Usually, no. A typical 5 W, 10 W, 20 W or 40 W blue-diode engraver can cut wood and other organic materials, and it can mark some coated metals. It generally cannot make a reliable through-cut in ordinary steel, stainless steel, aluminum, copper, brass or galvanized sheet. Metal cutting requires a different process—most often a suitably powered fiber laser, plasma cutter, CNC machine, waterjet or a job shop.
The crucial distinction is between marking, engraving and cutting: changing a coating is not the same as removing metal, and a groove that can be snapped by hand is not necessarily a controlled through-cut.
What “diode laser” means
The label covers several very different systems. LightBurn’s overview distinguishes blue diodes, near-infrared diodes and fiber lasers: Laser Types.
| Technology | Typical wavelength and use | Bare-metal cutting? |
|---|---|---|
| Blue diode | Approximately 400–500 nm (often about 455 nm); hobby cutting of wood, leather, paper and some plastics | Generally no |
| Near-infrared diode | Commonly 1064 nm; metal marking and engraving | Usually no |
| Fiber laser | Roughly 1,030–1,070 nm; metal marking, engraving, welding and cutting | Yes, at suitable power, optics and assist gas |
| Industrial direct-diode or diode-pumped systems | High-power industrial heating, cladding, welding and cutting | Yes, but these are not consumer engravers |
A product called a “diode laser cutter” may only be a cutter for nonmetals. Wavelength matters, but so do optical power, beam quality, spot size, focus, material grade and thickness, speed, assist gas and machine rigidity.

Marking, engraving and cutting are different jobs
- Marking: changes color or appearance, often without meaningful material removal.
- Engraving: removes material and leaves a measurable depression.
- Cutting: creates a continuous kerf through the workpiece so it separates.
Removing black paint from a steel panel is coating removal. A white mark on anodized aluminum is a change to the anodized layer. Neither proves that the underlying metal was engraved or cut.
What a blue hobby diode can do to metal
Anodized aluminum
Anodized aluminum is often a good marking target because the beam changes or removes the anodized surface while leaving most of the aluminum intact. It is not the same as cutting aluminum sheet.
Painted, powder-coated or lacquered metal
A blue diode can often remove a dark or colored coating to reveal the substrate. Results depend on coating chemistry, thickness and focus; treat the result as a coating mark unless you can verify measurable metal removal.
Stainless steel
Some stainless products can be darkened or marked with a suitable marking compound. The compound or surface reaction is doing much of the absorption work. This is generally shallow marking, not through-cutting.

Raw reflective metals
Unoxidized aluminum, copper, brass, chrome and mirror-finish stainless are poor targets for an open-frame blue diode. Reflected energy can return toward the optics. Manufacturer guidance warns against these materials: xTool’s safety guide and xTool M2 safety instructions.
Galvanized steel
Heating zinc-coated steel can create hazardous fumes. Do not experiment casually; use a documented material-safety review, suitable extraction and equipment approved for the process.
Thin foil
Specialized demonstrations may involve extremely thin, darkened or pre-coated foil, a sacrificial backing, many passes or a different laser source. The result may be ablation, tearing or heat damage rather than a clean, dimensionally accurate cut. Verify the exact material and machine conditions; do not generalize foil results to sheet metal.
Can 5 W, 10 W, 20 W or 40 W cut metal?
| Blue-diode class | Practical expectation |
|---|---|
| 5 W | No practical bare-metal cutting. Suitable for organics and some coated-metal marking. |
| 10 W | The same fundamental bare-metal limitation; extra power mainly improves organic-material cutting. |
| 20 W | Useful additional capacity for wood, acrylic and leather, but not a normal sheet-metal cutter. |
| 40 W | Still not a practical bare-metal sheet cutter in the usual hobby configuration. |
Check whether a stated wattage is optical output or the machine’s electrical input. A higher number does not by itself provide the power density, focus control, assist gas and rigidity needed to sustain a metal-cutting kerf.

