There is no single best material for every roof flashing job. Aluminum and galvanized steel are common sheet-metal choices, copper is a durable premium option, and EPDM rubber is mainly used for flexible details such as pipe boots and vent collars. The right choice depends on the flashing location, roof covering, nearby materials, exposure, and the roof-system manufacturer’s requirements.

What roof flashing does—and why the location matters

Roof flashing protects joints and penetrations by directing water away from vulnerable areas. Formed metal is used at many roof edges, transitions, and joints; flexible EPDM flashing is especially associated with pipes and other roof penetrations. Choose material for the specific detail rather than treating all flashing as interchangeable.

How the four materials compare

Material Typical role Practical considerations
Aluminum Lightweight sheet-metal flashing; listed among common metal flashing materials by GAF. Confirm that the finish, gauge, profile, and detailing suit the roof system and exposure. Compatibility with adjoining materials still matters.
Galvanized steel A common choice for general sheet-metal flashing, according to GAF. Specify the actual product: “steel” alone does not say whether it is galvanized or otherwise coated. Coating and system details matter.
Copper Durable sheet-metal flashing; HUD identifies it as one of the most durable roof-flashing materials. Its durability does not make it compatible with every roof assembly or adjoining metal. Check the full material combination.
EPDM rubber Flexible flashing used chiefly for pipe boots, vent collars, and similar penetrations. It serves a different purpose from formed metal flashing at roof joints. Match the boot or collar to the penetration and roof detail.

How to choose a flashing material

Start with the roof detail

Identify where the flashing will go: a penetration, a transition, or another joint. A pipe boot needs a flexible penetration detail; a formed joint may call for sheet metal. Follow the roof-covering manufacturer’s details and use a product suited to that application.

Check compatibility before comparing price

Flashing contacts or drains water across the roof covering and may be near other metals. Those combinations can affect corrosion and durability, so verify compatibility among the flashing, cladding, and adjacent materials. The New Zealand Metal Roofing Manufacturers’ Code of Practice for Metal Roof and Wall Cladding, version 3.0 (March 1, 2026), says exposed flashing is typically made from the same base metal as the roof and wall cladding and states: “All metals must be checked for compatibility with the roof material.” This is guidance from the New Zealand metal-roofing context, not a substitute for the governing requirements or manufacturer instructions where the building is located.

Compare service needs, appearance, and cost

Consider corrosion exposure, expected replacement interval, appearance, initial material cost, and how readily the detail can be formed or fitted. A material’s published lifespan is not a guarantee: product quality, exposure, installation, maintenance, and detailing all affect actual service.
