No monthly fee is generally required for basic Google Home speaker, display, or smart-home use. Google Home Premium is an optional subscription for advanced Nest camera and doorbell history, enhanced alerts, and certain Gemini-powered features; U.S. plans currently start at $10 per month.
What “Google Home” can mean
The name covers three separate things:
- Google Home app: the app used to set up devices and manage a home.
- Google Home and Nest hardware: speakers and displays such as Nest Mini, Nest Audio, Nest Hub, and Nest Hub Max, plus Nest cameras, doorbells, and thermostats.
- Google Home Premium: an optional paid service for eligible security, recording, and advanced AI features.
You need a Google account to set up and personalize the ecosystem. That account requirement is not the same as paying for Home Premium.
What works without Google Home Premium
For ordinary use, a speaker or display does not work like a cable box or cellular device that requires a recurring plan. With compatible hardware, Wi-Fi, internet access, and a Google account, you can generally:
- Ask basic questions and use voice-assistant functions.
- Set timers, alarms, reminders, and routines.
- Control compatible lights, plugs, thermostats, televisions, and streaming devices.
- Broadcast messages between compatible Home devices.
- Play supported music, podcasts, radio, and other media.
- Set up devices and manage a smart home in the Google Home app.
Media providers can charge separately. Spotify Premium, YouTube Music Premium, Apple Music, a streaming service, or another provider may limit ad-free playback or on-demand song selection to its own paid tier. Those charges are not Google Home fees. Your internet service is also a separate cost, and many central Home functions depend on Wi-Fi and cloud connectivity.

When Home Premium becomes useful
Google Home Premium matters most when you own compatible Nest cameras or doorbells, or when you want newer Gemini-powered Home capabilities. Google says availability depends on device, country, language, Wi-Fi, and internet connection.
Standard plan features
- 30 days of event-based video history.
- Intelligent alerts, including supported familiar-face, package, vehicle, garage-door, smoke-alarm, and carbon-monoxide-alarm detection.
- Gemini for Home features and Gemini Live on compatible speakers and displays.
- “Help me create” for describing home automations in natural language.
Advanced plan features
Advanced includes Standard benefits plus:
- 60 days of event-based video history.
- 24/7 video history for compatible cameras and wired doorbells, with up to 10 days of 24/7 history under Google’s listed plan details.
- Descriptive notifications, searchable video history, more detailed event descriptions, and daily event summaries.
For a speaker-only household, Premium is mainly an optional route to newer AI capabilities—not a prerequisite for timers, routines, questions, or ordinary smart-home control. For camera owners, the subscription can determine whether you have stored event history, advanced detection, searchable recordings, or 24/7 history. Live viewing and basic operation may remain available without the plan, but capabilities vary by model and feature.

These are Google’s listed U.S. prices and can change with taxes, promotions, market, or account. Annual billing saves $20 on Standard and $40 on Advanced compared with 12 monthly payments. Advanced costs $240 over 12 monthly payments versus $200 annually.

Nest Aware was renamed
As of October 1, 2025, Google renamed second-generation Nest Aware as Google Home Premium. Existing second-generation subscribers had their plan name changed. Older pages may show first-generation or previous-generation Nest Aware names and prices, so check the plan displayed in your Google account or on the current Google Store page. The rename does not mean every historical Nest Aware plan has identical terms.
Google describes Premium as a whole-home subscription for eligible Nest devices, rather than a separate monthly charge for each camera. “Whole home” should not be read as unlimited coverage across unrelated homes, properties, or accounts; confirm Google’s current home-structure rules if you manage multiple addresses. Google AI Pro and AI Ultra bundles
Home Premium can also arrive as a benefit of a separate Google subscription:

Google lists AI Pro at $19.99 per month on its U.S. plan page. AI Ultra pricing is presented as a “from” price and can vary by offer or market, so check Google One’s plan page and AI plan comparison. AI Pro does not make Google Home universally free: it is a separate paid subscription that happens to include Standard. Buying it solely for camera history may cost more than purchasing Home Premium directly.

What happens if you cancel?
- Cancellation stops the next renewal; access normally continues through the already-paid period.
- When that period ends, subscription-only history, enhanced alerts, and advanced AI benefits can end.
- Basic device operation and some live functions may continue, depending on the device and feature.
- Review or export anything important before the paid period ends, and check the current cancellation and data-retention terms for your account. Google’s materials do not establish one universal post-cancellation retention period for every recording.
Google says subscriptions auto-renew unless canceled and require a valid payment method. Promotional trials vary by device, account, country, and offer. The current store terms describe some one-month Advanced trials for eligible Standard subscribers, limited to one trial per home at a time, with automatic renewal unless canceled; returns, partial periods, and refunds can have additional conditions.
Which users should pay?
Usually skip Premium
- You own only a speaker or display.
- You need basic commands, routines, media playback, or smart-home control.
- You do not need cloud video history, advanced alerts, or Gemini Live.
Standard may fit
- You have compatible cameras or doorbells and want event recordings for up to 30 days.
- You want intelligent package, face, vehicle, or alarm alerts supported by your devices.
- You want Gemini-powered Home features and do not already receive Standard through AI Pro.
Advanced may fit
- You regularly search recordings or need longer event history.
- You need compatible 24/7 history, detailed notifications, and daily summaries.
- You have wired cameras or doorbells that support the listed 24/7 features.

Check before subscribing
- Confirm your camera, doorbell, speaker, or display is compatible with the feature you want.
- Check whether your Google account already receives Premium through AI Pro or AI Ultra.
- Compare annual and monthly totals, including taxes and any promotion.
- Verify regional and language availability.
- If you have multiple homes, confirm which devices and home structures the subscription covers.
- Do not confuse Home Premium with internet, music, streaming, or professional-monitoring charges.
The Bottom Line
Google Home devices do not generally require a monthly fee for core use. Pay for Google Home Premium only when compatible camera history, advanced security alerts, 24/7 recording, or premium Gemini features justify the recurring cost—and check for an existing AI bundle before purchasing it separately.
