The U.S. Fire Administration, NFPA and U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission all give this advice. Use sound, properly listed lights, but do not treat LED bulbs or any other light type as an exception for overnight use.
Why should you turn tree lights off overnight?
Lights and their wiring can fail. The CPSC warns that lights could short out and start a fire; switching them off when nobody is awake or home reduces the time they are operating unattended. Official guidance does not establish that LED lights, compared with incandescent lights, are safe to leave on overnight.
The U.S. Fire Administration says to unplug Christmas tree lights before bed or leaving home. NFPA likewise advises turning them off, while the CPSC says to turn off all lights when going to bed or leaving the house.
How to reduce Christmas tree light and fire risks
- Check the lights before use. Do not use strands with frayed or pinched wires, cracked or broken sockets, or loose connections. Discard damaged sets.
- Choose appropriately tested lights. Use lights listed or tested by a recognized or qualified testing laboratory, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Respect connection limits. Follow the manufacturer’s maximum number of strands that may be connected. Do not assume that similar-looking sets can be connected in the same way.
- Switch lights off when unattended. A timer can help switch them off at bedtime, but it does not make damaged or unsuitable lights safe.
Extra precautions for a live Christmas tree
- Water the tree daily.
- Keep it at least three feet from heat sources, including fireplaces, radiators, candles, space heaters, heat vents and lights.
- Keep the tree clear of exits.
- Remove it after the holiday or once it becomes dry.
NFPA’s 2025 safety sheet says a heat source too close to the tree causes one in every four Christmas tree fires. That figure refers to tree fires, not all home fires. Its sheet also gives an electrical-problem fraction that differs from the fraction attributed to NFPA on the USFA page; the underlying study details are not provided in the cited text, so neither percentage should be treated here as a definitive current estimate.

Does the advice change for LED lights?
No exception for LED or incandescent lights appears in the official guidance cited above. The practical checks are the same: use lights suited to their intended setting, make sure they are undamaged, follow their connection limits and turn them off before bed or leaving home. The cited materials do not compare overnight fire risk by bulb type or assess specific light models.

The CPSC release dated November 30, 2001, reported an estimate of about 400 Christmas tree fires annually, with 20 deaths and 70 injuries. Those are historical figures, not a current annual estimate. For overnight decisions, follow the agencies’ direct safety advice rather than using that dated count to infer present-day risk.
