How to choose a kamado grill
Kamados are charcoal cookers with insulated bodies that can hold heat for grilling, low-and-slow smoking and baking. Construction, temperature control, cooking area and included cooking systems vary. Ceramic models and insulated-steel designs such as the Akorn also involve different tradeoffs in weight, price and durability.
- Cooking area and layout: Match the grate to the amount and type of food you usually cook. Oval or divided cooking setups can offer more flexibility for direct and indirect heat.
- Temperature control: A well-sealed, insulated cooker can hold heat efficiently, but controlling a low temperature and cooling the grill after a hot cook are distinct practical concerns.
- What is included: A stand, heat deflector or multi-level cooking system may be included or sold separately. Compare the complete setup you need, not just the grill.
- Cleanup and portability: Check how ash is removed and whether you can safely move the cooker. Heavy ceramic models generally call for a stable location and suitable support.
- Warranty: Coverage differs by model and component; read the applicable regional terms.

Which model fits your cooking setup?
For a premium ceramic all-rounder: Big Green Egg Large
Reviewed’s best-overall choice is aimed at buyers who value a versatile ceramic cooker and are prepared to account for its cost, accessories and cleanup. Reviewed says its 18-inch surface suits a range of meals and that the ConvEGGtor enables indirect cooking. Check what is included with the specific package: an accessory that expands cooking methods may add materially to the purchase price.
For a lower-cost entry: Char-Griller Akorn
Reviewed’s best-value label reflects its lower purchase price relative to premium options in that review, not a claim that every Akorn package is cheapest or that it matches ceramic models in durability. Cast-iron grates and ash cleanup are cited advantages; temperature control at low heat and construction durability are the main cautions. Food Network’s 2026 guide separately reports searing and indirect-cooking performance while also noting temperature overshoot and lower build quality.
Rank #2

- 2-Tier Divide & Conquer - Divide & Conquer Flexible Cooking System transforms the humble grill grate into the most powerful cooking tool in your arsenal. The revolutionary multi-level, half-moon design frees you to cook different foods in different styles at different temperatures—all at the same time

- Air Lift Hinge – The air lift hinge significantly reduces dome weight. The grill dome can be lifted with a single finger giving the most comfortable grilling experience there is.
- AMP (Advanced Multi-Panel) FireBox – The patent pending six-piece design eliminates breakage and increases grill efficiency.
For a feature-rich divided cooking system: Kamado Joe Classic III
Kamado Joe’s own product comparison highlights features including its multi-level Divide & Conquer system and ash drawer. These can matter if you want to arrange different cooking zones or simplify ash removal. Treat those as the maker’s descriptions, and also consider Reviewed’s reported concerns about lid and side-table issues, the draft-door screen and customer service.
For an oval layout and dual-zone cooking: Primo Oval XL 400
Reviewed describes an oval ceramic cooker with dual-zone capability and a high lid, but reports a substantial 305-pound weight. Plan the grill’s permanent location and support before buying; the cited review also warns that the handle can heat up. Verify the exact model and current stock with a retailer.

- VERSATILE KAMADO GRILLING AND SMOKING: Cook across a 200°F to 700°F temperature range to smoke low and slow, roast, bake, grill, or sear over real charcoal for authentic barbecue flavor.
- PORTABLE, TRAVEL-READY DESIGN: A compact 20" x 20" x 26" frame weighs just 33 pounds and features side handles and a locking lid, so charcoal grilling travels easily to tailgates, campsites, parks, and picnics.
- TRIPLE-WALL INSULATED STEEL CONSTRUCTION: The insulated steel body retains heat and limits airflow for greater fuel efficiency, steadier temperatures, and longer burn times that keep meats juicy and tender.
- 155 SQ. IN. COOKING CAPACITY: Thick cast iron cooking grates provide 155 square inches of cooking space with room for up to 8 burgers at once, enough for a couple or a small group.
- PRECISE TEMPERATURE CONTROL: Indexed dual adjustable dampers and a built-in temperature gauge let you fine-tune airflow and hold your target temperature, from low-temperature smoking to high-heat searing.
For a large specified cooking surface: Weber Summit Kamado E6
Weber’s current US product page lists a 24-inch diameter and 452 square inches of cooking area. That is a useful specification for planning capacity, but it does not by itself prove how the E6 compares in cooking performance with the other models. Weber’s US page lists ten years for the bowl, lid and center ring; five years for the One-Touch cleaning system and plastic components, excluding fading or discoloration; and two years for remaining parts. These are US terms, not a global warranty promise.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Budget for the complete grill, not the bare cooker
A price comparison is meaningful only when the package includes what you need for your intended cooking. Stands and accessories can substantially raise the total cost. For indirect cooking, Reviewed identifies the Big Green Egg ConvEGGtor; an ash tool can help with cleaning. Kamado Joe lists its Divide & Conquer system as part of its cooking approach. Confirm whether each item is included, compatible with the exact model and available from a retailer before ordering. Reviewed Kamado Joe

Check these details before you buy
- Confirm the exact variant. Match the model name and identifier on the listing to the grill you intend to buy, especially for the Akorn, where sources caution that variants may differ.
- Price the whole setup. Add any required stand, deflector, cooking system or cleaning tools to the grill price, and verify what the package actually includes.
- Plan placement and movement. Check the grill’s weight, the support surface and the route to its permanent location. This matters particularly for the 305-pound Primo weight reported by Reviewed.
- Read the warranty for your region. Confirm which components are covered, for how long, and under what terms. Do not apply Weber’s US warranty schedule to another country.
- Check seller and stock. Confirm current availability, seller identity, return terms and parts support before completing the purchase.
