To cool your home for less, block heat before it gets inside, reduce avoidable indoor heat, and use fans to improve comfort while people are in a room. Start with reversible steps such as shading sunny windows, adjusting the thermostat modestly, and checking the air filter. Window-opening and fan advice depends on outdoor temperature, humidity, air quality, and heat-safety conditions.
1. Raise the thermostat modestly when it feels comfortable
Set the thermostat a little higher than usual rather than making a large jump. ENERGY STAR reports that raising the setting by two degrees while using a ceiling fan can lower air-conditioning costs by up to 14%. That is a potential saving, not a guaranteed result; actual costs depend on the home, equipment, weather, and how the household uses cooling. If someone is medically vulnerable to heat or uncomfortable, prioritize safe indoor temperatures over savings.
2. Use ceiling fans in occupied rooms
A ceiling fan moves air across people, helping sweat evaporate and making a room feel cooler. It does not lower the room’s air temperature, so turn it off when nobody is there. Fans work best as a comfort aid that may let you use a slightly higher thermostat setting, not as a replacement for air conditioning in dangerous heat.
ENERGY STAR says certified ceiling fans with lights are 60% more efficient than standard ceiling fans with lights. That comparison concerns fan efficiency, not a 60% reduction in a household’s total cooling bill.

3. Shade windows that get strong sun
Windows facing strong morning or afternoon sun can admit substantial heat. Use drapes, shades, or roller shades to block sunlight; awnings or louvers outside the window can be more effective because they stop more heat before it enters. Close coverings when direct sun is heating the room, and open them when sunlight is not a problem and daylight is useful.
4. Open windows only when outdoor conditions help
When outside air is cooler than the air indoors, opening windows can help flush out heat. If the home’s layout and conditions allow it, openings on opposite sides can create cross-ventilation. Close windows again when outdoor air becomes hotter, and consider local air quality before bringing outside air in.
Ventilation is not an effective cooling strategy in hot, humid climates, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. In those conditions, opening windows may add heat and moisture rather than improve comfort.

5. Seal obvious gaps around doors and windows
Weatherstripping around leaky doors and windows is a relatively low-cost weatherization step that can reduce unwanted air movement. Look for visible gaps, drafts, or worn seals, then use a product suited to the location and the way the door or window operates. Avoid sealing required ventilation openings or combustion-air supplies; air sealing should not compromise safe ventilation.
ENERGY STAR estimates that sealing air leaks and adding insulation could save up to $190 a year. The estimate combines measures and is not a guaranteed saving for a particular home.
6. Check the attic before adding insulation
Attic air sealing and insulation may help limit heat entering from above, and ENERGY STAR notes that many homes have accessible attics. But insulation is a larger project than applying weatherstripping, and it should be planned around the condition of the roof and the building systems.

Repair roof leaks before installing insulation. The Department of Energy’s whole-house weatherization approach includes checks of the building envelope, HVAC and electrical systems, and health and safety conditions. If the attic has moisture, wiring, ventilation, or access concerns, get qualified advice before beginning work.
7. Check the air filter and keep registers clear
Inspect the cooling system’s air filter monthly. A dirty filter can restrict airflow and make the system work harder. Replace it with the type specified for the equipment, and follow the manufacturer’s guidance for replacement timing; the appropriate interval varies, so there is no universal schedule that fits every system.

8. Consider a programmable or smart thermostat
A programmable thermostat can reduce unnecessary cooling when the household is away or asleep, provided its schedule suits the occupants and the HVAC system. ENERGY STAR says an ENERGY STAR certified smart thermostat can reduce heating and cooling bills by more than 8%, averaging about $50 a year; it gives an approximate potential saving of $100 a year for homes unoccupied much of the day. These are estimates, not promises, and savings depend on usage and the home.
Check that a thermostat is compatible with your heating and cooling equipment before buying or installing it. If the system uses specialized controls or wiring, consult the equipment documentation or a qualified technician.
9. Limit heat and moisture from household activities
Cooking appliances can add heat indoors, so when practical, avoid unnecessary oven or stovetop use during the hottest part of the day. Use kitchen and bathroom exhaust fans to vent moisture outdoors. Removing humid air can make conditions more comfortable and help control moisture, but follow the home’s ventilation needs rather than trying to make the building airtight.

10. Use fans with heat-safety judgment
Fans can improve comfort in ordinary conditions, but they do not cool the air. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency advises against using a fan in a closed room and against relying on electric fans to cool rooms when temperatures are in the mid-90s Fahrenheit or higher. During dangerous heat, use air conditioning if available or seek an air-conditioned location when possible, especially if someone is at elevated risk.
Which improvements should you try first?
Start with the measures that fit your home and cost little or nothing: shade sunlit windows, adjust the thermostat only as comfort allows, use fans only in occupied rooms, and check airflow and filters. Weatherstripping and a compatible thermostat may require purchases. Attic work and window replacement are larger investments; assess the home and likely benefit before committing.
Renters can usually try portable or reversible measures such as curtains, fan use, and thermostat adjustments where controls are available. Ask the owner before making permanent changes to windows, weatherstripping, insulation, or HVAC equipment. No single ranking of savings applies to every house: climate, humidity, sun exposure, equipment, insulation, tenancy, and household heat sensitivity all affect which step makes sense.
