How to Clean Lawn Mower Battery Terminals With Baking Soda

Use baking soda on mower battery terminals only when the model’s manual supports the method. The cable order and solution ratio vary by manufacturer.

For a mower with a lead-acid battery, clean corroded external terminals with baking soda only as directed by its owner’s manual. Disconnect the negative cable first, use the manual’s specific solution ratio, keep liquid out of the battery cells, then rinse and dry the parts as directed. The cited manuals give different ratios, so there is no single recipe that fits every mower. These instructions do not establish that the method is suitable for lithium batteries.

Check the battery and mower manual first

Park the mower safely, switch it off, remove the key, and consult the owner’s manual for battery access and isolation instructions. Confirm the battery chemistry and identify the correct terminals before starting. The baking-soda procedures cited here are for lead-acid batteries; if your mower has a lithium battery, follow its manufacturer’s battery and service instructions instead.

Do not improvise if the battery is damaged or leaking, the wiring is unusual, or you cannot safely reach the terminals. For routine external cleaning, do not open battery caps or covers unless the exact manual directs a separate service operation. Husqvarna warns not to open or remove caps or covers in its cleaning guidance: Husqvarna battery and terminal cleaning guidance.

Protect yourself and prevent sparks

  • Wear eye protection and protective gloves; Toro also specifies protective clothing and insulated tools.
  • Keep smoking materials, sparks, and open flames away from the battery. Lead-acid batteries can generate explosive gas; charge them only in a well-ventilated area.
  • Keep tools and loose cables from touching the opposite battery post or metal mower parts.

See the safety instructions in the Toro battery servicing manual and Husqvarna battery cleaning guidance.

Clean the terminals step by step

  1. Disconnect the cables in the correct order. For the cited Toro instructions, disconnect the negative (black, –) cable first, then the positive (red, +) cable. Reconnect positive first and negative last. Follow your mower’s own manual if its instructions differ. Toro states: “Disconnect the negative terminal first and the positive last. Connect the positive terminal first and the negative last.” Toro battery servicing manual.
  2. Mix the solution specified for your mower. Ratios differ across the cited manuals: Toro specifies four parts water to one part baking soda, while John Deere specifies one part baking soda to four parts water. Use the ratio in the manual for your exact mower model; do not treat either as a universal recipe.
  3. Clean external contact surfaces only. Apply the solution to the outside of the battery posts, clamps, and cable ends as directed. John Deere calls out the battery, terminals, cable ends, battery box, and other parts; Honda specifies a wire brush or sandpaper for terminals and cable terminals. Keep both cleaning solution and rinse water out of the battery cells. See the John Deere battery cleaning instructions and Honda battery cleaning instructions.
  4. Rinse and dry as directed. John Deere instructs users to rinse the cleaned parts with clean water and let them dry; Honda says to dry the battery thoroughly. Do not reinstall parts while they are wet.
  5. Reinstall and reconnect. Secure the battery and reconnect the cables in the order specified by the mower manual. In the cited Toro instructions, positive goes on first and negative last.
  6. Apply protection only if approved. The cited manuals differ on aftercare: Toro recommends a light coating of grease, John Deere names petroleum jelly or silicone spray, and Honda recommends grease. Use only a product permitted by your mower’s manual.

Why the baking-soda ratio matters

Manufacturer instructions are not consistent: Toro specifies 4 parts water to 1 part baking soda, while John Deere specifies 1 part baking soda to 4 parts water. These are materially different mixtures, not alternate ways of stating the same ratio. The correct choice depends on the exact mower manual, not a general-purpose recipe.
