Teak is the timber of Tectona grandis, a tropical hardwood valued for its appearance, durability, and workability. It is used in furniture, shipbuilding, and decorative building components, but the name alone does not guarantee a particular grade, performance, finish, or sourcing history. For outdoor furniture, untreated teak can weather to silver-gray; oil is an optional way to retain a warmer brown appearance, not an automatic durability requirement.
What teak is and where it grows
Tectona grandis is native to India, Myanmar, Lao PDR, and Thailand. It has also been introduced and established in other tropical regions, so teak grown in plantations may come from outside its natural range. Teak is a high-value tropical hardwood with established uses in furniture, shipbuilding, and decorative building components. Those uses reflect its useful material qualities, but they do not mean every teak product is suitable for every exposure or structural application. Design, wood selection, joinery, hardware, and product specifications still matter.
Why teak is valued—and why it varies
Teak is known for its color, grain, durability, and workability. It is not a single uniform grade: origin, growth conditions, and plantation rotation can influence color, density, natural durability, and mechanical properties. The International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO) notes that short-rotation plantation wood may differ from longer-rotation material in these characteristics. That is a reason to ask about the timber in a specific product, not to assume all plantation teak is either equivalent to or worse than all other teak. Carl Hansen & Søn gives an approximate average teak wood weight of 630 kg/m³ on its materials page. This is a company-published reference without a publication year shown, not a universal specification for every teak board or finished product. The company also describes teak as elastic and oil-rich; that is its material description, not an independently reported test result. Read its teak materials information in that context.
How outdoor teak changes over time
Untreated outdoor teak can gradually develop a silver-gray surface as it weathers. That change is primarily an appearance choice: leaving the wood untreated does not automatically mean it has lost the durability associated with teak. Carl Hansen & Søn states that teak’s natural oil content allows it to be left untreated without compromising durability and strength; this is manufacturer guidance, not a guarantee for every product or exposure.

Oil is an option for people who prefer a warmer reddish-brown appearance. It should not be treated as necessary simply because furniture is outdoors. Finishes and construction differ, so follow the furniture maker’s care instructions before applying oil or another treatment.
If you want to oil the furniture
Carl Hansen & Søn advises cleaning oil-treated furniture before re-oiling, letting the wood dry, and avoiding application in direct sunlight. Its guidance mentions warm water, a small amount of gentle cleaning agent, soft brushing, and fine sandpaper for oil-treated furniture. What to check when buying teak furniture or components
Use the product’s intended setting and construction—not just the word “teak”—to judge whether it suits your project or outdoor space. Ask the seller or manufacturer for details you can verify, particularly where exposure, structural use, or sourcing matters.
- Use and exposure: Confirm whether the piece is designed for indoor or outdoor use and what weather exposure its maker supports.
- Finish: Find out whether the wood is untreated, oiled, or finished another way, and what appearance and maintenance the maker expects.
- Construction: Check joinery, hardware, and product specifications for the intended use; the species name alone does not establish performance.
- Species and source: Ask whether the product is stated to be Tectona grandis, where the wood was grown, and whether it is plantation-grown.
- Documentation: If a seller makes a certification or sourcing claim, ask for documentation tied to the actual product and current chain of custody. A claim by one company applies to its products, not teak furniture generally.
- Care and warranty: Review the maker’s instructions and warranty before choosing a finish or maintenance routine.
For example, Carl Hansen & Søn says it uses FSC-certified teak. That is the company’s sourcing claim; verify certification for the specific product and its current chain-of-custody documentation rather than assuming the claim covers other products or sellers. The company’s sustainability information describes its stated approach.
FAO’s account of plantation interest alongside declining natural-forest supplies describes historical forestry context, not current market statistics. Neither that context nor a species label establishes the legality or sustainability of a particular item in a particular jurisdiction. Ask for product-specific evidence when those questions affect your purchase.
