The easiest DIY soda can truck uses one aluminum can, two axles and four wooden wheels. For a more recognizable recycled can truck, the MAKE design joins 12 cans, uses 11 bottle tops as wheels and fittings, and adds four kabob-skewer axles. In either version, adult handling of cut metal, accurately aligned axle holes and fully cured adhesive determine whether the finished truck is safe and rolls properly.
Choose the truck design
| Design | Materials and method | Best for | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Multi-can truck | 12 cans, 11 plastic bottle tops, four kabob skewers, super glue, a knife and scissors; assemble from a template. | A semi-truck silhouette and a larger recycled-material gift. | More cutting, joining and alignment; more adhesive joints to check. |
| One-can truck | One aluminum can, drill, two wooden axles, two hub caps, two wooden wheels and paint. | Beginners who want fewer parts and a quick rolling chassis. | Less detailed bodywork and a smaller decoration area. |
| Traditional tin-can build | Separate chassis, cab, wheels, axles and optional fittings, as described in Edward Thatcher’s Making Tin Can Toys. | Experienced makers interested in metalworking and historical techniques. | More fabrication skill and greater exposure to sharp metal edges. |
Safety before you start
- An adult should cut or drill every beverage can. Thin aluminum can leave razor-sharp edges and can be crushed during play.
- File, fold or cover every cut edge before assembly. Run a fingertip over the rim only after finishing it and wear eye protection while drilling.
- Bob’s Crafts describes a similar can train as an ornament rather than a children’s toy; treat an unreinforced soda-can truck the same way until all edges and joints are secured.
- Keep knives, scissors, drills, skewers and cyanoacrylate (super glue) away from children. Let glue cure completely before handling or rolling tests.
- Inspect the truck before each use: no loose wheels, exposed points, split glue joints or crushed body panels.
Build the one-can version
Gather and prepare the parts
- Wash and dry an aluminum beverage can. Remove the pull tab if it will interfere with the body.
- Collect a drill, two straight wooden axles, two wooden wheels, two additional wheels or hub caps for the opposite ends, paint and suitable adhesive. The method calls for two wooden axles, two wooden wheels and two hub caps; use matching wheels for a balanced set.
- Mark two wheel positions on each side of the can. Use a ruler or a simple paper guide so the marks on opposite sides are at the same height and directly opposite each other.
Drill aligned axle holes
- Support the empty can so it cannot roll. Drill four holes through the side walls: two for the front axle and two for the rear axle.
- Check alignment by sliding an axle through each pair before adding wheels. If an axle rubs or sits diagonally, correct the holes now; crooked holes cause binding and wandering.
- Deburr the holes with a file and cover any sharp burrs. Do not proceed while an edge can cut skin or scrape an axle.
Install wheels and axles
- Thread one wooden wheel onto each axle.
- Pass the axles through the can, then add the remaining wheels on the outside.
- Secure the outer wheels with the hub caps or another construction-appropriate retainer. Leave enough clearance that each wheel spins without rubbing the can.
- Allow adhesive to cure according to its label. Roll the truck gently on a flat surface only after the bond is hard.
Finish the body
Paint the can after the rolling test has passed, or mask the axle areas first if you want them to remain clean. Add a cab face, grille, windows or load markings without covering the wheel clearance. Paint is decorative only; it does not make thin aluminum structurally stronger.
Build the 12-can soda-can truck
Prepare the components
The MAKE project lists 12 cans, 11 plastic bottle tops, four kabob skewers, super glue, a knife and scissors. Its template-based layout creates the body and cab from multiple cans; the bottle tops act as wheels or other details. LEDs can be added for nighttime appeal, but they are optional and should be enclosed so wiring and contacts cannot snag.
Cut and assemble safely
- Have an adult cut the cans and any template openings. Finish every cut edge by folding it inward, filing it smooth or covering it securely.
- Dry-fit the cans before gluing. Confirm that the body is straight, the cab sits squarely and the wheel positions are symmetrical.
- Glue the can sections and bottle tops with small amounts of super glue. Hold each joint steady, then leave the complete assembly undisturbed until fully cured.
- Use the four skewers as axles. Make the axle channels parallel and keep both ends at equal heights; a skewed axle will make a bottle-cap wheel bind.
- Fit the bottle tops only after checking that the skewer can turn freely. If a cap touches the body, add a small spacer or reposition the axle rather than forcing the wheel.
- Test-roll the truck on a level surface, then add paint, lettering or a lightweight load.
MAKE described its finished project as a repurposed gift with a fun appearance. That description is about presentation, not a tested load rating or child-safety certification.

How to attach wheels to a soda can
Drill or punch axle holes in opposite sides of the can, making each pair level and directly aligned. Slide a straight skewer or wooden dowel through the pair, mount a wheel on each end, and secure the wheels while preserving a small clearance from the can wall. Spin the axle by hand before gluing; if it catches, realign the holes or trim the spacer. Adhesive should hold the wheel to the axle or its hub, never fill the clearance needed for rotation.
Make the truck roll reliably
- It veers: one axle pair is not parallel; recheck hole height and body symmetry.
- A wheel stops: the cap or wooden wheel is rubbing the can or glue has entered the hub; remove the obstruction and allow a fresh joint to cure.
- The axle slips: add a secure retainer at the wheel, while keeping the wheel free to rotate.
- The body collapses: reinforce the inside with a second can section or light card, and keep loads decorative because no load-capacity test is established.
- Edges feel sharp: stop use and file, fold or cover them before handling again.
Decoration and display ideas
Use contrasting paint for the cab and cargo box, bottle-top headlights, a paper grille and hand-lettered side panels. Keep decorations lightweight and away from wheel paths. A battery-powered LED feature can make the multi-can truck visible at night, but protect the battery compartment and wiring from exposed metal and moisture.

What this project can—and cannot—promise
These are craft constructions, not certified children’s vehicles. The available descriptions provide no measured speed, load capacity, durability test or child-safety certification. Use the finished truck as a supervised display or gentle-play model, and retire it when aluminum, adhesive or wheel parts become damaged.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. The Bottom Line
For the simplest build, choose the one-can design and concentrate on four straight, aligned axle holes. Choose the 12-can MAKE-style truck when its larger semi-truck shape and bottle-cap details matter more than speed of construction. Whichever version you make, finish every aluminum edge, let adhesive cure and test wheel clearance before play.
