The current US white BILLY is 15 3/4 inches wide, 11 inches deep and 79 1/2 inches high, with particleboard and paper-foil main parts, plastic-edged sides and a fiberboard back. IKEA’s listing showed $59 when checked; price, stock, colors and accessory compatibility can change. Every version still needs the supplied anti-tip fastener and a fixing method suited to your wall.
What the current BILLY gives you
BILLY launched in 1979 and is available in multiple heights and widths. Shelves can be repositioned, and the system can grow with additional cases, extension units and shelves. The back uses snap fittings, which makes legitimate assembly and disassembly easier. Those features make it a useful modular starting point, but they do not turn the particleboard case into structural cabinetry.
- Base size used in these examples: 15 3/4 W × 11 D × 79 1/2 H inches (current US white model).
- Storage flexibility: adjustable shelves, multiple case widths and optional extension units.
- Material reality: particleboard and paper foil, plastic edging and a fiberboard back; plan trim, paint and fasteners accordingly.
- Non-negotiable: attach each case or planned group to the wall with the enclosed device, using hardware appropriate for the wall material.

The 15 BILLY transformations
1. Flank a window to make a reading nook
Place BILLY cases on both sides of a window, keep the opening clear, and bridge the composition visually with a seat cushion and pillows. The cases provide book storage while the center becomes a defined perch. Join neighboring cases before installing trim, then anchor the arrangement so a child or adult leaning on the seat cannot tip a unit.
2. Build a faux pantry and sideboard
The 11-inch depth fits dishware, dry goods and small appliances where a full-depth cabinet would block circulation. Use the adjustable shelves for plates and containers, and reserve the lower zone for heavier items. Keep appliance cords and ventilation clear; the BILLY case is storage furniture, not a rated kitchen cabinet.

3. Color-drench a built-in wall
Group several cases, fill the seams, and paint the bookcases and surrounding wall the same color. The continuous color makes separate boxes read as one built-in plane without cutting the cases. Assemble and square every unit first, complete the backing, then do surface preparation and paint.
4. Make a counter-height entry organizer
Start with a shorter BILLY, cut away the lower apron, and add tapered legs to raise the working surface. Finish it with wall hooks and a mirror for a compact drop zone. Cutting the factory parts and carrying loads on added legs makes this a higher-skill build; test the leg layout and still use the wall fastener.
5. Create a budget entertainment console
Arrange BILLY units around a television and use closed storage in the lower run for controllers, cables and games. Leave the screen, outlets and ventilation accessible. Anchor the cases individually or as a joined bank rather than relying on the TV or a countertop to stabilize them.
6. Add wavy MDF fronts to office storage
Nail shaped MDF fronts to the case faces, caulk the joints, and hang a curtain behind or in front of the openings when you want paperwork hidden. The MDF changes the visual surface but does not increase the case’s tested capacity. Use appropriate brads, keep fasteners away from shelf-pin holes, and allow caulk and paint to cure before loading.
7. Frame a fireplace or TV with scallop trim
Paint the grouped units, then add scalloped trim and replacement hardware to create a softer fireplace or television surround. Keep decorative material clear of heat sources and electrical access. The trim is cosmetic: secure the BILLY cases first, then attach the scallop pieces to the finished assembly.
8. Build a five-unit home library wall
Remove the baseboards behind the run, combine five cases—including a narrower middle unit—and paint the wall emerald green or another saturated color. Removing baseboards lets the cases sit closer to the wall, but it does not replace anchoring. Screw adjacent cases together and treat the entire bank as one planned installation.

9. Turn a case into a pole-wrap cabinet
Cover the fronts with pole-wrap material, then add doors and pulls for hidden storage. This approach gives a textured, furniture-like face while preserving adjustable shelving inside. Measure door overlays carefully around the factory edges; added panels and hinges increase the need for solid wall attachment.
10. Make a long, sideways TV console
Turn two tall narrow BILLYs onto their sides to form a long base and use another unit to create open shelving above or beside it. This is a high-risk reorientation: the case was designed to stand vertically, so provide a continuous, rigid support, join the pieces, and anchor the finished structure before placing equipment on it. Do not assume the original upright arrangement’s behavior applies sideways.

11. Build entryway cubbies with hooks
Use four standard units, remove the middle shelf where an open cubby is wanted, and create a 4.5-inch base from baseboard pieces. Add hooks, fasten into studs where possible, drive screws through existing pin holes, and caulk the visible gaps. This produces a practical drop zone, but the hooks must be fixed to framing or suitable anchors—not only to the thin back panel.
12. Make rustic floating-style shelves
Join single- and double-width cases, add a 1/8-inch backer, and clad the fronts and tops with pine boards. Whitewash the wood for a rustic finish, then mount the assembly with steel L-brackets fixed to studs. The brackets carry the mounting load; the decorative pine and BILLY back do not substitute for stud connections.
13. Add BILLY/OXBERG glass or panel doors
OXBERG doors convert open shelves into a display cabinet: glass protects contents from dust, while panel versions conceal clutter. IKEA documents adjustable hinges, which help align multiple doors after installation. Door style and compatibility vary by current range, so verify the exact BILLY and OXBERG versions before ordering; anchor the case before fitting doors.
14. Refresh an existing unit with paint and hardware
Give an older BILLY a new office or living-room role with a properly prepared repaint, then add doors, trim and pulls. Degrease and lightly abrade the paper-foil surfaces, use a primer intended for slick laminate-like finishes, and let each coat cure before reinstalling shelves. New hardware changes appearance and access, not the underlying particleboard construction.

15. Plan a wall-to-wall modular library
Mix BILLY widths and extension units to fill a wall, screw neighboring cases together, and finish the top with trim or crown. Lay out the full run around outlets, windows and ceiling height before cutting any molding. Anchor the completed assembly as one coordinated installation, with wall fixings placed at appropriate studs or anchors throughout the run.

Anchor for the actual wall
IKEA requires the furniture to be attached with the enclosed wall fastener, and the fixing device must suit your wall material. Locate studs where possible; for masonry, plasterboard or other substrates, select an anchor rated for that substrate and follow its installation instructions. A grouped or modified BILLY still needs anti-tip protection.
Square the cases before cosmetic work
Assemble each case square, install the complete back, and only then paint, caulk or add trim. For a bank of units, screw the side panels together so the faces stay aligned. Jessica D’Itri Marés of Renovate 108 summarizes the fastening principle: “Follow the directions and use all of the nails — even add a few more if you want.” She also recommends screwing side-by-side cases together and securing the bookcase to the ceiling where appropriate.
Know when the risk level changes
Cutting a case, carrying loads on added legs, mounting it away from the floor, or turning a tall unit sideways changes the original risk profile. Those projects deserve accurate measuring, rigid support and experienced tool use. There are no independent load tests or statistically valid durability studies for these modified configurations, so do not assign a maximum load beyond the exact IKEA configuration documentation.
Use the right finish and hardware
Paint, trim, screws, hooks, brackets, doors, pulls and caulk recur across the documented projects. Choose fasteners for the material they enter, keep screws clear of wiring and plumbing, and seal visible seams only after the assembly is mechanically secure. Because dimensions, prices, colors and accessory compatibility change, confirm the current IKEA listing before buying parts.
