You can identify some damage by looking at an accessible cord, but symptoms such as sparks, unusual heat, burning odors, buzzing, shocks, or repeated breaker trips can point to a problem in household wiring. Stop using a visibly damaged removable cord; for suspected damage to wiring, outlets, or switches, contact a qualified electrician rather than attempting a repair.
Signs of damage you can see on a removable cord
Look for cuts, breaks, cracks, fraying, or insulation that is worn through or missing. Damaged insulation can leave live wires exposed, creating shock and fire hazards, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s CPSC Guide to Home Wiring Hazards.
If a cord has visible damage, stop using it. The CPSC advises replacing the damaged cord or the equipment. Replace a cord only when it is a removable, suitable replacement part; choose one that meets the connected appliance’s requirements. A replacement extension cord may address a damaged extension cord, but it cannot fix wiring installed in a wall.
Warning signs that may involve household wiring
Problems with fixed wiring, outlets, or switches may not be visible. The Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) list warning signs including:

#1 Best Overall
- Be aware of voltage easily - the tip glows red and a beeper sounds when voltage is detected
- Continuous self-test so you always know it’s working
- Voltage detection range for wide application use - 90 V to 1000 V AC or 200 V to 1000 V AC
- Audible/Silent mode for added convenience
- Arcs or sparks
- Outlets or switch plates that feel hot or look discolored
- A burning or hot-insulation odor
- Unusual sizzling or buzzing sounds
- Shocks or tingling when using an electrical device
- Lights that flicker or dim
- Repeated outages, breaker trips, or blown fuses
These symptoms can signal an electrical problem, but none alone identifies the fault or where it is located. ESFI advises: “If you observe any of these signs in your home, call in a licensed electrician to inspect its wiring.” The NFPA Electrical Safety: Checklist similarly advises contacting a qualified electrician or landlord about its listed warning signs.
What to do next
If a removable cord is visibly damaged
- Stop using the cord.
- Replace it with a suitable cord if it is designed to be replaced, or replace the equipment. Do not use a replacement extension cord as a fix for damaged fixed wiring.
If you suspect a problem with installed wiring
- Do not open walls, remove outlet or switch covers, or attempt to test or repair concealed wiring.
- Contact a qualified electrician to inspect the problem. Renters should notify their landlord as well; NFPA recommends calling a qualified electrician or landlord for the warning signs on its checklist.
Do not mistake a symptom for a diagnosis
Heat, odors, flickering, buzzing, or a breaker that trips repeatedly are reasons to seek an inspection, not proof of a particular damaged wire or its location. The guidance from ESFI, NFPA, and the CPSC supports escalation and replacement of damaged removable cords; it does not establish a homeowner method for diagnosing or repairing concealed wiring.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- SMART BUY: A complete, high-performance kit that offers convenience and value
- COMPLETE OUTLET TESTER TOOL KIT: Includes GFCI Tester (Cat. No. RT210) and Non-Contact Voltage Tester Pen (Cat. No. NCVT1P)
- DETECT COMMON WIRING PROBLEMS: Quickly identifies wiring issues in standard and GFCI receptacles
- GFCI OUTLET COMPATIBLE: Confirms the proper operation of ground fault protective devices in GFCI outlets
- VOLTAGE TESTER PEN: Non-contact detection of voltage in cables, circuit breakers, lighting fixtures, switches, and more
Rank #4
- VERSATILE VOLTAGE DETECTION: This Voltage Tester offers non-contact detection of low voltage in security, entertainment, communications, environmental control, and irrigation systems
- CLEAR INDICATION: Bright LED illuminates green to indicate tester is operational and flashes red and emits a beeping alert when voltage is detected
- BRIGHT FLASHLIGHT: Equipped with a bright flashlight, this tester illuminates the work area, allowing for enhanced visibility. The flashlight can also be used independently of the voltage detection function
- DUAL-RANGE DETECTION: Select voltage range of 12-1000V, or 70-1000V for targeted voltage detection
- LIGHTWEIGHT AND COMPACT: With its lightweight and compact design, this tester is easy to carry and features a pocket clip for convenient storage and quick access
Rank #3
- SAFETY FIRST: It will send out multiple alarms through sound and light. When the voltage is detected, the tip will send out red light and beep. When the higher the sensed voltage is, or the closer it is to the voltage source, it beeps at a higher frequency and the percentage value will be larger. At the same time, the screen will be red or green, red means high voltage and live wire are detected, green means low voltage and null wire are detected
- NON-CONTACT: With NCV inductive probe for AC voltage; Just place the tip near a terminal strip, outlet, or supply cord. When the tip glows red and the pen beeps, you know there's voltage present. The live wire detector can automatically detect the live or neutral wire. Ideal for breakpoint Test. Handy circuit tester for electricians, homeowners
- DUAL RANGE: Detects standard and low voltage (12-1000V AC / 70-1000V AC) for more sensitive and flexible measurements. Press the S button to adjust sensitivity and adapt low range for doorbells, thermostats, irrigation wiring etc.; The NCV sensor automatically recognizes the voltage and displays it on the bar graph, and the percentage value can display the voltage signal intensity more intuitively
- SECURITY LEVEL: IEC rated CAT III 1000V CAT IV 600V, Meets CE requirements; The electrical tester is safely double insulated. High Voltage Alert to warn you of voltage above 90V, the screen turn red and the safety symbol on the screen shines
- COMPACT DESIGN: Bright LED flashlight for work in dim ares; Low-Power-Indicator when battery voltage is below 2.5V; Automatic Power Off after 5 minutes without operation or signal detection; Pocket-sized, pen hook allows you to carry it in your shirt pocket. We provide 36-Month after sale service, Please feel free to contact us if you have any concerns
Rank #2
- NON-CONTACT DETECTION of AC voltage in cables, cords, circuit breakers, lighting fixtures, switches, non-tamper-resistant outlets, and wires
- CLEAR INDICATION: Bright LED illuminates green to indicate tester is operational and flashes red and emits a beeping alert when voltage is detected
