There is no defensible universal “best” Murphy bed. Wall construction, ceiling height, mattress limits, open projection, delivery terms and installation requirements determine whether a model is suitable. The products below are eight online options or documented product families worth comparing; five have model-level specifications in the available manufacturer material, while three require you to verify the exact SKU before ordering.
Measure the room with the bed closed and fully open, then check the current product page and installation manual. A wall bed is not automatically freestanding or renter-safe.

How to choose the right orientation and footprint
Measure the closed cabinet
- Record finished height, width and depth, including trim, handles and any required clearance from the wall.
- Check ceiling height for vertical models and wall width for horizontal models.
- Confirm that baseboards, outlets, radiators, windows and doors will not interfere with the cabinet or mounting points.
Measure the fully open bed
- Measure the projection from the wall to the foot of the bed, not just the mattress length.
- Leave usable walking space and account for bedding, nearby furniture and doors that must open.
- For sofa, desk or rotating-storage designs, measure every moving position; the room may need more clearance than a simple cabinet bed.
Match the mattress to the mechanism
Mattress rules are model-specific. Compare nominal size, maximum thickness and permitted weight before ordering. For example, Lori states a maximum 10-inch thickness and approximately 70–130 lb, while Expand lists a seven-inch queen maximum for Compatto. Bestar’s cited listing gives a maximum supported weight of 1,000 lb including the mattress. These figures are not interchangeable: confirm whether a capacity includes the mattress, bedding or occupants, and follow the exact manual.
Wall and floor attachment is a safety requirement
Do not assume a wall bed can be secured with ordinary hollow-wall anchors. The Bestar assembly manual warns: IMPACT or CRUSHING HAZARD: If wall bed mechanism is not properly attached to the floor and wall, it can suddenly rotate, resulting in serious injury or death.
That warning applies to the mechanism covered by that manual, not automatically to every brand.

The Bestar manual requires a qualified person for wood and masonry structures, verification of structural integrity, attachment screws appropriate to the wall and floor type, and twelve attachment screws in that manual. It also says never to use hollow wall anchors. Read the current manual for the exact SKU and have a qualified installer assess studs, masonry, floor construction and any baseboard removal or drilling before installation.
Compare formats by what the room must do
Simple cabinet beds
These generally offer the clearest bed-first layout, but they still require open-floor clearance and structural mounting. Compatto’s shallow 11.5-inch cabinet and seven-inch mattress limit illustrate why a thin closed profile can impose a mattress trade-off.

Sofa beds
A sofa configuration preserves seating, but the sofa, mattress platform and moving clearances must all work together. Check the exact open depth, assembly sequence and whether the retailer excludes sleepable or custom products from returns.
Desk, panel and rotating-storage formats
These add daytime utility or concealment but introduce more components and movement. Compare the entire room transformation, not only the closed cabinet depth. Confirm that a desk, shelves or rotating storage will not collide with lighting, outlets or adjacent furniture.

Warranty, delivery and returns: read beyond the headline
- Warranty duration alone is not comparable. Check whether it covers hardware, cabinetry, pistons, labor, shipping and finish defects.
- Confirm whether the warranty applies to commercial use, self-installation or modifications.
- Large furniture often ships by freight. Verify delivery geography, threshold or room-of-choice service, appointment requirements and damage inspection rules.
- Check return exclusions before ordering. Expand notes that certain custom, clearance and sleepable products are not returnable; the exact product page controls.
- Recheck stock, currency and promotional pricing at checkout. Murphy® Wall-Beds Hardware Inc.’s retrieved prices were shown in CAD, not a universal price.
A practical pre-order checklist
- Draw the closed and open footprints to scale, including walking routes.
- Choose vertical or horizontal orientation based on wall width, ceiling height and projection.
- Verify the exact mattress size, thickness and weight against the model manual.
- Identify studs or masonry and confirm the required wall-and-floor attachment method.
- Obtain a qualified installation assessment if the manufacturer requires one or the structure is uncertain.
- Read warranty scope, labor exclusions, freight terms and return exclusions for the exact finish and configuration.

What “best” means for your room
Choose the Bestar queen only if its model-specific ceiling, projection and structural requirements fit your room. Investigate Lori’s horizontal queen when wall width is available but ceiling height is restrictive. Consider Compatto when its seven-inch mattress limit and shallow cabinet suit your sleeping setup. Choose sofa, panel, made-to-order or DIY formats only after measuring every operating position and accepting their different assembly and return conditions.
