Mago Island is a Fijian island that was historically reported as Mel Gibson’s property. The often-repeated US$15 million figure is not backed here by a purchase record: one account describes it as the 2004 asking price, while another reports a completed purchase at that price based on People magazine. Neither establishes who owns the island today or whether visitors can access it.

Where is Mago Island?

Mago is in Fiji, an island nation in the South Pacific. Tourism Fiji describes the country’s varied island geography, but its general destination guide does not provide specific access details for Mago. Tourism Fiji’s geography guide

What is known about Mel Gibson and Mago Island?

In a 2007 notice, Fijian conservation organization NatureFiji-MareqetiViti described Mago as actor-producer Mel Gibson’s property. That is evidence of how the island was described at the time, not confirmation of present-day ownership. Knight Frank also called Mago Gibson-owned in a 2013 property publication, another historical snapshot rather than a current ownership record. Was Mago Island sold for $15 million?

Reports agree on a figure of 15 million dollars but differ on what it represents. The Fiji Times retrospective says the 5,411-acre island was on sale for $15 million in 2004. An ABC News report by AFP, published on 10 December 2004, says Gibson bought it for US$15 million and attributes that account to People magazine. These are media reports, not a purchase contract, official land record or direct confirmation from Gibson.

The area figures also vary slightly: The Fiji Times gives 5,411 acres, while Knight Frank described Mago as a 5,400-acre private retreat in 2013. Those figures may reflect rounding; neither source is a contemporary survey.

What has been reported about Mago’s wildlife?

NatureFiji-MareqetiViti reported that it carried out a Conservation Values study on Mago in May 2007. The organization described remaining forest stands, many on difficult limestone karst, and identified three globally threatened species found on the island: the Sheath-tailed Bat, Samoan Flying Fox and Friendly Ground-Dove.

The organization said its study made recommendations to improve conservation status and island management, and that island management was considering them at the time. This dated account does not establish whether the recommendations were later adopted or what conservation practices are in place today. NatureFiji-MareqetiViti said the report was available from its secretariat. NatureFiji-MareqetiViti’s account of the study

Can you visit Mago Island?

The available sources do not establish that Mago is open to visitors, that it has lodging or a tourism operation, or that there is a booking route. Its description as a private island or retreat is not evidence of public access. Do not treat general information about Fiji travel as confirmation that a trip to Mago is possible.

What remains uncertain today?

  • Current ownership: the cited ownership descriptions date to 2007 and 2013; they do not verify who owns Mago now.
  • The transaction price: the $15 million figure appears in accounts framed as an asking price and as a reported purchase price, but no independent transaction record is provided.
  • Access and conservation: the sources do not establish current visitor rules or whether the 2007 management recommendations were implemented.
