A veranda is generally a roofed, open or partly enclosed outdoor gallery attached to a building, often extending along one or more sides. A porch is often a smaller covered area at or near an entrance, particularly in American usage. The words overlap, though, and there is no universal architectural rule separating them.
What is a veranda?
A veranda is an outdoor space attached to a building, usually with a roof and open sides. It may have a railing or partial enclosure, and it often runs along the front or sides of a house. The Architecture Dictionary describes it as a large, open, roofed porch that can extend across the front and sides; Houston’s historic-preservation glossary likewise describes a veranda as lining one or more sides of a building.
“Veranda” is also spelled “verandah.” The form of the structure matters more than the spelling.
How is a veranda different from a porch?
In common residential usage, a veranda tends to be a broader outdoor gallery, while a porch tends to be a covered space by an entrance. These are helpful cues, not firm definitions: a veranda can be called a porch, and porch can refer to a veranda.

For example, a roofed gallery that runs along the front and side of a house fits the usual description of a veranda. A smaller covered landing at the front door fits the common entrance-focused sense of porch. Either feature may be called a porch in some contexts.
Why the terms vary by region and period
Dictionary usage differs by region. Cambridge’s US entries list porch as a synonym of veranda, while its UK entry for porch emphasizes a covered structure in front of a building entrance. Dictionary.com records an American porch sense centered on a covered approach or vestibule, as well as a British sense that includes a veranda or portico along the outside of a building.

The distinction has also shifted over time. The National Gallery of Art’s History of Early American Landscape Design notes that architectural writers sometimes used “veranda,” “piazza” and “porch” interchangeably, while other writers distinguished them by features such as the roof or by the porch’s position near the main entrance. Its account traces the word’s appearance in architectural treatises and records an earlier use in Pehr Kalm’s 1748 travel account. Today’s simple size distinction should not be treated as timeless.
An example from A. J. Downing’s The Architecture of Country Houses (1850), reproduced by the National Gallery of Art, shows how the terms could describe connected parts of a structure: “This porch, being pierced with arches on each side, opens on a continuous veranda, 10 feet wide and 80 feet long, which affords a fine promenade at all seasons”. The dimensions describe Downing’s particular example, not a standard size.

How to describe one clearly
If the label matters—for a construction description, property listing or renovation conversation—describe the structure rather than relying on a strict distinction between the words. Say whether it is roofed, how open or enclosed it is, where it sits, and whether it follows one side or several sides of the building. Those details communicate the design even when people use “porch” and “veranda” differently.