Why bare metal resists a blue diode
- Reflectivity: polished aluminum, copper, brass, chrome and mirror stainless can reflect much of the incident blue light.
- Thermal conductivity: aluminum and copper spread heat away from the focal spot quickly.
- Power density and focal region: a small spot may discolor a surface but cannot maintain melt-and-eject conditions through a sheet.
- Heat sinking: the workpiece carries heat away before the local temperature remains high enough.
- Kerf evacuation: industrial cutters use controlled assist gas, precision focus and rigid mechanics; hobby air assist is not equivalent.
These factors interact. Wavelength alone does not determine cutting ability.
Does a 1064 nm infrared diode cut metal?
Consumer 1064 nm modules are generally sold for metal marking or engraving. xTool describes its module as an engraving source in its 1064-nm FAQ, and LightBurn describes near-infrared diode systems as mainly suited to engraving some metals. A 2 W or 5 W IR marker is not equivalent to a kilowatt-class fiber cutter.
What actually cuts metal?
Fiber laser
Fiber systems are the usual choice for repeatable sheet-metal parts, including steel, stainless and aluminum. Industrial machines commonly use kilowatt-scale sources, enclosed Class 4 beam paths, assist gas, cooling and substantial extraction. Boss Laser says its FC series starts at about $45,000 for an entry 2 kW machine and can exceed six figures as power, bed size and automation increase: metal-cutting cost guide.
Plasma cutter
Plasma is often less expensive for thicker steel and faster for rough fabrication. Expect a wider kerf, a heat-affected zone and more dross than with a fine fiber cut.

CNC router
A CNC router can machine aluminum, brass and other suitable sheet materials with the correct cutter, feeds, speeds, workholding and chip control. It produces chips and tool wear rather than a laser kerf.
Waterjet
Waterjet suits thick, heat-sensitive or difficult alloys and mixed materials, but requires abrasive handling, water infrastructure and higher operating cost.
Outsourcing
For occasional brackets, signs or prototypes, a job shop can be cheaper than buying a cutter and providing ventilation, gas, cooling, maintenance, training and safety controls.

A practical buying decision
- Cutting wood, acrylic, leather, paper or cardboard: a blue diode may be appropriate.
- Logos on anodized aluminum or painted steel: a blue diode may be sufficient.
- Deep metal engraving or industrial marking: consider an IR or fiber marking laser.
- Repeated, accurate thin-sheet cutting: use a fiber cutter or outsource.
- Thick steel and rough structural parts: compare plasma, CNC, waterjet and outsourcing.
- One compact machine for organics and metal: verify which laser performs each operation; a dual-laser enclosure does not make the blue source a metal cutter.
How to test a claim without fooling yourself
- Identify the exact substrate, alloy, thickness and coating.
- Read the machine manual and prohibited-material list.
- Confirm wavelength and optical output, not just electrical input.
- Avoid shiny, mirror-like bare metal unless the manufacturer specifically approves it.
- For marking, use the manufacturer-recommended compound.
- Run a small power/speed matrix on approved scrap.
- Inspect whether the result is coating removal, discoloration, shallow engraving or a genuine through-cut.
- Stop for unexpected reflection, arcing, smoke, overheating or optical damage.
There is no universal metal-cutting setting. Focus, spot size, speed, passes, air assist, material condition and module health all change the result. xTool notes that a weakened laser module may stop cutting materials it previously handled: troubleshooting guide.
Safety that cannot be improvised
- Class 4 direct or reflected beams can cause immediate eye and skin injury and can ignite materials. FDA information is available in its laser FAQ and laser-products guidance.
- Never casually test polished aluminum, copper, brass, chrome or mirror stainless in an open-frame machine.
- Do not cut PVC, vinyl, unknown plastics or unknown coatings. Use material safety data and appropriate extraction for paints and galvanized coatings.
- Never leave a running machine unattended. Use the approved enclosure, ventilation and air assist, remove combustible debris and keep a suitable extinguisher accessible.
- An enclosure alone does not automatically make a modified machine Class 1; interlocks, labeling, containment and operating procedures matter.
- Industrial fiber systems require controlled areas, trained operators, hazard assessment and, where applicable, a Laser Safety Officer. OSHA’s guidance is at Guidelines for Laser Safety and Hazard Assessment.
How to read “it cuts metal” demonstrations
- Confirm that the workpiece—not merely its coating—is metal being removed.
- Check whether it is foil, pre-blackened stock or a marking compound.
- Identify whether the source is blue diode, IR, fiber or an industrial diode system.
- Look for thickness, passes, air assist, edge quality and dimensional accuracy.
- Distinguish a scored groove that snaps from a controlled through-cut.
- Do not confuse electrical input wattage with optical output.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a 20 W blue diode cut stainless steel?
Not reliably in ordinary sheet form. It may mark a coating or stainless surface with suitable treatment, but a genuine through-cut normally requires a fiber cutter or another metal-cutting process.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Can a diode engrave aluminum?
It can often mark anodized or coated aluminum by changing the surface layer. Bare, shiny aluminum is reflective and is not a normal open-frame blue-diode target.
Can black paint make a diode cut steel?
A dark coating can improve absorption for marking, but it does not supply the energy needed to melt through steel.
What is the cheapest route for occasional metal parts?
Outsourcing is often the rational choice because you avoid the cutter, extraction, assist gas, cooling, maintenance, training and safety infrastructure.
