For most exposed residential screw-in floodlights, start with a wet-location-rated LED PAR38 using an E26 medium screw base. Then confirm the fixture’s maximum bulb size, beam angle, lumens, enclosure approval, color temperature, and control compatibility. “Floodlight bulb” describes a job, not one universal shape: a PAR38, BR30, MR16, integrated LED fixture, and security light may all serve different applications.

What counts as a floodlight bulb?

A replacement floodlight lamp is a screw-in reflector bulb, commonly an LED PAR or BR lamp. A security floodlight may use one or two replaceable E26 lamps with motion detection. Landscape systems can use PAR38, PAR30, MR16, GU10, or low-voltage lamps. An integrated LED floodlight is a complete fixture with built-in LEDs and no replaceable bulb.

Identify which type you have before shopping. Replacing a bulb in a socket is different from replacing a hardwired fixture, and reflector lamps are not automatically interchangeable.

Floodlight bulb shapes and sizes

PAR reflector lamps

PAR means parabolic aluminized reflector. PAR lamps generally provide more controlled, directional light than BR lamps. The number indicates approximate diameter in eighths of an inch: PAR20 is about 2.5 inches, PAR30 about 3.75 inches, and PAR38 about 4.75 inches. Actual dimensions and neck lengths vary by model. See manufacturer size and application examples at Feit’s PAR20/PAR30 collection.

Amazon Basics BR30 LED Light Bulbs, 65W Equivalent, 11W E26 Standard Base, Soft White 2700K, Dimmable, 10,000 Hour Lifetime, 6-Pack
  • Start saving today with these energy efficient BR30 LED Light Bulbs. These lights have a E26 Standard base.
  • These 65 watt replacement light bulbs use only 11 watts of energy, costing only $1.32 per year to operate. That is a saving of $59.15 in energy costs over life of the bulb compared to the incandescent equivalent (based on 3 hours/day, $0.11/kWh)
  • 10,000 hour lifespan; lasting over 9 years (based on 3 hours of use each day)
  • Soft White (2700K) providing a soft white light, creating a comfortable atmosphere for any room.
  • Dimmable LED Light Bulbs
  • PAR20: Compact track heads, small accents, and short-distance lighting.
  • PAR30: Recessed accents, track lighting, and medium-area directional light.
  • PAR38: Outdoor security sockets, landscape lighting, large recessed fixtures, and high-output applications.

BR reflector lamps

BR means bulged reflector. BR lamps usually produce a broad, softer distribution with less sharply defined beam edges. BR20 is about 2.5 inches, BR30 about 3.75 inches, and BR40 about 5 inches. BR30 and BR40 are common in recessed cans; a nominal six-inch opening does not guarantee that every lamp fits the trim or housing. Feit’s flood and spot collection lists model-specific dimensions.

Other formats

  • R lamps: Older reflector shapes with less precise optics than many PAR lamps.
  • MR16: Small multifaceted reflector lamps, often low voltage with GU5.3 pins rather than an E26 screw base.
  • GU10: Twist-lock, usually line-voltage lamps.
  • A19: General-purpose omnidirectional bulbs; usually a poor substitute where a fixture requires controlled reflector optics.

Always match the fixture label, socket, voltage, diameter, and length. A lamp that screws in can still aim incorrectly, contact the housing, or violate the fixture instructions.

PAR versus BR: which is better?

Need Starting point Reason
Broad, soft room illumination BR30 or BR40 Wide, diffuse distribution
Controlled outdoor security lighting PAR38 Directional optics and high-output options
Tree or wall accent PAR30 or PAR38 Easy aiming with selectable beams
Small track head PAR20 Compact diameter
Six-inch recessed can BR30, BR40, or PAR30 Trim, depth, and desired beam all matter
Tight architectural accent Narrow-beam PAR Concentrated output

LEDVANCE describes BR beams as commonly 90 degrees or wider and PAR beams as generally no more than about 45 degrees, but these are tendencies, not standards. The exact product specification controls: LEDVANCE’s PAR-versus-BR explanation.

Flood, wide flood, or spot?

Beam angle is the width of the light cone. Consumer categories often use roughly 25 degrees or less for a spot, 25 degrees for a narrow flood, 35–45 degrees for a PAR flood, and 60 degrees or more for a wide flood. Labels vary by manufacturer; Feit, Lutron, and other product pages show why the listed angle matters more than the marketing word “flood” (Feit PAR38 examples, Feit flood/spot listings, Lutron PAR specifications).

