Before Adding Solar or Battery Storage

Assess the home first, address diagnosed leaks and insulation needs, then choose major equipment using the updated heating and cooling load. Solar and battery timing depends on the home and local conditions.

Start with a home energy assessment, then address the air leaks and insulation problems it identifies before choosing major heating and cooling equipment. A tighter, better-insulated home may need less heating and cooling, which can affect future heat-pump sizing. Solar panels and batteries do not automatically have to wait for every renovation: the right sequence depends on the house, the project and local utility rules.

Start with an assessment, not a shopping list

A professional home energy assessment can identify cost-effective improvements and potential safety issues. The U.S. Department of Energy calls an evaluation a wise first step; ENERGY STAR recommends a comprehensive professional audit to pinpoint solutions and hazards. Ask the auditor to prioritize findings for your home’s climate, construction, condition and budget rather than applying a generic upgrade list.

Before the assessment, note rooms that feel drafty or unusually hot or cold, changes in heating and cooling bills, visible gaps around doors or windows, and what you know about attic insulation. These are useful clues, not a substitute for diagnosis. Appropriate insulation levels vary by climate zone and building assembly.

Fix the building envelope where the assessment finds a problem

The building envelope separates conditioned indoor space from outdoors. It includes the roof, walls, floors, foundation, windows and doors. Air can leak at joints, openings and places where pipes, wiring or other components pass through the structure.

Minute and hour data are retained in the cloud. 1 minute data is retained 7 days, 1 hour data is retained indefinitely. Export cloud data whenever you want in the app.

Air-seal suitable gaps

Caulk is generally suited to stationary cracks and joints. Weatherstripping is for moving parts, such as doors and operable windows. A weatherstripping kit may be a manageable DIY project when it fits the door, gap and surface; it will not address hidden leaks, moisture damage or other problems an assessment identifies. ENERGY STAR says sealing leaks and adding insulation can provide up to 10% savings on annual energy bills, but that is a broad maximum—not a prediction for an individual home (ENERGY STAR’s Seal and Insulate guidance).

Insulate where it is needed

Attics are a common place to investigate, but the right work may involve walls, floors, foundations or ducts, depending on the home. Do not choose a target R-value from a national rule of thumb alone. DOE’s 2024 guidance gives 2021 IECC ceiling examples of R-30 for climate zone 1, R-49 for zones 2–3, and R-60 for zones 4–8; these are code criteria in that guidance, not universal retrofit prescriptions. Existing insulation, the assembly and local conditions matter (DOE’s insulation and air-sealing guidance).

Bring in a professional when attic work may be unsafe

Have a qualified professional evaluate conditions before attic air-sealing if insulation is wet, mold or rotted framing is present, vents exhaust into the attic, ventilation appears inadequate, access is difficult, or knob-and-tube wiring is present. These conditions can involve moisture, ventilation, electrical or access risks; sealing around them without addressing the underlying issue can create problems. ENERGY STAR outlines these cautions in its Attic Air Sealing Project guidance.

Plan heating and cooling upgrades after load-reducing work

When the assessment identifies envelope improvements, plan to complete them at the same time as or before funding mechanical or appliance upgrades where practical. DOE explains that reducing heating and cooling loads can reduce the size and cost of a later heat pump and improve comfort. Some utility programs also require or recommend weatherization before HVAC upgrades. The useful sequence is therefore assessment, diagnosed envelope work, then heating and cooling selection using the updated load—not automatically replacing equipment based on the home’s pre-upgrade condition (DOE’s Home Energy Rebates guidance).

Compare proposals against the home’s actual needs

Before approving weatherization or equipment work, compare proposals using the same practical questions:

  • What specific problem did the assessment identify, and what work will address it?
  • What energy reduction is estimated or modeled, and what assumptions does that estimate use?
  • What are the project and expected maintenance costs, and what disruption will the work cause?
  • Is the proposed material or method suitable for the home’s climate, construction and moisture conditions?
  • Does the work affect comfort or noise, and how will contractor qualifications and scope be verified?
  • Which rebates may apply, what are their local requirements, and must approval happen before work starts?
  • If heating or cooling equipment is included, is its sizing based on the expected load after envelope work?

Solar and battery decisions need a separate, site-specific evaluation. Local utility rates, compensation for exported electricity, outage goals and the home’s design all matter. Without those inputs, a general article cannot establish an ideal system size or payback.
