For an oven door, avoid abrasive cleaners and scrubbers, sharp metal scrapers, flammable products such as lighter fluid or WD-40, and any cleaner your oven’s manual prohibits. The exact “never-use” list depends on the model and whether you are cleaning interior glass, exterior glass, painted trim, the gasket, or the oven liner. Check the owner’s manual before using a product; a cleaner permitted on one surface may damage another.
What should you never use on an oven glass door?
These cautions are supported by manufacturer guidance, but they are not universal bans for every oven or every surface. Follow the instructions for your exact model and the part you are cleaning.

Abrasive cleaners

Abrasive sponges

Scouring pads
Bosch says not to use scouring pads on oven glass. GE also names plastic scouring pads among the products to avoid on exterior surfaces; that warning is about the exterior, not a blanket rule for every interior-glass method. Bosch’s oven-glass guidance; GE’s exterior-cleaning guidance.

Steel wool

Cleaning powders
GE lists cleaning powders among the products to avoid on exterior surfaces. Check the manual before using any powdered cleaner elsewhere on the door. GE’s exterior-cleaning guidance.

Oven cleaner on exterior glass
GE advises against oven cleaners on exterior surfaces. Separately, GE says not to use commercial oven cleaners to hand-clean a self-clean oven liner because repeated chemical cleaning can etch or discolor it. Sharp metal scrapers
Bosch’s manual warns: “Do not use harsh abrasive cleaners or sharp metal scrapers to clean the oven door glass since they can scratch the surface, which may result in shattering of the glass.” Instructions that permit a scraper on a cooktop do not make one safe for oven-door glass. Flammable solvents, including lighter fluid
Bosch warns against flammable cleaners such as lighter fluid on oven glass. Do not use a solvent unless the manual explicitly approves it for the specific surface. Bosch’s oven-glass guidance.

WD-40
Bosch specifically includes WD-40 among the flammable cleaners not to use on oven doors. It is not an oven-glass cleaner. Bosch’s oven-glass guidance.

Chlorine-based cleaners or bleach

Ammonia-based glass cleaner on black glass or metallic paint
Ammonia is a finish-specific concern, not a proven hazard for all oven glass. GE warns it can discolor black glass, and Whirlpool warns it can stain metallic-painted surfaces. Choose a cleaning method by surface
Before cleaning, identify which part you are working on: interior door glass, exterior glass, painted trim, gasket, or liner. The manual for your model controls; GE directs owners to consult it for specific exterior-cleaning instructions. GE’s exterior-cleaning guidance.

What to do if grime is between the panes
Do not remove or disassemble the door based on generic cleaning directions. GE says some camera-equipped and side-swing models should not be cleaned between panes using its general procedure, and recommends service where those instructions do not apply. Whirlpool notes that between-glass cleaning often involves disassembly and is generally not recommended. Consult the model manual or contact the manufacturer’s service team.
