What Happens to Smart Home Devices When the Internet Goes Down?

An internet outage does not automatically disable every smart home device. Local control may continue if the router and compatible controller remain available; cloud-dependent features may not.

When the internet goes down, smart home devices do not all stop working. Devices that can communicate with a local controller over a still-running home network may continue to respond; devices that need a manufacturer’s cloud service may lose app control, remote access, or integrations. The key is to distinguish an internet outage from a router, hub, or power failure.

What an internet outage changes—and what it does not

Your internet connection links the home network to online services. It is separate from the router and Wi-Fi network inside the home. If the broadband connection fails but the router stays on, devices on the local network may still communicate with one another. Google says commands to Matter devices issued from home can travel locally over Wi-Fi or Thread without cloud routing (Google Home and Nest Help).

That local path only helps when the device, controller, app, and command are configured to use it. A device that must contact its maker’s cloud to carry out a command may become unreachable. Home Assistant describes this limitation for integrations that depend on a brand’s cloud service, and identifies remote access and some platform integrations as internet-dependent (Home Assistant).

What may keep working, and what may stop

Function During an internet-only outage Why
At-home control of a locally connected device May work The device and controller can communicate over the functioning local network or radio. The precise app and setup matter.
Cloud-dependent device commands May fail The device cannot reach the vendor service needed to process the command.
Control while away from home Generally unavailable if it needs the internet Remote commands must reach the home through an internet-connected service. Google says Matter commands issued from away connect to the cloud and then the home hub.
Automations and schedules Depends on where they run Rules stored and executed locally may continue; rules that rely on a cloud service may not.
Voice control, alerts, and integrations Depends on the control path Do not assume a voice assistant, notification, or third-party connection works offline just because a device has local connectivity.

These are tendencies, not guarantees for every model. Home Assistant says its supported local-protocol setups—including Zigbee, Z-Wave, Matter, Thread, and ESPHome—can work without internet, but a protocol label alone does not establish how a particular product, app, or automation behaves (Home Assistant).

Matter helps with local control, but does not guarantee everything works offline

Matter commands within the home can travel locally over Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or Thread rather than through a cloud service. However, the local path still needs a compatible, operating controller and the relevant app or platform support. For Google Home, a Matter-enabled hub is required to set up and locally control Matter devices (Google Home and Nest Help). TP-Link likewise describes Matter operation as requiring a certified device, controller, and app, and says its Matter devices communicate over the local network (TP-Link).

Local control is not remote control. Google says commands issued from away are carried over the internet to the home hub (Google Home and Nest Help). Amazon also documents local connectivity options that can let Alexa control a device during an internet outage, but that applies to devices using a supported local connection path—not every Alexa-connected product (Amazon Alexa Smart Home).

Internet, router, hub, and power failures are different

Internet connection lost; router still on

Local Wi-Fi and compatible local automations may remain available. Cloud commands, remote access, and services that require an online connection may not.

Router or Wi-Fi fails

Wi-Fi devices may lose their local route to a phone or controller. A device using a separate hub-based radio could have another local path, but only if that hub and the controlling system remain operational; check the ecosystem rather than assuming it will work.

  • Wide Device Compatibility: Connect compatible smart devices from Aeotec and many other brands to build a unified system for lighting, voice control, energy management, and climate settings

Hub or controller fails

Devices that depend on the hub for local control, automations, or bridging between protocols may lose those functions even if the internet is still working.

Power fails

Routers, hubs, smart speakers, and mains-powered devices stop operating unless backed by power. A battery-powered device may remain on, but that does not ensure that its controller or communication path is available. Check the exact product documentation for backup power and manual operation; behavior is not universal.

Google’s developer documentation describes local connectivity in the home network context (Google Home Developers); the consequences of losing a hub or power depend on the particular system and its topology.

How to check your setup before an outage

  1. Identify the control path. For each important device, check its exact model documentation to see whether commands use the local network or a vendor cloud.
  2. List required controllers. Note any hub, border router, bridge, speaker, display, or local server, and confirm it is configured for local control.
  3. Check where automations run. Confirm whether schedules and rules execute on the device or local controller, or depend on an online service. A local protocol by itself does not answer this.
  4. Test an internet-only interruption. With the router powered, disconnect the internet connection and try the device app, voice command, and key automations from inside the home. This distinguishes cloud dependence from local-network operation.
  5. Consider other failures separately. Check what happens if Wi-Fi, the hub, or household power is lost. For safety-relevant equipment, verify backup power and physical controls in the product documentation.

Before buying a device or controller for outage resilience, check the exact model’s offline behavior and compatibility with your chosen platform. Features and compatibility can change; official documentation reviewed for this article was accessed October 4, 2026.
