The best fence is the one that suits its job: a solid wood, vinyl or composite fence for privacy; chain link for visible, practical containment; and aluminum or steel for decorative security with open sightlines. Before comparing materials, decide what the fence must do, how much upkeep you will accept, and what your site and local rules allow.
Start with what the fence needs to do
One fence rarely excels at every job. A solid panel blocks views but also catches more wind; an open fence preserves sightlines but offers little privacy. Use the main purpose to narrow the choices, then weigh cost, maintenance, terrain and appearance.
- Privacy: Consider solid wood, vinyl or composite panels.
- Visible containment: Chain link is a practical option when you want to keep pets in or mark a boundary without blocking views.
- Decorative security: Aluminum or steel can define an area while keeping it visible.
- Garden or livestock control: Choose an appropriate wire, mesh or electric system for the animals and area involved.
- Property-line definition: Picket or split-rail fencing can mark a boundary without creating a solid visual barrier.

These are broad material tendencies, not guarantees of performance. For example, gates, posts, installation details, exposure and local requirements all affect how a complete fence works.
Choose privacy, sightlines and upkeep deliberately
When privacy matters most
Solid wood, vinyl and composite panels are the natural shortlist. Wood offers multiple styles and can be stained or painted, but that finish needs periodic attention. Vinyl trades a higher initial outlay in some comparisons for less routine work: Lowe’s says it needs only occasional rinsing and typically does not rot or fade. Composite offers a wood-like appearance with resistance to insects, splitting and decay.

Match the fence to pets, children, gardens or wildlife
For pets or children, assess the whole enclosure rather than just the material: the opening size, fence height, gate and latch, gaps at the ground, and any climbable features all matter. Chain link is a common visible-containment choice, while solid panels add privacy. Picket gaps may be too wide for small pets. Local rules can impose additional requirements, particularly for pool fences.
For gardens or livestock, select wire or mesh suited to the animal and purpose. University of Georgia Cooperative Extension says lower gauge numbers indicate thicker, stronger wire, and galvanized treatment increases life expectancy. For raccoon and opossum exclusion, its 2022 guidance recommends a 60- to 72-inch-high fence, a buried 24-inch horizontal apron and a flexible upper section that bends as animals climb. These dimensions are specific to that wildlife guidance, not a universal fence specification.

The same Extension publication gives examples of treated wood-post life expectancy: treated redwood, 20–30 years; treated pine, poplar, sycamore or sweet gum, 25–30 years; and treated cedar, 20–25 years. These are examples for posts, not a service-life guarantee for an entire fence system.

On uneven ground, component or stick-built fences can often be racked to follow the contour. Some preassembled panels have limited ability to rack and may need to be stair-stepped instead. Confirm the approach before choosing panels, because the terrain affects both appearance and how gaps at the bottom are handled.

Solid panels block views but expose more surface to wind than open styles, so consider site exposure and the design’s structural requirements. A fence that is easy to repair also depends on whether matching panels, posts, rails, fabric and gates are available. Ask suppliers about replacement parts for the specific product line before ordering.

Check the site, rules and full project cost before buying
- Confirm rules: Check local building codes and HOA regulations. Fence-height, placement and pool-fence requirements vary by location.
- Verify the boundary: Confirm property lines before installation so the fence is placed where intended.
- Locate underground utilities: Have utilities marked before digging post holes.
- Price the complete system: Include posts, rails, panels or fabric, gates, fasteners, concrete, tools, delivery and labor—not just the fence material.
- Get local quotes: No stable national installed-price figure was published; local labor, site conditions, material and scope determine the actual cost.
A practical way to narrow the choice
- For privacy with low routine upkeep: Start with vinyl or composite; compare their look, product details and local pricing.
- For a traditional, customizable privacy fence: Consider wood and budget for periodic cleaning and finishing.
- For visible containment on a tighter budget: Compare galvanized or coated chain link, adding slats only if partial screening is enough.
- For an open, decorative boundary: Look at aluminum or steel, checking finish and repair options.
- For slopes or animal exclusion: Choose a system designed for the terrain or target animal rather than adapting a decorative fence to a job it cannot perform.
