Donnington Hall is a Grade II listed country house near Ledbury in Herefordshire. Its present form combines a mid-18th-century core with extensive remodeling and enlargement carried out in 1909 for Admiral Fanshawe. Elizabeth Hurley and Shane Warne bought the estate in 2012 for a reported £6 million, according to the Victoria County History. The often-repeated “$8 million” description is not supported as a current valuation; a separate 2020 media report suggested at least $11 million, also without presenting a professional appraisal.

Where Donnington Hall is—and which Donnington Hall this is

This Donnington Hall stands near Ledbury in Herefordshire, England. It is not Donnington Castle in Berkshire and not the separate Donington Hall in Leicestershire. The house is a privately held historic property; the available sources do not establish current public access, present ownership, or its present condition.

Historic England records the building as a Grade II listed country house, first listed on 18 November 1952. The statutory entry is available at Historic England’s List Entry 1082617.

What the historical record says about the house

A mid-18th-century core

Historic England dates the core of the existing house to the mid-18th century. The Victoria County History also notes that a mansion known as “the Hall” was mentioned in 1675, but that documentary reference should not be treated as the construction date of the current building.

The 1909 enlargement

In 1909 the house was extensively remodeled and enlarged for Admiral Fanshawe. Historic England attributes the work to an architect called Ogilvy. For anyone assessing the building from a construction or conservation perspective, that makes the house a layered document: later work substantially reshaped an earlier country-house core rather than simply preserving a single-period design.

Listed-building significance

Grade II status means alterations are subject to the listed-building consent system in addition to ordinary planning controls. The listing is a legal designation, not a statement that every modern service, interior finish, or item of furniture is historically original. Any proposal involving exterior fabric, significant internal layouts, windows, roofs, or important fixtures would need to be considered against the building’s special architectural and historic interest.

How large is Donnington Hall?

The Victoria County History’s account of the 2012 purchase describes a 13-bedroom mansion on approximately 200 acres. Those figures are historical descriptions from that account, not a current estate brochure or measured survey. A 2020 media report used a different acreage figure, so the two numbers should not be merged into a single precise claim.

Reported detail Figure What it means
Bedrooms 13 Described by the Victoria County History in its account of the 2012 purchase; not a current listing specification.
Estate extent Approximately 200 acres Victoria County History, published in 2023; an approximate historical description.
Historic status Grade II Statutory designation recorded by Historic England.
Current condition and access Not established No verified current inspection, sales listing, or visitor information is supplied by these sources.

How Hurley found and furnished the property

In a June 2014 interview with Country & Town House, Hurley said she discovered Donnington through an advertisement in the magazine and was immediately taken by its photograph. She recalled expecting a “Barbie-pink façade” but finding that the building was “a lovely mellow stone.” She summed up her reaction by saying, “when I saw the picture of Donnington, I just fell in love.”

Hurley also said much of the previous owners’ contents remained after the sale, including books, beds, and cellar stock. She described then furnishing the property afresh and making it her own: “I just had to kit the house out afresh and put my own stamp on it.” Those are her recollections in that 2014 interview, not an independently verified inventory of the house. The interview PDF is available from Country & Town House.

What is Donnington Hall worth?

There is no primary appraisal, current transaction price, or verified present-day valuation in the available evidence. The figures commonly repeated online describe different things and should not be presented as interchangeable.

Figure Date and source What it represents
£6 million 2012 purchase; reported in the Victoria County History’s 2023 publication Historical sale price paid by Elizabeth Hurley and Shane Warne, according to that local-history account.
At least $11 million 2020 realestate.com.au report A dated media estimate, not a professional appraisal or confirmed sale.
$8 million Used in the supplied headline Not verified as a current market value by the cited sources.

The distinction matters. A 2012 purchase price in pounds cannot be converted into a current dollar value without specifying an exchange-rate date, and neither a historical sale nor a newspaper estimate establishes what the estate would command today. The Victoria County History account of Donnington is available as a PDF at VCH Herefordshire. The dated media estimate appears in realestate.com.au’s 2020 report.

What the architecture means for renovation or building work

Start with significance, not finishes

On a listed house with an 18th-century core and a major 1909 phase, a project should begin with a building record: historic plans where available, fabric inspection, room-by-room significance assessment, and identification of later alterations. The aim is to distinguish significant historic work from replaceable modern interventions before designing services or reconfiguring rooms.

Expect consent to be part of the programme

Listed-building consent may be required for works that affect the character of the building. Depending on the proposal, that can include changes to external openings, roof structures, masonry, internal partitions, staircases, paneling, fireplaces, or other fixtures. Planning advice from the relevant local authority and early consultation with a conservation professional are practical safeguards; the Grade II entry itself does not authorize any particular alteration.

Coordinate modern performance upgrades carefully

Energy, fire safety, drainage, heating, electrical distribution, and digital infrastructure all have to be integrated without damaging significant fabric. In a large country house, surveys should also address moisture movement, roof drainage, stonework, timber condition, and the consequences of heating changes. A conservation-led design can place new equipment in less sensitive areas and use reversible details where feasible.

What is known—and not known—about the interior today

  • The 13-bedroom description comes from the Victoria County History’s account of the 2012 purchase.
  • Hurley’s comments about inherited books, beds, cellar stock, and later refurnishing come from her 2014 interview.
  • No cited source verifies the current interior scheme, contents, maintenance state, ownership, or access arrangements.

Accordingly, photographs or lifestyle descriptions from one period should not be treated as a current survey of the property.

The Bottom Line

Donnington Hall is a substantial, Grade II listed Herefordshire house shaped by an 18th-century core and a major 1909 enlargement. The documented 2012 purchase price was £6 million; the headline’s $8 million figure is not a verified current valuation, and the later $11 million figure was only a dated media estimate.
