For a low-cost plant with a current look, Trader Joe’s mini assorted succulents in terra-cotta pots are the clearest pick: the company’s listing gives a price of $3.29 each. For a more polished gift, its medium Phalaenopsis orchid in a ceramic pot is listed at $14.99. Seasonal decorative planters can be even more distinctive, but they are rotating finds—not reliable year-round stock.
Those are listed or reported prices, not a promise about what your local store charges today. Trader Joe’s says availability can depend on growers’ harvests and advises shoppers to check with their neighborhood store for current product information.
Which Trader Joe’s plants are affordable and on trend?
The best choices depend on whether you want the lowest entry price, a ready-to-gift display, or a seasonal conversation piece. These examples have different price dates and sources, so compare them as snapshots rather than as a current national price list.
| Plant or planter | Price evidence | Why it stands out | Availability |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mini assorted succulents in terra cotta | $3.29 each on Trader Joe’s official product listing | Compact plant, clay pot, and rotating species selection | Species vary with growers’ harvest; store availability can vary |
| Medium Phalaenopsis orchid in ceramic | $14.99 each on Trader Joe’s official product listing | Decorative container and a stated six-to-eight-week bloom period | Check the local store for current stock |
| Seasonal decorative succulent planters | The Kitchn reported $2.99 spring mini-succulent pots in March 2024 and $8.99 blue or tan ceramic cactus/succulent planters in August 2024 | The pot and seasonal theme do much of the visual work | Rotating finds; neither example establishes current or year-round availability |
| Cymbidium orchid in a basket | A Trader Joe’s crew member cited $19.99 in a 2024 company podcast transcript | Larger, gift-like presentation in a basket | The quoted price is a store-level example, not a current national price survey |
Best budget buy: mini assorted succulents
Trader Joe’s describes its mini succulents as “on-trend,” set in stylish clay pots, and offered in a changing selection of genera and species. Its official listing gives a price of $3.29 each. The small footprint and terra-cotta container make one easy to display on a desk, shelf, or sunny windowsill without committing to a large plant.

Care guidance on that listing is bright indoor light, or full to partial sun outdoors, and watering about once a week when the soil is dry. Treat “about once a week” as a starting point, not a calendar rule: the listing’s condition is that the soil should be dry. Exact plants in the display depend on growers’ harvest, so the species you see on one visit may not be the one available on another.
Best ready-to-gift pick: ceramic Phalaenopsis orchid
The medium Phalaenopsis orchid in a ceramic pot is listed by Trader Joe’s at $14.99 each. The company says its blooms last six to eight weeks and that the plant needs very little water. The ceramic container gives it a more finished presentation than a basic nursery pot, making this the stronger choice when appearance matters as much as the plant itself.

That bloom window describes the display period, not how long the orchid will remain in flower indefinitely. Keeping an orchid beyond its first flush of blooms requires continued care; the listed bloom duration alone does not guarantee reblooming.
Most distinctive: seasonal decorative succulent planters
With seasonal planters, the container is often the trend-forward feature. The Kitchn documented $2.99 mini succulents in white decorative pots in March 2024 and blue or tan ceramic cactus and succulent planters for $8.99 in August 2024. In a Trader Joe’s fall podcast transcript, the company also described succulents in sugar-skull, dog, and cat planters for Día de los Muertos.

These dated examples show the range of looks that may turn up, not a standing assortment or current price. If you have a particular theme or pot in mind, treat it as a lucky find and check the store rather than planning around its return.
Basket orchid: a larger display with a dated value comparison
In a 2024 episode transcript of Trader Joe’s Inside Trader Joe’s, crew member Miggi said a Cymbidium orchid in a basket could be bought for $19.99 and compared that with a $30–$40 starting price at other retailers. That is a crew member’s quoted comparison, not a verified market-wide survey or a guarantee of what a store charges now. It is useful as a snapshot of the company’s value pitch, but not as a current price benchmark.

How to choose the right plant for your space
- Choose the mini succulent if a low listed entry price, compact size, and a simple pot matter most—and you have a bright spot for it.
- Choose the ceramic Phalaenopsis if you want a more gift-ready presentation and a defined, several-week bloom display.
- Choose a seasonal planter if novelty and the container’s design matter more than getting a particular plant or repeating the same purchase later.
- Consider the basket Cymbidium if you find one and want a more substantial floral display; treat the cited $19.99 as a historical, store-level example.
For a specific cultivar, a larger specimen, or a reliably repeatable selection, a nursery or specialist plant retailer is a better place to look. Trader Joe’s own product information makes clear that its plant selection can shift with supply.
How to check what your local Trader Joe’s has
- Use online listings as clues, not live inventory. Trader Joe’s says not every product appears on its website, so a listing does not confirm that a nearby store has the item.
- Contact or visit your neighborhood store. Trader Joe’s directs shoppers there for current product information. Ask about the specific plant or planter you want, since the assortment can change.
- Inspect the actual plant before buying. For succulents, check the soil and choose a plant whose condition suits your space; for an orchid, look at the blooms and buds to judge the display you are taking home.
What the prices do—and do not—tell you
The $3.29 succulent and $14.99 ceramic Phalaenopsis are prices on Trader Joe’s official product listings. The $2.99 and $8.99 planter examples are from The Kitchn’s 2024 reporting, while the $19.99 Cymbidium figure comes from a crew member’s statement in a 2024 company transcript. A separate price-history page recorded mini assorted succulents at $2.99 and $3.29, and assorted mums at $6.99 and $7.99, on February 27, 2025. These records illustrate that even observed prices can differ; none establishes a current price at every store.
