Residents interviewed by The Harvard Crimson described unfinished work, delayed amenities, heating interruptions and elevator problems during Verra Apartments’ first months of occupancy. The accounts concern the building’s early period after it opened in July 2025; they are resident reports, not independent inspection findings, and the article says some construction and amenity issues had eased by spring 2026.
What residents reported during Verra’s first months
Verra Apartments is part of Harvard’s Enterprise Research Campus (ERC) in Allston. The Crimson’s October 2, 2026 report describes a 343-unit property comprising an eight-story mid-rise and a 17-story high-rise. Nine current and former residents recounted problems as people began moving in during 2025.
Construction continued after move-in
Former resident Oleksandr “Alexander” Kutovyi said exposed pipes and open walls remained on most floors for at least four months after he moved in. Four residents told the Crimson that construction often began as early as 5:30 or 6 a.m. The report says Boston’s regular weekday construction hours begin at 7 a.m., while also noting the city may issue permits for after-hours work; it does not establish whether any particular work at Verra violated city rules.
Current resident Jesse S. Ellis said he had been told before signing that the building was still under construction and some amenities were being finalized. Verra said residents signed a lease addendum acknowledging ongoing construction and unfinished amenities. Kutovyi, by contrast, said the building was not ready for move-ins, telling the Crimson: “In my opinion, they clearly did not manage to deliver in time, and still were heavily pushing to start letting people in.”

Heating, hot water and elevators
Residents reported winter heat outages, after which Verra supplied space heaters to affected units. Others said hot water could take about ten minutes to start running. These are accounts published by the Crimson, not measurements of building-wide utility performance.
Multiple residents described frequent elevator malfunctions. Some said people had been stuck for two hours without a working help button or phone service. Verra told the Crimson that its elevators were “certified and have passed all required testing under Massachusetts regulations.” The article did not publish inspection records, so the residents’ accounts and the company’s statement should be understood as separate claims.

A reported pest problem
A former resident said she found small insects in her windows and bathroom vent after moving in during August 2025. She said pest control could not find the source and management blamed her for attracting them; after two months of negotiation, she moved to another unit. According to the Crimson, neither Verra nor Greystar commented on the reported infestation.
When the amenities became available
The Crimson reported that some advertised amenities were not ready when residents first moved in. The garage became operational in February 2026, and Verra said its second-floor outdoor terrace opened on May 15, 2026—nine months after the first residents moved in.

Residents told the Crimson that construction and incomplete-amenity issues had become less prominent by spring 2026. That account describes improvement over the period covered by the article; it does not establish the building’s condition today.
What Verra, Greystar and Harvard affiliates said
Verra said newly opened buildings can face early challenges and that it sought to minimize inconvenience. Its statement, as quoted by the Crimson, said: “While we regret and do our best to minimize any inconvenience faced by our customers, it is anticipated that newly constructed buildings will experience some initial challenges, especially those that open prior to full completion,” The company also cited the lease addendum about construction and unfinished amenities and said the elevators had passed required testing.

Separately, 36 Harvard affiliates sent a demand letter to ERC developer Tishman Speyer raising concerns that included elevator safety, fire-code issues and alleged negligence by Greystar. The Crimson reported that Greystar’s legal representatives replied on October 22, 2025, denying the accusations and citing an “in-depth investigation and analysis.” The article does not provide technical records that independently resolve those competing claims.

The Crimson reported average pricing of $3,479 to $3,753 for Verra’s cheapest units and compared it with a $2,025 Allston average, describing Verra’s figure as almost double. The article passage does not specify the period or calculation method for either figure, or identify the underlying market dataset for the Allston comparison. Treat these as figures reported by the newspaper, not as a current, independently verified market survey.

The story also reported roughly 86 income-restricted units, connecting them to Harvard’s commitment to affordable housing in Allston through its Institutional Master Plan. Verra said the property was 97 percent leased and that its renewal rate significantly exceeded industry standards. Those are company claims quoted by the Crimson; the article provides neither independent occupancy data nor a benchmark for the renewal-rate comparison.
How to read the resident accounts
The report is useful for understanding what specific residents said they experienced during Verra’s early occupancy and how the company responded. It does not amount to a building inspection, establish every allegation, or document present-day conditions. Kutovyi’s assessment was mixed: despite criticizing the price and move-in readiness, he told the Crimson that he would still choose Verra because of its quality and proximity to Harvard’s campus.
