A top-loading washer described as “without an agitator” usually uses an impeller: a low-profile cone or disc at the bottom of the tub instead of the traditional tall center post. The design can leave more room for laundry, but impeller washers differ in capacity, features, dimensions and efficiency. Compare the exact model and its EnergyGuide label rather than treating the category as one uniform product.
What “without an agitator” means
ENERGY STAR describes an impeller as a low-profile cone or disc that replaces the traditional agitator. The washer still moves water and laundry; “without an agitator” does not mean there is no wash action. Manufacturers use different wash systems, so the label alone does not establish how well a particular model cleans or how gently it treats garments.
Impellers can leave more usable space in the tub, which may help with larger items such as comforters. That category-level advantage is not a guarantee that every bulky item will fit: check the washer’s dimensions and capacity, and follow the item’s care label. ENERGY STAR’s clothes-washer guidance says top-load impeller washers have become a more energy- and water-efficient option than traditional top-load agitator washers, but individual models should be compared on their own specifications.

These examples illustrate different configurations; they are not a tested ranking. Features below are manufacturer-listed, not independent findings. Check current stock, finish, configuration and specifications with the manufacturer or retailer before buying.

How to compare capacity, fit and features
Capacity and laundry-room space
A larger nominal capacity may provide more room for bulky laundry, but capacity alone does not tell you whether a washer will fit your room or a particular item. Measure the installation space, including clearance for hoses and enough overhead space to open the lid. Compare those measurements with the exact model’s exterior dimensions, then consider the size and care instructions of items you wash.

Wash options and controls
Decide which options you will use rather than paying attention to feature names alone. Depending on the model, useful differences may include deep-water or Water Plus settings, presoak, a faucet, dispenser design, cycle selection, a manual dial or digital controls, and smart functions. Confirm which settings are actually included on the model in your chosen finish and configuration.
Impeller versus convertible models
Do not confuse a fixed impeller washer with a convertible model that can accept a removable agitator. Whirlpool’s comparison chart includes impeller, traditional agitator and removable-agitator products in the same top-load lineup. Check the individual model’s configuration: a removable-agitator feature should not be assumed from the phrase “top load” or from a brand’s broader lineup.

How to compare water and energy efficiency
Check the washer’s EnergyGuide label and its individual ENERGY STAR listing when available. ENERGY STAR explains two measures used to compare washer efficiency:
- IMEF (Integrated Modified Energy Factor): an energy-efficiency measure; higher is more efficient.
- IWF (Integrated Water Factor): gallons of water per cubic foot of capacity; lower is more water-efficient.
ENERGY STAR’s published qualifying criteria for residential top-loading washers over 2.5 cu. ft. are IMEF of at least 2.06 and IWF of no more than 4.3. The criteria page says these thresholds took effect April 22, 2021; certification should be verified for the individual model because specifications can change. ENERGY STAR’s current consumer guidance (accessed October 2, 2026) gives a general comparison of 14 gallons per load for full-sized ENERGY STAR certified washers versus 20 gallons for standard machines. Those figures are not measurements for the three models above. The same guidance says the average American family does about 300 loads annually; that is household context, not an estimate for a particular buyer. ENERGY STAR’s broad program comparison also describes certified washers as using about 20% less energy and 30% less water than regular washers. Do not use those category-level figures as a model-specific savings estimate; rely on the model’s EnergyGuide information for a direct comparison.

- Compare the exact washer’s exterior dimensions and stated capacity with your room and laundry needs.
- Review the EnergyGuide label and, where available, the washer’s individual ENERGY STAR listing and efficiency values.
- Choose the wash options, dispenser, faucet, control style or smart functions that matter to your household.
- Confirm whether the model is a fixed-impeller design or a convertible washer with a removable agitator.
- Verify current availability, finish and exact specifications with the seller; manufacturer lineups and retailer inventory can change.
Manufacturer feature pages do not establish comparative cleaning performance, durability, reliability or garment wear for the named models. Choose on verified specifications and the features you need rather than an unsupported “best cleaning” or “most reliable” claim.
