A recent white or cloudy water ring on finished wood may respond to a gentle household method: cover it with a clean, dry cloth and briefly apply low, dry heat with an iron, checking often. A dark or black mark is different—it may mean water has discolored the wood beneath the finish, so stop before trying to rub or sand it away.
First, identify the kind of mark
Color offers a useful first clue, though it cannot identify every finish or guarantee what will work. White or cloudy patches commonly indicate moisture trapped in the finish. Dark or black discoloration can indicate that water reached and discolored the wood itself. The Canadian Conservation Institute notes that water spills can cause cloudy white patches on wood finish (Government of Canada furniture care guidance).
- White or cloudy and recent: A cautious household treatment may be worth trying on a finished surface.
- Dark, black, or persistent: Treat it as possible deeper damage, not as an ordinary surface ring.
- Antique, valuable, delicate, or unfinished furniture: Avoid improvised heat, rubbing, or wet cleaning; the finish and construction may need specialist care.
For a recent white ring, try a dry iron carefully
This Old House and Bob Vila describe using low, dry heat for white or light surface rings. The method is not guaranteed, and results may depend on the finish. Tom Silva of Ask This Old House has said the method is more likely to work on oil-based or lacquer finishes than on water-based finishes (This Old House, updated June 3, 2026).
- Wipe away any surface moisture.
- Empty the iron’s water reservoir and turn steam off. Set it to its lowest heat.
- Place a clean, plain, dry cotton cloth over the ring.
- Apply the iron for only a few seconds, then lift the cloth and inspect the finish.
- Repeat only if the surface looks unchanged. Stop immediately if the finish becomes dull, sticky, discolored, or otherwise altered.
Do not use steam, leave the iron in one spot, or assume that longer heating is safer or more effective. If you are uncertain about the finish or the piece is valuable, skip the experiment and ask a furniture conservator or qualified refinisher.

Other household methods are less predictable
Hair dryer
Bob Vila describes using a hair dryer on a low setting, held several inches from the surface and kept moving. Check frequently and stop if the finish changes; overheating can damage it. Timing varies between guides, so do not follow a fixed duration as though it were safe for every piece (Bob Vila’s water-stain guidance).
Mayonnaise or petroleum jelly
This Old House describes leaving mayonnaise on a white ring overnight and wiping it away. WoodCentral also reports mayonnaise or petroleum jelly as overnight home remedies, but these are not guaranteed treatments. Keep any trial limited to a finished surface, and stop if the finish changes (This Old House; WoodCentral, May 30, 2026).

Toothpaste or baking-soda mixtures
Some how-to guides mention rubbing treatments such as toothpaste or baking soda. Because rubbing can abrade or dull a finish, test any such method first in an inconspicuous place, use very light pressure, and stop at the first sign of a surface change. Bob Vila specifically advises testing its vinegar-and-baking-soda method in a hidden area and applying light pressure. Avoid these experiments on delicate, antique, or valuable finishes.
Dark marks need a different repair
A dark or black mark may mean moisture penetrated the finish and discolored the wood. This Old House says dark or black rings are likely to need refinishing; Fine Woodworking describes a more involved repair for black or gray damage that can include stripping, sanding, and oxalic-acid bleaching (This Old House; Fine Woodworking, “Water and Heat Marks”).

Those are repair operations, not pantry-cleaning steps. Sanding just the visible spot can leave an uneven appearance, and thin veneer can be damaged by sanding. The right approach depends on the wood, finish, veneer, and extent of damage; there is no single safe DIY procedure for every piece. For extensive damage or a valuable item, consult a qualified refinisher. For antiques or furniture with historical value, the Canadian Conservation Institute advises against stripping as a general approach and recommends referring extensive repair or cleaning to a conservator (Government of Canada guidance).

- Use coasters and keep potted plants off wood furniture to reduce the risk of water damage, as the Canadian Conservation Institute recommends.
- Wipe up spills promptly rather than letting water sit on the surface.
- Do not wet-clean unfinished wood.
- Use furniture polish cautiously: some products can leave residue that builds up or affects finishes. Wood does not need to be “fed.”
For modern finished furniture, a clean cloth and an ordinary iron are household tools—not a guaranteed cure. Choose whether to try gentle dry heat based on the mark and the finish you can safely treat; leave deeper damage and sensitive pieces to a professional.
