To cut a straight line with a cordless circular saw, support the workpiece and offcut, mark the cut, then guide the saw along a compatible track or a clamped straightedge. With a straightedge, measure the saw’s shoe-to-blade offset and position the guide on the correct side of the cut. Keep the shoe flat against the guide as you advance, and check the setup with a scrap cut when accuracy matters.

Set up the workpiece before the saw

Place the material on stable supports and secure it so it cannot shift. Plan where the offcut will go: both the retained piece and the offcut need support, while the kerf must remain open rather than closing around and pinching the blade. A stable setup also leaves both hands available to control the saw. Follow the operating and safety instructions for your specific saw. Kreg’s beginner guide describes supporting material and managing the offcut as part of making a controlled cut.

Choose a guide that suits the cut

A physical guide gives the saw a path to follow, which is especially helpful for long cuts in sheet goods. The right option depends on your saw, the material’s dimensions and whether you make guided cuts occasionally or often. Kreg’s guide comparison, last updated February 11, 2026, distinguishes edge guides from track guides and notes that freehand cuts can be difficult.

Guide option Useful when Check before use
Clamped straightedge You need an occasional straight cut and have a sufficiently straight edge, including for a long cut. Measure the shoe-to-blade offset; check the straightedge, clamp clearance and workpiece support. Verify the setup with a scrap cut. Kreg and Kreg’s guide instructions explain the offset method.
Track guide You make long or repeated cuts in sheet goods and want the saw to follow a rail. Confirm saw compatibility, rail length, joining options, bevel clearance and whether the track must be clamped. Kreg’s Accu-Cut is a specific 50-inch cutting-length track with grip strips described by the manufacturer as a no-clamp design; do not assume other tracks share those features.
Dedicated track saw You make guided panel cuts frequently or want a saw with an integrated track interface. Check compatible track, cut capacity, dust collection and the conditions attached to any accuracy claim. DEWALT’s DCS525 product page states repeatability “within 1/32 of an inch” for 90-degree cuts using a separately sold DWS5130 Dual Sided Track. This is a manufacturer claim for that setup, not an independent test or a general guarantee for cordless circular saws.

Before buying or using any guide, check its instructions against your saw’s blade size and baseplate geometry. Compatibility is model-specific. For example, Kreg’s FAQ gives blade-diameter and baseplate-to-blade offset limits for its Straight Edge Guide.

The rails can be quickly connected and adjusted to support straight cuts, cross cuts, panel trimming and layout work.
  • Dual Inch & Metric Scale Markings: Designed with clear imperial and metric graduations for fast measuring and accurate positioning. The easy-to-read scale markings help you align cut lines, set repeatable measurements and improve precision when working with wood panels and sheet goods.
  • Wide Use for Woodworking Projects: Works as a saw guide rail, circular saw cutting guide, track saw guide and router guide for DIY woodworking, cabinet making, shelving, panel cutting, baseboard trimming and custom storage projects. Compact design with storage bag makes it easy to carry, organize and store.

Measure and position a straightedge

The saw blade usually sits inboard of the shoe edge, so placing a straightedge directly on the marked cut line will not necessarily put the blade on that line. Measure from the shoe edge that will ride against the guide to the blade’s cutting tooth. Position the straightedge by that offset, on the correct side of the cut, so the blade follows the mark. The exact offset depends on the saw and blade; consult the saw manual and test the alignment on scrap if precision matters. Kreg’s comparison describes measuring this offset for its guide approach.

Align a track guide

If the track is designed to align directly with the cut line, position it on the mark and secure it as its manufacturer specifies. Kreg describes its Accu-Cut as aligning with the cut line and using grip strips to hold the track without clamps. That is a product-specific design, not a rule for all tracks. Check the instructions for your rail and saw before starting. Kreg Accu-Cut details

  • Multiple Length Settings: Cuts 50” out of the box, or extends to any length required with optional GuideRail extensions to rip entire sheets
  • Sturdy Woodworking Tools: All-metal construction Increases rigidity and reduces the flex for a more accurate cut
  • Versatile Carpentry Tools: The low profile lets you cut over 1-3/4" deep - enough to cut through common interior door thickness
  • Straight-Edge Guide: The red cutting-strip acts as a guide and helps reduce splintering and chipping

Make the cut with steady shoe contact

  1. Mark and check the line. Make the intended cut clear, then confirm the guide’s position and that the workpiece and offcut are supported.
  2. Check the saw setup. Set blade depth and bevel as needed. Confirm the guide is stable, the blade is suitable and properly installed, and the shoe can travel without hitting clamps or other obstructions.
  3. Start and advance under control. Keep the shoe flat against the guide and move at a controlled pace. Do not force the saw; follow its operating instructions throughout the cut. Kreg’s guide instructions describe maintaining contact with the guide.
  4. Protect the cut edge where needed. For plywood or other sheet goods where veneer tear-out matters, use an appropriate sharp blade. If your guide has an anti-chip feature, follow its instructions; Kreg describes one on the Accu-Cut, but other guides may not include it. Kreg Accu-Cut details

Match the blade to the material

A guide helps control the saw’s path, but it cannot compensate for a damaged, unsuitable or poorly installed blade. Choose a blade suited to the material and the finish you need. There is no single tooth count established here as right for every cut; use the blade and saw manufacturers’ guidance for your material and setup. Kreg’s comparison also emphasizes blade quality.

Kreg Rip-Cut Circular Saw Guide, Cuts up to 48" Wide, KMA2685.
  • Saw Guide Compatibility: This saw guide turns your circular saw into a precision edge-guided tool; works best with a regular (side-blade) circular saw, corded or cordless, that has a blade guard or base that allows the sled to clamp securely
  • Woodworking Tools: Universal sled holds guide rail and edge guide, making the circular saw guide portable; not ideal for saws with plastic upper blade guard because guard might interfere with the sled clamping or alignment
  • Versatile Carpenter Tools: Works for left- or right-bladed saws and users; please note, this guide does not work with worm drive saws, as the base or motor housing tends to interfere with the sled’s ability to sit flat and clamp properly
  • Accessible Workshop Accessories: Large handle on the edge guide maintains contact with the material;, this saw guide is not ideal for saws with bulky or odd shape guards that prevent a flat fit with the sled plate
  • Premium Kreg Tools: We offer products that help woodworkers close the gap between idea and outcome

Check the result before repeating the setup

  • If the cut misses the line, recheck the straightedge offset or track alignment before changing how you guide the saw.
  • If the shoe loses contact with the guide, stop and correct the setup; a guide only helps while the saw follows it.
  • If the workpiece shifts or the kerf closes, stop and reset the supports so the material cannot move or pinch the blade.
  • If the cut edge tears out, check blade suitability and condition, and use an anti-chip feature only if your guide has one.
