To get a Christmas tree to stand straight, first check the floor and stand, then center the trunk and confirm the stand fits the tree. For a live tree, also check that its base is flat and freshly cut; for an artificial tree, use the straightening method in that model’s manual. If it still wobbles or the stand is damaged, don’t decorate it or leave it in service until it is stable.
1. Check the floor and stand base
Put the tree on a solid, level surface. A floor that slopes or an improperly assembled base can make a tree lean even when its trunk is centered. Check that the stand is intact and that its legs or base are fully assembled and positioned as the manufacturer directs.
Fraser Hill Farm’s instructions for its products call for a level surface and, when troubleshooting a leaning or wobbling artificial tree, fully extended stand legs. Krinner likewise requires a solid, level, even surface and warns that an uneven or inclined surface reduces stability. These directions are specific to those products; check the manual for your own stand.
2. Re-center the tree in the stand
If the trunk is off-center, reposition it before trying other fixes. For a live tree, have another adult hold it steady while you work. Release or loosen the stand only as its instructions allow, bring the trunk upright and centered, then secure it gradually.

Some stands allow adjustment before the final lock. Krinner’s manual, for example, says to move a tree that is not yet straight horizontally until it is in the best position. Keep fingers and other body parts away from clamps and moving parts; a clamp can cause serious injury.
3. Check that the stand fits the tree
A stand must be rated for the tree’s height and trunk diameter, and its clamp must hold the trunk securely. Iowa State University Extension recommends checking trunk diameter when choosing a live tree and selecting one with a straight trunk. Stand capacities vary by model: Krinner’s manual lists different maximum heights and trunk diameters for its L, XL and XXL stands.
Check the capacity printed in your stand’s instructions rather than assuming another model’s limits apply. If the trunk is too large, too small for the mechanism to grip, or the stand is damaged, don’t force the fit. Use an intact, appropriately sized stand.

4. For a live tree, check the cut at the trunk base
A live tree should sit on a flat base. If it has not been prepared, Iowa State University Extension recommends cutting at least an inch from the bottom before bringing it indoors. A fresh, flat cut helps the trunk sit properly and supports water uptake. Put the tree in water promptly and keep the reservoir from running dry.
A fresh cut is not a fix for a trunk that is off-center in its stand. Don’t make an angled or V-shaped notch, drill the trunk, or shave its sides to force it into a stand. Extension says these steps do not help; shaving can remove the area beneath the bark where most water is taken up.

First make sure the stand is level and fully assembled. Then follow the instructions for that exact tree and stand; artificial-tree designs and adjustment hardware differ.

For example, one Fraser Hill Farm manual describes a cable-and-turnbuckle securing kit for select 12-foot artificial trees and warns against straightening those trees with the stand bolts. That warning is specific to the models covered by that manual, not a general rule for all artificial trees. Don’t adjust bolts or use other hardware to straighten a tree unless its instructions say to.
When to replace the stand or stop troubleshooting
Correct the setup if the surface is uneven, the base is assembled incorrectly, or the trunk is not centered. Consider a replacement stand if the existing one is damaged, cannot hold the trunk securely, or is not rated for the tree’s height and trunk diameter. If the tree still wobbles after the appropriate corrections, stop and make the setup stable before decorating or leaving it unattended.

Use only stabilization methods specified for the actual tree and stand, and do not let children operate stand clamps.
