For Podocarpus macrophyllus, the keys to success are a well-drained planting site, enough sun for the shape you want, and watering adjusted to conditions rather than a rigid schedule. It can grow as a large evergreen tree or be shaped into a hedge; choose the plant and location with its potential size in mind.
Choose a site with good drainage and suitable light
Light
Full sun supports the best growth and form. Partial shade is tolerated, but growth is slower and the plant tends to become looser. North Carolina State Extension defines full sun as at least six hours of direct sunlight and partial shade as two to six hours in its plant-profile guidance. Pick the sunniest practical location if you want dense growth; a shadier spot may suit a less formal specimen.
Soil and drainage
Drainage matters more than matching one ideal soil recipe. UF/IFAS lists clay, sand, and loam, including acidic and alkaline soils, as possibilities when the ground drains well, and warns against wet soil. North Carolina State Extension describes a preference for rich, slightly acidic, moist, well-drained soil. UC Statewide IPM notes that alkaline, heavy, or damp soil can be associated with yellowing. Taken together, these profiles support trying a range of soils but not planting where water remains around the roots.
Water according to establishment and conditions
Water regularly while a new plant establishes, allowing for rainfall, heat, and how quickly the soil drains. Once established, podocarpus is reported to tolerate drought well, but that does not mean it should be left dry in every situation: UC Statewide IPM advises regular water along with good drainage. Containers and hot, dry weather can require more attention than an established plant in the ground. The extension guidance does not establish a universal amount or weekly interval, so check soil moisture and adjust rather than following a fixed calendar.

- The Podocarpus Maki is an evergreen shrub with dense, upright growth and glossy dark green foliage that provides year-round beauty.
- Podocarpus Maki grows to a mature size of 8–10 feet tall and 3–4 feet wide, making it ideal for narrow hedges, privacy screens, and foundation plantings.
- This shrub thrives in USDA Zones 7–11 and performs well in full sun to partial shade with well-draining soil. Once established, Podocarpus Maki is drought-tolerant, low maintenance, and highly resistant to pests, diseases, and air pollution.
- Its refined, columnar form requires minimal pruning, offering a more polished alternative to traditional hedge plants like boxwood or holly.
Allow for mature size and choose a growth habit
Podocarpus can be kept as a hedge or allowed to become a tree. UF/IFAS gives an untrimmed height of 30–40 feet in its 2019 profile and 35–50 feet in its profile revised March 2024. These are potential-scale warnings, not guaranteed dimensions for every location. North Carolina State Extension also describes a compact shrub presentation while noting that tree form can reach 50 feet.
For a site with limited space, assess the actual cultivar or variety before planting. UF/IFAS describes var. angustifolius as narrow and columnar, var. appressus as a low shrub, and var. maki as erect-branched and columnar. North Carolina State Extension lists ‘Maki’ at 8–10 feet tall; the page does not display a publication date. Nursery naming and descriptions may vary, so confirm the expected mature height and width for the plant being sold.

- Low-maintenance plant with a slow to moderate growth rate, ideal for busy gardeners seeking a hassle-free addition
- Grows well in well-drained soil and can tolerate a range of soil types, ensuring easy establishment and care
Check local climate suitability, especially in colder areas
Published hardiness descriptions differ. North Carolina State Extension lists USDA zones 7a–9b for the species and says container-grown plants can be moved indoors in colder regions. UF/IFAS’s 2023 pest guide describes southern yew as suited to zones 8B–11. These institutional ranges are not a guarantee for every cultivar, exposure, or microclimate. Check guidance from a local extension service and ask the nursery about the specific plant. The cited profiles do not provide a complete indoor winter-care schedule.
Prune for the form you want
Little pruning is needed for basic growth. A specimen allowed to keep its natural shape needs less intervention than a formal screen. For a hedge or clipped outline, UF/IFAS says hand pruning gives a better appearance than shearing with a hedge trimmer. Make shaping cuts with hand pruners when finish matters; the available guidance does not specify a universal pruning season or frequency.

- Family: Podocarpaceae Macrophyllus (podocarpus Family) Common Name : Common Names: podocarpus, yew podocarpus, Japanese yew, Buddhist pine Growth Rate: moderate to slow Although it has a moderate to slow rate of growth, it can become very large if left alone to grow undisturbed.
- A faster growth rate can be achieved with regular feeding for the first few years. Shape: upright to somewhat oval shrub Podocarps are gymnosperms like pines, spruces and cycads. They have needlelike leaves that are flat and a lustrous dark green.
- Easy to grow: This is a tough plant which can grow very well in urban conditions and even indoors. Container Plant or even house plant. Light Exposure(s) Preferred: Shade to sun Moisture: Fertile, well drained soil preferred but yew pine is tolerant of many types except for those that are constantly wet. Salt Tolerance: High Good coastal plant; tolerates salt spray and withstands heat!
- Usage: Podocarpus works well in both informal and sheared hedges and as a foundation shrub. It's effective beside tall buildings, or anywhere a tall, narrow specimen is needed. Because of shade tolerance, makes an ideal courtyard tree. Some grand, ancient podocarps grace the heights of 3-story courtyards in New Orleans. Height : 20-30 feet Hardiness Zone(s) Preferred: 7+-11 Podocarpus zones: 7-11

Propagation is possible, but detailed home steps are not established
Podocarpus can be propagated by seed or cuttings. UF/IFAS reports that hardwood cuttings root easily and produce more uniform trees than seedlings. That makes cuttings a practical option for maintaining consistency, but the extension guidance cited here does not give a step-by-step home method or timing.
Diagnose problems before treating them
UF/IFAS describes podocarpus as generally pest resistant, while noting occasional scale, mites, and sooty mold; its pest guide also covers dieback, Fusarium wilt, root rot, aphids, and eriophyid mites. Start with what you can observe and consider drainage and irrigation before reaching for a treatment.

- Dieback: UF/IFAS advises pruning affected growth back to green wood and disposing of the removed material. It says no effective fungicide treatment is available for this condition.
- Wilting or suspected root problems: Check whether the soil stays wet. The guidance emphasizes good drainage and reducing irrigation during rainy periods.
- Curled or stunted new tips, or sooty mold: Aphids can be associated with stunted or curled terminal growth, and sooty mold may also be present. Confirm the likely cause before considering pest control, and follow the current product label if a pesticide is appropriate.
- Yellowing: Heavy, alkaline, or damp soil may be involved, according to UC Statewide IPM. Review drainage and soil conditions rather than assuming the plant needs fertilizer.
- Magnesium deficiency: UF/IFAS notes this can occur on sandy soils and mentions magnesium sulfate as a correction. This is a specific response to a diagnosed deficiency, not a routine application.
Keep plant material away from children and pets
North Carolina State Extension flags low-severity poisoning if podocarpus is eaten. UF/IFAS warns that similar-looking seeds are toxic and advises against ingesting any part that resembles fruit. Do not treat its fleshy, fruit-like structures as edible, and keep potentially ingestible material away from children and pets.
