The most defensible way to build a lower-exposure kitchen in 2026 is to choose clearly disclosed materials: uncoated stainless steel, cast iron, carbon steel, glass, hard maple and food-grade silicone. Treat “non-toxic” as shopping shorthand, not a guarantee. Check the coating, food-contact use, lead information and care limits for every product.
The 15 picks below address cookware, storage, prep, serving and food safety while avoiding unsupported claims about specific brands or models.

Cookware and bakeware
1. PFAS-free stainless-steel cookware set or skillet
Uncoated stainless steel is a straightforward alternative to an undisclosed “nonstick” surface. Consumer Reports cautions that a pan labeled only nonstick may contain PFAS when the coating is not identified, while the FDA explains that some PFAS are authorized in polymerized nonstick coatings. Choose a listing that names the cooking surface rather than relying on a vague safety label.
2. Cast-iron skillet or Dutch oven
Cast iron has no synthetic nonstick coating. Its seasoning forms a cooking surface that can become more release-friendly with use. Buy a piece you can keep clean and dry, and follow the manufacturer’s seasoning and care directions.

3. Carbon-steel frying pan
Carbon steel is another uncoated option for frying, sautéing and high-heat cooking. It needs seasoning and careful drying to limit rust, so it suits cooks willing to maintain the surface rather than seeking a maintenance-free pan.
4. PFAS-free ceramic-coated skillet
Ceramic nonstick can provide easy release without the same PFAS-coating concern, but the claim must be explicit. “PFOA-free” alone is not proof that a product is PFAS-free. Respect the pan’s heat, utensil and cleaning limits, and stop using it if the coating is scratched, flaking or otherwise damaged.
5. Glass baking dish
Uncoated glass avoids a polymer cooking coating and works well for casseroles, roasting and baking. Thermal shock can break glass, so use only the temperature changes and preheating method allowed by the manufacturer.

Storage and food preparation
6. Reusable glass food-storage container set
Glass or stainless steel can replace many plastic storage containers. Consumer Reports advises against heating food in plastic because heat increases leaching potential. If a container has a plastic lid or seal, keep those parts below their stated temperature limit and do not assume the glass rating applies to the lid.

7. Reusable silicone storage bags
Food-grade silicone bags are a reusable alternative to single-use zip-top plastic bags and are commonly designed for freezer and dishwasher use. Confirm that the bag is intended for food contact and check its maximum temperature before using it with hot food, boiling water or an oven.
8. Single-piece hard-maple cutting board
A board made from one piece of hard, close-grained wood is a durable choice for everyday prep. The FDA Food Code 2026 states that “hard maple or an equivalently hard, close-grained wood may be used for” cutting boards and specified utensils. Keep a separate board for raw meat and ready-to-eat foods, wash promptly with hot soapy water and replace a board that develops deep, hard-to-clean grooves.

9. Stainless-steel cooking utensil set
Stainless steel is a durable alternative to plastic spatulas, tongs and ladles. Select pieces whose handles, welds and any nonmetal components are identified as suitable for food contact, and match them to your cookware to avoid unnecessary scratching.
10. Food-grade silicone spatula set
Food-grade or medical-grade silicone is useful for scraping bowls and working in pans where a softer edge is preferred. The material name alone is not enough: verify food-contact wording and the product’s heat rating, particularly for spatulas used near burners.

12. Lead-free ceramic dinnerware from a reputable manufacturer
Ceramic dinnerware can be appropriate when the glaze and lead information are trustworthy. The FDA regulates lead in foodware and warns about risks from some imported products, so avoid pieces with unclear origin, glaze or food-contact documentation.

13. PFAS-free parchment paper
Parchment can reduce reliance on disposable foil for baking, but the package should state that it is PFAS-free. Do not infer that status from “nonstick,” “natural” or “unbleached” wording alone, and follow the stated oven-temperature limit.
14. Glass or stainless-steel French press or Chemex-style coffee maker
A glass or stainless-steel French press or Chemex-style design keeps the main brewing vessel free of plastic. Check the complete assembly, including lid, filter holder and seals, because a plastic component may still be present even when the carafe is glass or steel.

How to screen a “non-toxic” kitchen listing
Read the coating language
“PFOA-free” addresses one compound; it does not establish that every PFAS is absent. Prefer an uncoated surface or an explicit PFAS-free statement that identifies the relevant food-contact surface. If a listing says only “nonstick,” ask what the coating is made of.
Confirm food-contact and lead information
Do not buy cookware or dinnerware with an unclear alloy, glaze or intended use. FDA warnings include certain imported aluminum, brass and related alloy cookware that can leach lead and should not be distributed in the United States.
Check heat and care limits
- Do not heat food in plastic.
- Do not preheat an empty nonstick pan over high heat.
- Retire nonstick cookware that is scratched, flaking or damaged.
- Use glass, silicone and plastic components only within their stated temperature ranges.
Favor durable items, but replace unsafe ones
Glass, stainless steel, cast iron and hardwood can reduce dependence on disposable plastic, but durability does not make an item permanent. Replace anything cracked, badly worn, contaminated or impossible to clean adequately.

- Wash boards, utensils and containers with hot, soapy water after use.
- Keep separate cutting boards for raw meat and ready-to-eat foods.
- Prevent cross-contamination by cleaning thermometer probes between foods.
- Follow the care instructions for seasoning, dishwasher use, seals and coatings instead of treating every product in a category the same way.
The Bottom Line
For the lowest-regret choices, start with clearly disclosed uncoated stainless steel, cast iron, carbon steel and glass; add food-grade silicone, hard maple and verified lead- or PFAS-free products where they solve a specific kitchen task.
