IKEA says the SYMFONISK range was discontinued beginning in January 2026; remaining stock is being sold until exhausted. Consider one if you find a working unit well below the price of a current Sonos alternative, especially for background music or as part of a system you already own. For a new system that needs dependable replacements and a growing product line, look elsewhere.
What the SYMFONISK Bookshelf Speaker is
SYMFONISK is a collaboration between IKEA and Sonos. The powered Bookshelf Speaker connects over Wi-Fi and joins the Sonos Home Sound System; it is not a conventional Bluetooth speaker. IKEA directs owners to use the Sonos app for setup and management. IKEA’s SYMFONISK guide explains the partnership and product family.

The unit can sit horizontally or vertically, go on a shelf, or be wall-mounted with the appropriate hardware. Its furniture-friendly shape can be useful where a conventional speaker would look out of place. It was also designed to serve as a small shelf when mounted, but check the manual for the exact model and mounting arrangement before placing anything on it. IKEA’s original launch material specified a load limit of about 6.6 lb with the included bracket; do not assume that limit applies to every generation or installation. The original U.S. launch price was $99, a historical 2019 price rather than a current benchmark. IKEA’s launch material documents that price.
Do not infer a built-in voice assistant from the Wi-Fi connection. Treat the Bookshelf Speaker as a networked audio endpoint controlled through Sonos and supported streaming protocols, not as an Echo- or HomePod-style voice speaker.

How it works for whole-home audio
After setup, each speaker appears as a room in the Sonos app. You can play different content in separate rooms, or group rooms for synchronized playback, with volume adjusted per room or across the group. IKEA describes both independent and grouped playback in its SYMFONISK use guide.
This room-by-room approach avoids running speaker wire through walls or buying an amplifier and passive speakers for every space. You can start with one room and expand later. The trade-off is dependence on reliable Wi-Fi and the Sonos app/account infrastructure: weak coverage or a congested network can disrupt discovery, grouping, or playback.
- Background music: A strong fit for bedrooms, kitchens, offices, hallways, and other spaces where convenient listening matters more than reference-quality sound.
- Focused music listening: One speaker is a compact solution; two compatible speakers in a stereo pair provide left-right separation and a wider presentation.
- Home theater: Two compatible Bookshelf Speakers can serve as rear surrounds, but only as part of a compatible Sonos home-theater setup. They do not replace a soundbar or receiver.
The product supports Apple AirPlay 2 and Spotify Connect, according to the IKEA SYMFONISK product information. AirPlay is useful for sending audio from compatible Apple devices, and Spotify Connect hands playback to the speaker. Neither makes the speaker portable or guarantees that every app or TV source behaves like a Sonos-app source; room management and Sonos system features remain in the Sonos app.
Set it up and test it before expanding
- Choose a location. Start where the speaker will have reliable Wi-Fi and access to a power outlet. Avoid committing to a distant room until you have confirmed coverage.
- Connect power. Plug in the speaker and allow it to start.
- Install the Sonos app. Use the current app on an iOS or Android device.
- Add the product. Open the app and select the option to add or set up a product, then follow its account and Wi-Fi prompts. IKEA’s setup guide describes this in-app process.
- Name the room. Assign a recognizable room name so playback and grouping are clear when you add more speakers.
- Add services and test playback. Add streaming services in the Sonos app if desired, then test playback in that room and with another room if you have one.
- Use room tuning if available. Run Trueplay only if the app and your system support it for this speaker and device.
A successful setup leaves the speaker visible as a named room in the Sonos app. Supported music services can play directly to it, so your phone does not need to remain the audio source.

- Confirm your phone is on the same intended Wi-Fi network as the speaker, not a guest network or a different SSID.
- Temporarily move the speaker closer to the router and try again.
- Restart the speaker and router, then check the app again.
- If the model and network arrangement allow it, try a temporary Ethernet connection to the router.
- Consult Sonos SYMFONISK support and IKEA’s troubleshooting guide before factory-resetting a unit.
Choose between one speaker, a stereo pair, and several rooms
One speaker in one room
One unit is the simplest, least expensive entry point: it provides app-controlled music in one room without a wired speaker installation. It is best suited to background listening rather than buyers seeking powerful bass or a broad listening area from a single compact speaker.
Two speakers as a stereo pair
A stereo pair improves left-right separation and can make music more convincing in a living room, office, or bedroom. It also doubles the cost and power outlets, requires sensible placement around the listening position, and ties up two speakers that could otherwise serve separate rooms. If one unit fails or becomes hard to replace, maintaining the matched pair can become difficult.

