To limit road-construction dust indoors, close exposed windows and doors when dust is high, reduce obvious air gaps where safe, filter and damp-clean indoor air and surfaces, and ask the project team what dust controls it uses. If you feel vibration, keep a dated record and contact the road authority or contractor with concerns. Feeling vibration alone does not show that your home is being damaged; the project team and a qualified building professional are better placed to assess specific risks.
Keep construction dust from entering your home
Outdoor particles can enter through open doors and windows as well as small gaps and cracks. Home measures can reduce entry and clean settled dust, but they cannot guarantee a dust-free home; dust suppression at the work site is primarily the project team’s responsibility.
Close openings when dust is high
During visibly dusty periods, close windows and external doors on the affected side when practical. Preserve safe ventilation, and follow applicable guidance for combustion appliances. Sealing a home without considering ventilation can create other indoor-air problems.
Where appropriate, removable sealing products can help address obvious gaps around windows and doors. Avoid permanent changes that could affect emergency exits, ventilation, warranties, or rental obligations. The US EPA identifies small openings and cracks as routes for particles and describes air-sealing as a way to reduce outdoor-air infiltration; this is not a road-construction-specific guarantee. US EPA guidance on indoor particulate matter.

It can be used in any doorway of home, workshop, office, basement, closet, etc. It is a necessary dustproof tool for home renovations, construction site. IMPORTANT: PLEASE MEASURE the DOOR SIZE FIRST!
Choose filtration that fits the space or system
A portable air cleaner can be a supplemental option for airborne particles in an occupied room. Compare its clean-air delivery rate with the room size, and consider noise, replacement-filter availability, and maintenance costs. No air cleaner removes every pollutant, as the EPA explains in its Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home.
For central HVAC, use a higher-efficiency filter only if the system manufacturer permits it. Check that the filter fits and meets airflow requirements, and replace it on the manufacturer’s schedule. A room air cleaner treats air locally; an HVAC filter works through the central system when it operates. Neither replaces dust control at the source.

Clean settled dust without putting it back into the air
Damp-dust surfaces, and consider a vacuum with a HEPA filter. The EPA says dampening dust helps keep it from returning to the air, while a HEPA vacuum can reduce some vacuumed dust escaping back into the room. See the EPA’s particle-source and cleaning guidance.
Ask the project team about site controls
If dust repeatedly crosses the property boundary or settles indoors, contact the project team or road authority. Ask what dust-suppression measures and monitoring are in place and how to report recurring problems. UK guidance for major road schemes addresses controls for delivery partners and contractors; it describes project-level responsibilities, not duties for homeowners. Understand what noticeable vibration can—and cannot—tell you
Feeling vibration does not by itself establish that a building is being damaged. Perception and transmission can vary with the ground, building construction, work activity, and source. The UK environmental-permit guidance also notes that rattling windows can be excited by airborne sound, not only ground-borne vibration. These factors are reasons not to diagnose a property from sensation alone, not proof that a particular home is unaffected. UK environmental-permit guidance on noise and vibration.
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi notes that people can feel vibration associated with road-surface defects and describes assessing construction vibration against cosmetic-damage criteria. Its FAQ says it does not routinely monitor noise at individual properties as part of its approach; that is an agency practice, not a promise about what another project will do. Read NZTA’s noise and vibration FAQ.

What to ask the road authority or contractor
Use the contact listed on the project notice or the local road authority’s website. Ask for practical details in writing if possible; assessment methods, complaint routes, and services differ by project and location.
- Which current or upcoming tasks may produce vibration, and when are they scheduled?
- What vibration assessment or monitoring is being used, where are measurements taken, and can residents receive relevant readings or results?
- How can residents report a concern, and what is the escalation route if the first response does not resolve it?
- Is a pre-work property-condition survey available for nearby homes, and what eligibility rules apply?
- What dust suppression and monitoring are in place, and how should repeated dust crossing the boundary be reported?
NZTA describes possible approaches that include equipment trials, calculations, and measurements at or near potentially at-risk locations. Victoria’s Big Build describes an independent property-condition survey offer for eligible properties on its project. These are examples of project practices, not services every authority provides. NZTA’s FAQ and Victoria’s Big Build guidance explain their respective approaches.

Document changes and respond to possible damage
- Keep a dated log. Note when vibration occurs, what work is taking place if known, and what you notice inside or outside.
- Photograph apparent changes. If a new crack or other change appears, take dated photographs from consistent angles and keep them with your log.
- Report the concern. Use the project’s published contact route, describe what changed and when, and request a reference number or written response where available.
- Get qualified advice when warranted. If you see new cracking, movement, falling material, or another apparent structural change, prioritize safety and seek advice from a qualified building professional. Contact emergency services if there is immediate danger.
A consumer vibration meter cannot diagnose structural damage. Project-specific thresholds, monitoring arrangements, complaint procedures, and survey eligibility depend on location and project; check the project notice or local road authority rather than assuming a universal standard.
Choose indoor controls by what they can do
| Control | What it does | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Portable air cleaner | Filters air in the room where it is used. | Room-size suitability and clean-air delivery rate, noise, replacement-filter supply and cost, and maintenance. |
| Central HVAC filter | Filters air through the central system when it runs. | System-manufacturer compatibility, permitted filtration level, fit, and airflow requirements. |
| Damp dusting and HEPA-filtered vacuuming | Removes settled dust from surfaces and floors. | Use damp cleaning; maintain the vacuum and its filter as directed by the manufacturer. |
| Closing openings and removable sealing | Can reduce entry through doors, windows, and obvious gaps. | Keep safe ventilation and egress; consider rental obligations and avoid unsuitable permanent alterations. |
For vibration concerns, compare project responses by assessment timing, monitoring locations, access to results, reporting and escalation paths, and whether an independent pre-work survey is offered. Do not assume another project follows the same practices as NZTA or Victoria’s Big Build.
Why local project details matter
Dust and indoor-air recommendations here draw on US EPA guidance; the vibration examples come from New Zealand, UK, and Victoria, Australia sources. They describe useful mechanisms and specific agency or project practices, not one global legal standard. Work hours, permissible levels, agency contacts, complaint escalation, and survey eligibility depend on your location and project. EPA advice about containing dust during building renovation can inform general dust-control thinking, but it is not a tested protocol for an occupied home beside road construction. EPA steps for safe renovation and repair.
