Monte Alvo House is a 430 m², single-story residence in Pavia, Portugal, designed by NOZ Arquitectura. Its plan brings three independently entered family units together under one roof, while a pitched tiled roof, thick masonry, shading and ventilation strategies reinterpret building traditions associated with the Alentejo.

What is Monte Alvo House?

Monte Alvo House is a residential project completed in 2024 in Pavia, in Portugal’s Alentejo region. ArchDaily’s project profile, published on 3 October 2026, lists its area as 430 m² and credits NOZ Arquitectura. The lead architects are Inês Sousa, Rui Dias and José Malhó. The project was photographed by Fernando Guerra | FG+SG.

The design takes cues from the region’s simple forms, functional spaces and relationship to climate and landscape. Rather than reproduce a historic house, it brings familiar elements—whitewashed walls, a pitched roof of ceramic tiles, thick masonry and oversized chimneys—into a contemporary family home.

How does the house accommodate an extended family?

The former building reportedly contained five separate dwellings, each with its own entrance, within one volume. The new house reorganizes that arrangement into three independent units. Each has a private entrance, allowing several generations of one family to use the house while retaining distinct living areas.

A longitudinal axis links the side facades and internal wings, giving the separate parts a shared spatial order. Arches mark entrances along this sequence; in the kitchen, an arch continues overhead as a curved ceiling. Two large openings connect the interior more directly to the landscape and support outdoor living.

What makes the design responsive to the Alentejo climate?

The architects describe orientation, shading, ventilation and material choices as responses to the region’s hot, dry climate. These are design intentions in the project description, not reported performance results.

  • South-facing shade: A straw pergola shades the south-facing facade. The architects say it reduces direct solar exposure.
  • Cross-ventilation: Openings are arranged to encourage air movement through the house; the project description presents this as a way to reduce energy consumption.
  • Chimneys and daylight: Oversized chimneys are described as supporting natural ventilation and passive cooling as well as bringing in diffuse light from above.
  • Thermal mass: Thick masonry, local lime and stone are linked in the description to thermal inertia and a reduced environmental footprint.

The project profile does not provide measured energy use, indoor temperatures, post-occupancy findings, material quantities or technical specifications. It therefore does not establish how much energy the strategies save or how the house performs in actual use.

What materials and construction details are specified?

The project description identifies broad material categories: ceramic roof tiles, whitewashed walls, thick masonry, local lime and stone, alongside the straw pergola. Its regional references are expressed through the roof form, wall treatment, mass and chimneys as well as through the plan’s arches and sequence of spaces.

The profile does not name manufacturers, product models, suppliers or detailed specifications. The material descriptions are not enough to identify a particular tile, lime finish or stone product as one used in the house.
