The easiest way to use less plastic at home is to prevent disposable items from entering your routine, then reuse what you already own. Start with one repeated decision—shopping bags, takeaway cutlery, bottled drinks or food packaging—and add other changes as they become convenient. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) puts the principle plainly: “The most effective way to reduce waste is to not create it in the first place, so focus on reducing your waste as much as possible.”
1. Keep reusable shopping bags where you will remember them
Put a bag by the front door, in a work bag or in the car. A durable bag already in your home is sufficient; reducing plastic use does not require buying a matching set of new “eco” products. EPA and Singapore’s National Environment Agency (NEA) both recommend reusable shopping bags.
Wash cloth bags regularly and let them dry completely. Health Canada advises frequent washing, particularly after carrying fresh produce, meat, poultry or seafood, and recommends separating bags or bins used for raw animal foods from those used for other groceries. 2. Choose the option with less packaging
When the product, quantity and price work for your household, compare packaging before putting it in the trolley. Choose loose produce, simpler packs or larger formats when you will actually use them. Environment and Climate Change Canada suggests buying in bulk with your own containers where feasible, while NEA recommends choosing products with less packaging.

Availability, hygiene rules and store policies differ. Do not buy a larger package merely to avoid plastic if it will spoil or go unused.
3. Use refills or larger formats when they make practical sense
Refill pouches, concentrate bottles and refill-station purchases can reduce the number of containers you bring home. NEA recommends refillable goods and lists refill packs in its household guide, A Guide to 3R Practices for Households.
Check whether a refill is genuinely available locally, whether the original container can be refilled safely and how your local system handles the package afterward. A refill is an option, not a rule: the least-waste choice depends on what you can obtain and use without waste.

4. Pack meals and leftovers in containers you already own
Use an existing lidded tub, lunchbox or food-safe jar for work meals, school lunches and leftovers instead of disposable takeaway packaging. EPA and NEA both support reusable meal containers.

Choose a container that fits the portion and can be washed easily. Keeping one clean container near the kitchen exit can make the reusable option as quick as grabbing a disposable one.
5. Carry a refillable bottle or thermos
Fill a reusable bottle or thermos at home rather than buying single-use bottles or cartons. This is especially straightforward when you already own a suitable bottle. EPA recommends reusable bottles and thermoses; it also mentions a tap-water filter as an option when it suits your water supply and preference.

Wash the bottle according to its manufacturer’s instructions, including the lid and seal, and allow all parts to dry.
6. Use reusable dishes, glasses and cutlery
For meals at home, use the plates, glasses and cutlery you already have instead of disposable versions. When ordering takeaway, ask the restaurant to leave out items you do not need—such as plastic cutlery, extra napkins and condiment packets. Canada’s federal guidance specifically recommends opting out of unnecessary single-use accessories.

7. Turn old textiles into washable cleaning cloths
Cut up worn cotton clothing, towels or sheets that are no longer suitable for donation and use the pieces for dusting, wiping and basic cleaning. NEA specifically suggests making rags from old clothing. This approach reuses material already in your home rather than replacing disposable wipes with another purchase.
Separate cloths used for food preparation, bathrooms and greasy work, and wash them in a way appropriate to the material and the cleaning products used.

When a plastic item is damaged, first ask whether a safe repair or a different use will extend its life. EPA recommends maintaining and repairing plastic products, buying used plastic goods and passing on usable unwanted items. Donate or give away items that no longer suit your household, and look for second-hand options before buying new.

This does not mean every plastic item can be reused indefinitely. Replace items when they are unsafe, unhygienic or no longer fit for purpose, and handle the discarded item according to local instructions.
9. Recycle only what your local program accepts
Recycling is the final step after prevention and reuse. Check your council, municipality or waste authority’s current list before putting an item in the recycling bin. EPA explains that a resin identification number identifies the plastic type; it does not guarantee curbside acceptance.
- Plastic bags and film: These generally do not belong in household recycling bins. Look for a specified retail or municipal drop-off route where one exists.
- Compostable plastics: They are not intended for conventional plastic recycling and can disrupt that stream. Use a local commercial-composting route only where your authority explicitly accepts them.
- Rigid containers: Follow local rules for rinsing, lids and accepted resin types rather than relying on the number inside the recycling triangle.
Rules vary by location, so the local program—not a symbol on the packaging—determines what belongs in your bin. EPA’s overview is available at What You Can Do to Reduce Plastic Waste.
How to make the changes stick
- Find one repeat purchase. Choose the disposable item your household buys or throws away most often.
- Use what you have. Assign an existing bag, bottle, container or textile to replace it.
- Put the reusable item at the decision point. Store it by the door, in the car, beside the lunch supplies or near the shopping list.
- Add a cleaning routine. Wash and dry bags, bottles, containers and cloths so they are ready for the next use.
- Check local rules for the remainder. Confirm refill availability and recycling or drop-off instructions in your area.
There is no verified universal figure for how much these nine actions save, because results depend on shopping frequency, household size, product choices and local services. Their practical value comes from replacing repeated disposables with items already in use, while avoiding purchases and disposal routes that create unnecessary waste.
