For washable linen, use a gentle cycle with cool water, mild detergent and little friction; remove it promptly and air-dry when practical. If the care label allows a dryer, use low heat briefly and take the item out while it is still slightly damp. Always check the item’s label first: blends, linings, embellishments and tailoring can change the safest method.
Check the care label and construction first
Linen is not one uniform fabric-care case. A garment’s blend, dye, lining, buttons, embroidery, seams and finish can affect how it responds to water and agitation. Follow its care label rather than applying a single temperature or method to every linen item. Some structured or lined pieces may need professional cleaning.
Before washing, separate colors and keep linen away from abrasive items such as jeans. For a delicate garment that is marked machine-washable, a mesh laundry bag can help reduce pulling and friction. Pretreat visible stains before laundering, and test any treatment on an inconspicuous area first.
Can you machine wash linen?
Many modern linen pieces can be machine-washed when their labels permit it. Choose a gentle or delicate cycle and cool water; lukewarm water is also appropriate when the care label allows it. The Alliance for European Flax-Linen and Hemp gives 30°C as a general delicate-wash setting, while P&G fabric care scientist Kim Romine, quoted by Martha Stewart, prefers cold water for machine-washable linen. The garment’s own label takes precedence.

- Put delicate machine-washable garments in a mesh bag if you have one. Romine recommends one for machine-washable items.
- Take linen out promptly and shake it out to help limit set-in wrinkles.
When should you hand-wash linen?
Hand-washing is a gentler option for especially delicate, vintage, embroidered or embellished pieces, and is necessary when the label calls for it. It is not automatically safer for every garment: structured or lined items may be better left to a professional if the label recommends that care.
- Fill a basin with tepid water and add a gentle hand-wash solution.
- Submerge the item and soak it for up to 30 minutes, following the garment’s care instructions.
- Rinse gently until the wash solution is gone.
- Press water out against the basin or between clean towels. Do not wring or twist the fabric.
Does linen shrink in the wash?
Heat and harsh handling are avoidable risks, but there is no single shrinkage figure that applies to all linen. Fabric blend, finish, construction and prior treatment vary. To reduce unnecessary exposure, stay within the care label’s temperature limit, use a gentle cycle and avoid high dryer heat or prolonged drying.

Can you put linen in the dryer?
Air-drying is the conservative choice when the label permits it: hang the item or lay it flat, and avoid direct sunlight when preserving color matters. If tumble drying is allowed, use low heat briefly and remove the item while slightly damp. Linen dries quickly, so extended heat is usually unnecessary; laundry professional Melia Long makes that point in Vogue.
Air-dried linen can feel stiff at first, but it softens with wear and laundering. A brief steam or a few minutes in a permitted low-heat dryer can relax the fabric before you hang or lay it flat to finish drying.

How do you treat stains on linen?
Blot a fresh stain rather than rubbing it, then pretreat it before washing. Pay attention to areas where soil commonly builds up, such as cuffs, collars, necklines, hems and underarms. Test the product in a hidden spot and follow both the garment label and the treatment’s instructions. Check that a stain is gone before ironing or applying dryer heat, which can make a remaining stain harder to remove.
Bleach is not a routine linen-care step. Advice varies: a Laundress representative quoted by Martha Stewart cautions that bleach can permanently alter garment color, while other care guidance discusses oxygen bleach for some stains or household linen. Use it only if the item’s label, colorfastness and the product directions support it.

How do you reduce wrinkles or iron linen?
Linen naturally creases; wrinkles are not evidence that it was washed incorrectly. For a smoother finish, steam the item or press it while slightly damp, following the label and taking care with color and construction. Iron settings are not universal: the Alliance gives around 200°C as general guidance but recommends a medium setting for shirts, while Hobbs advises medium-hot steam. Use the garment’s own instructions rather than treating those general settings as interchangeable.
If you prefer linen’s relaxed look, smooth the item by hand after washing and let it air-dry. A perfectly crisp finish is optional, not a requirement for caring for the fabric.
