Household Bugs That Hide in Firewood and Christmas Trees

Firewood and real Christmas trees can bring dormant insects indoors. Most are harmless; outdoor inspection, careful storage and simple cleanup are usually enough.

Firewood and fresh-cut Christmas trees can bring outdoor insects indoors, but most are harmless hitchhikers—not pests that will infest your home. Warm indoor air can wake dormant insects or hatch eggs. Usually, vacuuming the insects or removing an affected branch is enough; prevention starts with storing firewood outdoors and inspecting a tree before bringing it inside.

What might come inside on firewood or a Christmas tree?

The bugs depend on where they sheltered. Firewood provides bark, crevices and galleries in the wood; a Christmas tree can carry insects or eggs on its needles, branches and trunk.

Material Common hitchhikers and hiding places Likely household concern
Firewood Wood-boring and bark beetles beneath bark or in wood; spiders, wood cockroaches, ants, wasps, hornet queens, sowbugs, pillbugs, millipedes, egg sacs and cocoons in or under logs. Longhorned beetles may develop in green, dying or recently killed wood. [Purdue Extension; University of Minnesota Extension] Most emerge after a log warms indoors and do not establish in dry household wood. [Purdue Extension]
Fresh-cut Christmas tree Aphids and spiders are common; spider mites, adelgids, bark beetles, ants, beetle larvae, mantid egg cases and other egg masses are also possible. Eggs and dormant stages can be on stems or foliage. [Iowa State University Extension; Penn State Extension] Most are nuisance visitors activated by indoor warmth, not threats to occupants or furnishings. [Iowa State University Extension]

Newly hatched insects or spiderlings on Christmas trees may be about 1/16 inch long, according to Iowa State University Extension’s 2019 guidance. A praying-mantis egg sac can contain up to 200 eggs, according to Andrine Shufran of Oklahoma State University Extension in 2023. Those figures describe possible size and egg capacity, not how often a tree carries them. North Carolina State Extension says such pests are rare in most years; no broad national prevalence rate is established. [Iowa State University Extension; Oklahoma State University Extension; North Carolina State Extension]

Why do bugs appear after the wood or tree comes indoors?

Insects and eggs can remain dormant outdoors through cold weather. Indoor heat can activate them or trigger hatching, making it seem as though the house has suddenly become infested. In most cases, the warmth has revealed hitchhikers already on the log or tree; it has not created a continuing indoor population. [Iowa State University Extension; University of Minnesota Extension]

Are firewood and Christmas-tree bugs dangerous?

Usually not. Iowa State University Extension says insects and spiders carried inside on a fresh-cut tree will not harm the tree, house, furnishings or occupants. Purdue Extension notes that most firewood insects are harmless, and most do not attack finished or dried wood inside the home. Bark beetles emerging from a log indoors are not a threat to people, furniture or the house structure. [Iowa State University Extension; Purdue Extension; Iowa State University Extension]

Termites and carpenter ants warrant attention around an outdoor woodpile, but a single log brought inside is not the usual route to a household infestation. Termites need access to soil, while carpenter ants favor damp, unsound wood. If you find signs of either around a building, inspect the damp or soil-connected woodpile and the structure rather than assuming an emerging insect from one dry log has established itself. How to keep firewood bugs outside

  1. Store logs away from the house. Keep the pile off the ground, covered from rain and away from walls. A raised, covered rack can help keep logs elevated; it does not exterminate insects. [Purdue Extension]
  2. Use older wood first. Avoid burying older logs beneath newly added wood so the oldest supply is used before the new stack. [University of Minnesota Extension]
  3. Inspect logs before carrying them in. Knock or brush the bark, check crevices and look for insects or powdery frass beneath loose bark. [Purdue Extension]
  4. Bring in only what you need soon. Keep just a day or two of firewood indoors, rather than storing a large supply beside the fireplace. [University of Minnesota Extension]
  5. Follow local movement rules. Buy or cut firewood locally where regulations restrict moving it, since some wood pests spread when infested logs are transported. [Don’t Move Firewood]

How to prevent and handle bugs on a Christmas tree

  1. Inspect before bringing the tree inside. Outdoors, shake the tree and check the undersides of branches, the trunk and crevices for insects or egg masses. [Iowa State University Extension]
  2. Remove visible egg masses or affected branches. For a conspicuous mantid or other egg case, remove the branch or case and place it outdoors where appropriate. Check local invasive-species guidance before moving egg masses. [Oklahoma State University Extension]
  3. Vacuum insects that emerge indoors. Vacuum or sweep bugs from floors and windowsills, then discard the vacuum contents. Iowa State Extension’s practical advice is to vacuum them up and discard them. [Iowa State University Extension]

Routine pesticide treatment of a fresh-cut tree is unnecessary. For firewood, do not spray insecticide: treating logs is of no practical benefit, and pesticides can produce fumes when treated wood burns. [Iowa State University Extension; Iowa State University Extension]