Use two compatible speakers—normally two identical Bookshelf Speakers—and confirm generation compatibility. IKEA’s documented app path is Room settings, select one SYMFONISK speaker, then Create Stereo Pair and follow the left/right prompts. Sonos’ compatibility article specifically lists the SYMFONISK Bookshelf (Gen 2) as eligible; do not assume every SYMFONISK product or generation can pair with every other one. See Sonos’ stereo-pair compatibility guidance.
Several independent rooms or a grouped whole-home setup
Multiple speakers can give each room its own playback, or rooms can be grouped when you want the same music synchronized throughout the home. Test Wi-Fi in each intended location before buying several units: a speaker at the edge of coverage can undermine the convenience of the whole arrangement.
Rear surrounds in a Sonos theater
Two compatible Bookshelf Speakers can act as rear surround speakers when bonded to a compatible Sonos home-theater product. They are not standalone TV surrounds, and the soundbar or other theater component is a significant part of the total cost. Use matching speakers for a normal surround pair and check compatibility for the specific products involved. Sonos’ SYMFONISK overview describes home-theater use.
Plan the placement, mount, and power cable
The speaker’s shelf-like form can reduce visual clutter, but its placement still needs to work acoustically and practically. IKEA designed it for horizontal or vertical placement, shelf use, and wall mounting. Use the correct mounting hardware and verify load limits for your exact unit; the original launch material’s approximately 6.6 lb figure applies to the included bracket described there, not automatically to every mounting configuration.
A floor stand may help when wall mounting is undesirable or when positioning rear surrounds. IKEA’s U.S. listing showed the SYMFONISK Bookshelf Speaker Floor Stand at $40 and marked “Last chance” at the time covered by the product information; availability and price can change. Check the stand listing before planning around it. Also confirm that a used speaker includes its power cable and any required mounting hardware.

IKEA says the SYMFONISK range was discontinued beginning in January 2026, with remaining inventory sold until exhausted. IKEA also says existing products are expected to continue working and receive support, but no new SYMFONISK products will be co-developed. That does not mean existing speakers stop working when the range ends. It does mean replacement units, accessories, and future feature support are less certain. IKEA’s U.S. SYMFONISK category currently represents residual availability: it lists picture-frame speakers and accessories rather than the Bookshelf Speaker itself. Local clearance inventory and used listings can differ. Check the U.S. category for current stock instead of assuming the bookshelf model is normally available.
Generation matters. Sonos lists the Bookshelf Speaker Gen 2 as compatible with its current app in its app compatibility guidance, while Gen 1 appears in its legacy-product documentation. Legacy status does not itself mean unusable, but it can imply a different future feature and support path. Identify the exact generation from the unit label, product number, packaging, or app rather than appearance alone. IKEA’s support statement is not a promise of indefinite updates or a specified support end date.
How much should you pay?
Use the price of current alternatives on the day you shop, not the original $99 launch price. The right comparison is the total cost of the intended setup—including multiple speakers, stands, brackets, cables, and any Sonos soundbar for surround use.
- Good candidate: A reputable clearance or used unit priced meaningfully below a current Sonos alternative, particularly if it fills a room in an existing Sonos system.
- Consider carefully: A unit only modestly cheaper than a current model. The savings need to justify discontinued status and potentially harder replacement.
- Walk away: A scarcity-driven price near or above a current Sonos speaker, or a listing that does not establish generation, condition, reset status, or included accessories.
Sonos Era 100 is a natural current Sonos comparison for a general-purpose compact speaker; check its live price and configuration at Sonos’ U.S. store. SYMFONISK may be the better value when deeply discounted and its furniture-friendly form is useful, but there is no sound basis for treating its old launch price as today’s fair market value.

SYMFONISK or another whole-home approach?
| Option | Multiroom approach | Portability | Home-theater role | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SYMFONISK Bookshelf Speaker | Sonos rooms and grouping over Wi-Fi; model compatibility governs pairing | No; powered Wi-Fi speaker | Can be a rear pair with a compatible Sonos theater product | Existing Sonos homes, discounted background-music expansion, discreet furniture placement |
| Sonos Era 100 | Current Sonos platform | No; powered speaker | Can expand a compatible Sonos system; verify exact pairing support | Buyers who want a currently sold Sonos compact speaker |
| IKEA Bluetooth speakers | Bluetooth playback, not a direct substitute for Sonos room management | Depends on model | Not a replacement for Sonos surround integration | Individual-room or portable listening where simple Bluetooth is enough |
| Apple HomePod / AirPlay-centered system | Apple-oriented device and AirPlay experience | Powered speaker | Evaluate against Apple TV and household needs | Apple-centric homes valuing Siri and platform integration |
| Wired passive-speaker system | Amplifier and installed speaker wiring | No | Flexible when designed around an AV receiver | New construction or permanent installs where wiring and component choice justify the work |
IKEA’s U.S. speaker category includes Bluetooth products such as KALLSUP, VAPPEBY, and BLOMPRAKT, but those are not direct replacements for Sonos-style room grouping and theater integration. Apple’s HomePod range is more relevant to households centered on Apple devices. A wired system offers greater freedom over amplifiers and speakers, at the cost of installation complexity that can be unattractive to renters or anyone expanding room by room.
Quick Recap
What to check before buying used
- Confirm the exact generation from the label, product number, packaging, or Sonos app.
- Ask the seller to confirm the unit has been reset and can be added to a current Sonos system; avoid a unit still tied to an inaccessible setup.
- Check that the power cable is included and undamaged, and confirm mounting hardware is present if you need it.
- Test that the speaker powers on and appears in the Sonos app before committing when possible.
- Make sure the listing is for the Bookshelf Speaker itself, not a stand, cable, or different SYMFONISK product.
- Do not pay a premium simply because remaining stock is scarce; compare against current Sonos options and the risk of limited replacements.
