A battery mower can handle a half-acre yard if its rated coverage suits the actual grass area and conditions. A lot measuring half an acre may have far less mowable lawn, while thick grass, slopes, or a fast pace can cut into a mower’s stated capacity. Gas remains a sensible option if you want uninterrupted mowing or already have a serviceable mower and accept engine maintenance. There is no universal cost winner: compare the full kit, energy and fuel prices, upkeep, and eventual battery replacement.
Start with the area you actually mow
A half-acre lot is 21,780 square feet, but the house, driveway, planting beds, and other non-grass areas reduce the lawn a mower must cover. Estimate the mowable grass, then account for conditions that may affect runtime: grass height and thickness, terrain, walking speed, and cutting height. Manufacturer acreage ratings are conditional estimates, not guarantees for every yard.
Can a battery mower finish a half-acre yard on one charge?
Some specific battery kits are rated for coverage at or above half an acre, but their claims use particular batteries and mowing assumptions. They are useful starting points, not independent comparisons or promises that any half-acre lawn will fit.
| Example | Manufacturer-stated coverage and time | Configuration and conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Milwaukee 2823-22HD | Up to one-half acre and up to 60 minutes | 21-inch self-propelled mower; two included M18 REDLITHIUM HIGH OUTPUT HD12.0 batteries and dual-bay rapid charger. The coverage estimate assumes removing one inch of grass at a self-propelled pace of 3 mph. Milwaukee says actual area varies with grass height, thickness, terrain, and speed. | Makita GML01SM | Up to three-fifths of an acre in 54 minutes or less | 21-inch self-propelled mower using two 40V XGT 4.0Ah batteries. This is Makita’s rating, not a comparative test against another battery mower or a gas mower. Makita product details |
| Honda battery mower reference points | Around 30 minutes and up to one-quarter acre with an 8Ah pack; approximately 45 minutes and 0.37 acres with a 12Ah pack | Honda’s model-specific guidance; its selector accounts for factors such as walking speed, grass type, and cut height. These figures illustrate variation between configurations, not a rating for every Honda mower. Honda mower selector |
Milwaukee states that the M18 FUEL 21-inch self-propelled dual-battery mower requires two M18 batteries to operate. Check the exact kit contents: a mower listing may not include the batteries and charger needed to reach its advertised coverage.

What one independent test can—and cannot—tell you
A 2025 report from the Florida Solar Energy Center at the University of Central Florida tested a Ryobi 40V mower on a flat plot of St. Augustine grass. With a fully charged 6Ah battery, self-propel at mid-speed, a grass catcher, and the deck at height position 2 of 6, it cut 6,700 square feet. That is a useful result for those stated conditions, not a universal runtime figure or a direct gas-versus-battery performance test. Read the FSEC report, Review of Cost of Gasoline vs Electric Walk-behind Mowers (FSEC-EN-36-25).
What changes the choice in real use?
Grass, terrain, and mowing schedule
Tall or dense grass, slopes, a lower cut, and a pace that uses more self-propel assistance can change how much ground a charge covers. If the lawn is often overgrown or the conditions are demanding, allow more margin than a maker’s best-case acreage estimate. A regular cut schedule can make a battery mower’s rated capacity more attainable; the half-acre label alone cannot settle the question.

Runtime, charging, and handling
Battery mowing means planning around charged packs and the system’s runtime. Compare charge time, required battery count, whether the charger is included, and whether extra compatible batteries are practical for your needs. Gas avoids waiting for a battery recharge during a session, but still requires fuel and engine upkeep. On either type, deck width, self-propel drive, terrain, and how the mower handles the grass matter alongside the power source.
Compare the full ownership cost—not just fuel or electricity
A fair comparison includes purchase price, what comes in the kit, electricity or gasoline, routine service and parts, battery replacement, warranty, and how often you mow. The FSEC report’s historical price comparison reproduces 2011 electricity and gasoline prices; those are not current prices. Its 2025 analysis discusses national-average energy prices, but a household’s result depends on local rates, fuel prices, use, and equipment costs. It does not establish total ownership cost for every buyer.

Honda’s ownership-cost material says its battery mowers avoid oil changes, air-filter replacements, spark plugs, and fuel stabilization, while deck cleaning and sharp blades remain necessary. It also discusses declining battery capacity over time and gives Honda-specific replacement prices and warranty terms. Those are Honda’s published claims, from a manufacturer that sells battery mowers—not universal specifications or a neutral estimate for every brand. Honda’s mower ownership-cost information.

Choose by the job and the equipment you have
A battery mower is a strong candidate when
- The actual mowable area fits a specific model’s rating with a margin for your grass, terrain, and pace.
- The necessary batteries and charger are included or their additional cost fits your budget.
- Reduced engine maintenance and avoiding fuel handling are valuable to you.
Gas may suit you better when
- You prioritize uninterrupted runtime and do not want to plan around charging.
- Your grass is difficult or often overgrown enough to put pressure on available battery capacity.
- You already own a serviceable gas mower and are comfortable maintaining its engine.
For either type, check deck width, self-propel drive, terrain and slope suitability, grass-management options, storage, warranty, and access to service. Do not rank brands by voltage alone: compare the actual mower and battery configuration.

A practical comparison checklist
- Measure or estimate mowable grass area rather than using the lot size.
- Read the coverage estimate’s assumptions, including grass removed, battery configuration, pace, and terrain.
- Confirm how many batteries the mower needs and whether the quoted kit includes batteries and a charger.
- Consider your grass height, thickness, slope, cutting height, and mowing frequency.
- Compare complete purchase cost, local energy or fuel expense, maintenance, battery replacement, warranty, and service access.
