Wait until the soil has warmed and plants are growing, lay the clippings loosely, and leave a gap around each stem. Avoid thick, wet layers: they can mat, block water and air, or heat up as they decompose.
Check the clippings before using them
Use clippings only when you know the lawn’s treatment history. Do not use material from herbicide-treated turf until the product label allows it and its waiting period has passed. Extension guidance differs: Rutgers NJAES advises waiting at least three mowings after herbicide treatment, while Iowa State gives two or three mowings after a broadleaf herbicide. Those intervals are not a substitute for the specific product label.
If you cannot confirm the treatment history, choose another mulch rather than guessing. Iowa State suggests shredded leaves, straw, or pine needles; Minnesota Extension also recommends weed-free straw or other organic material.
Dry the clippings and wait for warm soil
Spread the clippings out to dry before applying them. UNH Cooperative Extension recommends drying for 2–3 days. Fresh, wet clippings can stick together and form a dense mat. Nebraska Extension warns that fermenting clippings can release heat and ammonia that may injure plants.

Apply mulch after the tomatoes have begun growing and the soil has warmed. Texas A&M AgriLife uses a soil temperature of 70°F in its regional tomato guidance; that is a local recommendation, not a universal threshold. UNH and Rutgers likewise advise waiting until crops are growing and soil is warm.
Spread a loose layer and leave room around stems
- Clear the soil surface. Remove weeds and any clumps of wet or matted grass.
- Lay the clippings loosely. Extension depth recommendations vary by region and conditions. UNH and Iowa State recommend about 2–3 inches; Rutgers and Minnesota recommend 3–4 inches; Texas A&M suggests 4–6 inches in its regional guide. Start with a moderate, loose layer and add gradually as it settles rather than compressing a thick layer at once.
- Keep clippings off the stems. Leave about 2–3 inches of bare space around each plant base. UNH cautions that mulch against stems can encourage disease.
- Check after watering or rain. If the layer has matted or water is no longer reaching the soil readily, loosen it or remove some of it.
If you need to use fresh clippings, use a much thinner layer: South Dakota State advises just ½–1 inch where fresh grass compacts easily. Drying first is the safer approach for avoiding mats.

What grass-clipping mulch does for tomatoes
A mulch layer can help conserve soil moisture, suppress weeds, moderate soil temperature, reduce soil splashing onto foliage, and reduce fruit spoilage where tomatoes touch the ground. Iowa State Extension describes these benefits, but the cited extension guidance does not establish a specific tomato-yield increase from grass clippings.
Mulch is not a replacement for supporting plants. Texas A&M notes that caging or trellising is more helpful than mulch alone for keeping fruit from touching the ground.
