It is designed for production, assembly, logistics and other prolonged-standing work—not as a replacement for a normal chair, stool or office seat.
What Chairless Chair 2.0 is—and is not
The device is a wearable ergonomic mechanical system. A waistcoat or hip-belt assembly connects to thigh straps and footwear attachments. Mechanical legs and seat pads support part of the user’s load when the wearer adopts the supported posture, then disengage for ordinary walking and standing.
It is passive: Carl Stahl’s documentation says it needs no battery or external power supply. That makes it fundamentally different from a powered exoskeleton that uses motors, actuators or rechargeable batteries to assist movement.
The operating manual defines it for use on production and assembly lines. A construction company should therefore evaluate each proposed task and workstation rather than assume that every site activity is suitable.

What improved in version 2.0
European Commission CORDIS reporting describes the current model as effectively the third product generation, refined with automotive manufacturers. The reported changes are practical rather than cosmetic:
- More than 25% less weight than the earlier generation.
- A wider height adjustment range: from 1.5 metres on the earlier version to 2 metres.
- A slimmer design intended to interfere less with work movements.
- Better breathability, seat-pad comfort and abrasion resistance according to the manufacturer.
The result is a more usable wearable support system for jobs where workers repeatedly need to change position instead of remaining at a fixed seat.
Can you walk, stand and sit while wearing it?
Standing and walking
Yes. The support structure is designed to disengage when the user stands or walks, so the wearer can move between tasks without removing the device.
Supported semi-seated work
When the wearer bends into the supported posture, the seat surfaces and mechanical legs transfer load through the belt, thigh and footwear connections. This is a supported semi-seated position, not the same as sitting in a chair.
Stairs, kneeling and low-level work
Current guidance excludes climbing stairs and classic kneeling. Picking an object from the floor can be trained for suitable applications, but that should be assessed during implementation rather than assumed to be unrestricted.

Specifications, fit and training requirements
| Item | Current guidance |
|---|---|
| Total weight | Approximately 3 kg |
| Power | No battery or power supply; purely mechanical |
| User height | Approximately 1.50–2.00 m |
| Maximum load | 120 kg |
| Wear time | Putting it on generally takes up to 30 seconds; removal takes just under 10 seconds after the procedure is learned |
| Work-shoe connection | Click-sliders attach to compatible footwear; non-slip rubber feet contact the floor in the supported posture |
| Training | Implementation training is required to optimize use and determine suitable tasks |
Fit matters because the load path depends on correct adjustment of the waist or hip belt, thigh straps, footwear attachments and seat position. The stated height and load limits are boundaries, not recommendations to exceed them.
Where the concept fits a construction operation
The strongest match is a task with prolonged standing, frequent short walks and repeated work at a consistent height—for example, a production, prefabrication, inspection or staging station. The device can let a worker obtain support without parking a stool in the work area.
It is less suitable where the job requires frequent ladder or stair use, kneeling, crawling, unrestricted climbing or rapid changes in floor level. A trial should examine those movements, footwear, floor conditions, clearance around tools and whether the supported posture actually aligns with the work.
Because the manual explicitly says the device is not a substitute for a chair or stool, it should not be issued as an office chair or treated as a general seating solution.
Chairless Chair 2.0 compared with other standing aids
| Comparison point | Chairless Chair 2.0 | Stool or standing aid | Powered exoskeleton |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mobility between tasks | Designed to remain worn while walking and standing | Usually must be moved, left behind or repositioned | Depends on the powered system and its operating rules |
| Power and maintenance | Passive mechanical operation; no battery charging | Simple mechanical equipment | Battery, controls and powered-system maintenance may apply |
| Movement limits | Stairs and classic kneeling are excluded by current guidance | Depends on whether the aid is carried or moved | System-specific; verify movement restrictions |
| Fit | 1.50–2.00 m user height and 120 kg maximum load | Product-specific | Product-specific |
| Implementation | Workplace fitting and user training are required | Usually simpler to deploy | Typically requires system-specific training |
| Procurement | Consultative purchase with a paid workplace test | Often ordinary equipment procurement | Usually consultative and task-specific |
Cost and the required trial
Carl Stahl’s US listing shows $2,668.31 for Chairless Chair USA 2.0. The listing also says the exoskeleton cannot be purchased without a prior chargeable test phase lasting one to two weeks.

- One Seat for Every Version of Your Day: Sidelines, job sites, concerts, gardening, waiting in line — wherever you'd be standing, you're already sitting. Backed by a lifetime warranty, you can't beat it.
The test is part of the deployment process: the supplier fits the unit, explains operation and evaluates the workstation before the buyer decides whether to purchase. Treat the displayed amount as the US listing price; availability, taxes, shipping and pricing in other countries require confirmation with Carl Stahl or an authorized industrial distributor.
Shared use, cleaning and replacement parts
An additional-user kit is listed for shared units. It includes textile components such as a vest, hip belt, adapters, belt extension and shoulder pads, along with left and right clickers. Textile parts can be machine-washed at 30 °C. The manufacturer classifies textile and rubber components as wearing parts, so a shared-use program should include inspection and replacement planning.
What the evidence does—and does not—show
Manufacturer pages and the operating manual establish the device’s specifications, intended use, limits and procurement process. CORDIS documents the development work and customer feedback behind the refinement. Those sources do not establish a universal reduction in injuries or a guaranteed productivity gain for every workplace.
The responsible way to evaluate it is therefore task by task: define the standing exposure, identify required movements, fit trained users, run the paid trial and record whether the support improves the actual workflow without introducing new restrictions.
