To reduce dust from nearby infrastructure work, first limit how much outdoor air enters the affected side of your home: close exposed windows and doors during visibly dusty work, seal obvious gaps, and use a properly sized air cleaner for particles that remain indoors. For noise, household steps can soften exposure, but the effective controls—quieter equipment, scheduling and suitable barriers—are usually on the work site, so ask the project contact what is being done.
Reduce dust entering your home
Close exposed openings when dust is high
During visibly dusty work, close windows and doors on the side facing the activity. If practical, spend more time in a room farther from the work. This reduces direct entry but cannot make a home airtight.
Ventilate when outdoor air is cleaner. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) describes ventilation with clean outdoor air and reducing pollution sources as core indoor-air strategies, with filtration as a supplement: EPA guidance on home air cleaners and filters.
Seal obvious gaps and clean settled dust
Check window sashes, door edges and unused gaps. Removable weatherstripping may help reduce infiltration through clear gaps. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) gives gap-sealing advice for high-risk healthcare areas near construction; applying that principle to a typical home is a practical inference, not a CDC household directive: CDC construction and renovation guidance.

It can be used in any doorway of home, workshop, office, basement, closet, etc. It is a necessary dustproof tool for home renovations, construction site. IMPORTANT: PLEASE MEASURE the DOOR SIZE FIRST!
Wipe settled dust with a damp cloth, and clean floors in a way that does not throw dust back into the air. No particular cleaning schedule is established here as a requirement for homes near infrastructure work.
Use air filtration as a supplement
Choose a portable cleaner by room size and usable noise level
A portable HEPA air cleaner can capture airborne particles that remain indoors. Select a unit with a clean air delivery rate (CADR) appropriate for the room, keep its intake and outlet unobstructed, and consider whether its noise at the setting you can tolerate is acceptable. EPA says higher fan speeds and longer run times generally filter more air, but no cleaner removes every pollutant: EPA’s guide to air cleaners in the home.

EPA uses around 50 dB—the approximate operating noise of a modern refrigerator—as a reference point for air-cleaner noise ratings. This is a product-noise comparison, not a health threshold. CADR rates particle removal, not gas removal; activated carbon may be useful for some gases, but gas-filter performance does not have a widely used rating system. ENERGY STAR indicates energy efficiency, not cleaning effectiveness. Compare CADR, room suitability, replacement-filter fit and availability, and noise at the setting you would actually use.
Check central HVAC filter compatibility
If your home has central heating or cooling, check the system manufacturer’s filter requirements before changing filter type or rating. A central filter cleans air only while the system is running, according to EPA’s air-cleaner guide.

Be cautious with fans during outdoor work
EPA’s advice about isolating dusty work with taped plastic and using exhaust ventilation is for indoor remodeling: EPA guidance on protecting indoor air during remodeling. Outdoor infrastructure work changes the airflow problem. A fan blowing out of a window during a dusty episode can draw dusty outdoor air in through other openings, so do not assume indoor-remodeling exhaust advice applies. Consider outdoor conditions and airflow before using a window fan.
Reduce noise exposure at home and ask for site controls
What you can do indoors
Close windows facing the work during the loudest periods and use a quieter room farther from the source when possible. These steps may reduce the noise you experience; they do not soundproof the home.

What to ask the project contact
Ask the project’s resident liaison or complaints contact whether noisy tasks can be scheduled or limited, equipment is maintained and muffled, simultaneous noisy operations can be reduced, and barriers are being placed close to active sources as work moves. Singapore’s National Environment Agency (NEA) recommends quieter equipment where practicable, maintenance, scheduling and resident communication in its construction-noise guidance: NEA construction noise control. UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE) guidance similarly prioritizes eliminating or substituting noisy processes, quieter equipment, barriers and distance in workplace settings: HSE guidance on reducing noise.
Thin netting and tarpaulins are not effective acoustic barriers. NEA explains that such materials lack the mass or sound-absorbing properties needed; barriers need appropriate material, broad coverage, close placement and sealed joints. They may serve as dust or debris screens, but should not be mistaken for sound control. Effective highway noise barriers typically reduce noise levels by 5 to 10 dB, according to the Federal Highway Administration; that figure describes engineered roadway barriers, not household curtains or a promised indoor reduction: FHWA information on highway noise barriers.

Record problems and escalate locally
Keep a dated log of when dust or noise reaches your home. Note the affected room, whether windows were open, visible conditions, disruption and any symptoms. Share the record with the project’s public liaison or complaints contact, and ask what dust controls, barrier coverage, work scheduling and monitoring are in place.
If symptoms worsen, or someone in the household has asthma, another breathing problem or other medical vulnerability, reduce exposure and seek advice from a qualified health professional. HSE notes that construction dust, even over a short period, may trigger a reaction in someone who already has asthma or another breathing problem: HSE construction dust guidance. The information available here does not establish a safe exposure threshold for a particular home or project.
Complaint routes and permitted work hours depend on location. In England, councils handle construction-noise complaints and may serve notices in some circumstances: UK government guidance on council noise complaints. Elsewhere, check the relevant local authority and the project’s resident channel.
