These are annualized rates—not the amount spent during August alone.
What the August estimate shows
The U.S. Census Bureau’s October 1, 2026 release put August private residential construction at $882.3 billion at a seasonally adjusted annual rate. The comparison is with revised July, when the estimate was $872.7 billion at the same annualized rate.
The 1.1% increase applies specifically to private residential construction from July to August. It does not mean that every part of the construction industry increased, or that August’s actual cash outlay was $882.3 billion.
How to read the annualized figure
The Census Bureau’s Value of Construction Put in Place measure estimates the value of construction work performed in the United States, including work on new structures and improvements to existing structures. It covers private and public construction and reports figures by construction type both as seasonally adjusted annual rates and as unadjusted dollars.

An annual rate expresses the seasonally adjusted pace as though it continued for a full year. It is useful for comparing monthly estimates on a consistent basis, but it is not a tally of money spent in that individual month. The August release’s amounts are estimates and may be revised.
How residential spending compares with other construction
The August release reported increases across the private residential, private nonresidential, and total private construction lines, but at different rates. The wider year-over-year context is for all construction, not residential alone.

The Census Bureau also reported that total construction spending during the first eight months of 2026 was 3.1% below the same period in 2025. Both that year-to-date comparison and the 1.7% year-over-year decline refer to total construction spending; they are not reported here as residential-only comparisons. Thus, the residential monthly rise and the broader total’s decline from a year earlier describe different measures and periods.
What the increase does—and does not—establish
The August estimate indicates a higher seasonally adjusted annualized value for private residential construction than the revised July estimate. By itself, one monthly comparison does not establish a sustained trend or show that construction activity is accelerating across the industry. The release reports statistical uncertainty alongside its estimates; without interpreting that uncertainty, the 1.1% change should not be characterized as definitively statistically significant.

These figures are national U.S. estimates. They do not provide a state- or metropolitan-area breakdown in the values cited here, and they do not identify the causes of the month-to-month change.

The Census Bureau issued the August 2026 construction-spending release on October 1, 2026. Its schedule listed November 2, 2026, for the September 2026 report.