  • A beam that is too narrow creates a bright hotspot, dark edges, and glare.
  • A beam that is too wide reduces intensity at the target and can spill into windows or neighboring property.
  • Two correctly aimed fixtures often provide better uniformity than one extremely bright lamp.

How bright should a floodlight bulb be?

Compare lumens, not watts. Lumens measure visible output; watts measure electrical consumption. “Watt equivalent” is a marketing comparison with an older incandescent or halogen lamp, not a precise physical equivalence. Candela or CBCP can help compare intensity in one direction, especially for spotlights.

  • Wide 120° beam angle with 1050 lumens: illuminate large areas with even, glare-free light. the 120-degree wide beam angle and 1050 lumens provide excellent coverage for porches, garages, patios, or yard fixtures.
  • Long lasting performance – 15,000 hour lifespan: designed to last over 13 years (based on 3 hours/day), these long-life LED flood lights minimize replacements and maintenance, offering reliable lighting for years to come.

Examples show the range within PAR38: Feit lists ordinary 13–15 W models at about 900–1,050 lumens and roughly a 90 W halogen comparison; Westinghouse lists a 15 W PAR38 at 1,350 lumens with a 35-degree beam; Feit’s 29.4 W high-output model lists 2,650 lumens and a manufacturer “250 W replacement” comparison (Feit collection, Westinghouse product page, Feit high-output model). These are manufacturer specifications, not a universal conversion.

  • Porch or entry: Moderate output usually gives safer, more comfortable light than maximum output.
  • Path or landscape accent: A controlled beam can outperform a brighter, wide lamp.
  • Driveway or security area: Increase lumens only after considering mounting height, aiming, and glare.
  • Large yard or commercial area: Multiple fixtures or a dedicated floodlight may provide better uniformity than one screw-in lamp.

Color temperature and CRI

Color temperature Appearance and common use
2200–2700K Warm, amber residential or hospitality appearance
3000K Warm-neutral compromise for many homes and outdoor areas
4000K Neutral, cooler white
5000K Daylight-like and crisp, but potentially harsher

Higher color temperature does not automatically improve security. It changes appearance, contrast, glare, and neighborhood impact. Westinghouse offers selectable 2700K–5000K settings on one PAR38 model, while Keystone lists five selectable settings on some products (Westinghouse, Keystone).

CRI describes color accuracy, not brightness or durability. Around 80 CRI is common for general lighting; 90+ CRI is preferable for landscaping, artwork, food, retail displays, and detailed exterior surfaces. Westinghouse lists 80 CRI on its cited PAR38, while Lutron Ketra lists 90+ CRI (Lutron).

Outdoor ratings: dry, damp, and wet locations

  • Dry: No ordinary moisture exposure.
  • Damp: Moisture may occur, but the lamp is not directly exposed to rain.
  • Wet: The lamp can be exposed to water and must be specifically approved for that use.

“Indoor/outdoor” wording is not enough. Confirm the precise wet- or damp-location designation and follow the fixture instructions. Feit states that exposed outdoor fixtures require wet-location-rated bulbs at its outdoor PAR38 page. A wet-rated bulb does not make an unsuitable fixture safe; seals, gaskets, drainage, corrosion, and condensation remain part of the installation.

Enclosed fixtures, bases, voltage, and physical fit

LEDs use less power than halogen but still produce heat in their electronics. Look for a separate statement such as “suitable for enclosed fixtures.” Westinghouse lists its cited PAR38 as wet-location and totally enclosed-fixture approved; Feit lists the cited 29.4 W model as enclosed-fixture rated. Do not infer approval from the words LED, outdoor, or wet-rated alone.

  • Base: E26 is common in U.S. household flood sockets, but GU10, GU5.3, and other bases exist.
  • Voltage: Many residential lamps are 120 V. Low-voltage landscape systems require compatible lamps and transformers.
  • Diameter and length: One Feit high-output PAR38 is about 4.7–4.75 inches wide and 5.2 inches long; Westinghouse lists 5.31 inches maximum overall length. These are model-specific measurements, not universal PAR38 dimensions.
  • Clearance: Check reflector depth, socket orientation, protective lenses, and housing contact before installation.

Dimmers, photocells, motion sensors, and smart controls

The lamp must be labeled dimmable, and the dimmer must be LED-compatible and within its supported load range. Minimum-load requirements can cause flicker, buzzing, or dropout at low settings. Photocells, timers, motion sensors, and smart switches can also misread a low LED load. Feit and Westinghouse both require compatible LED dimmers (Feit, Westinghouse).

Smart bulbs may not work correctly when a wall switch, photocell, or motion sensor repeatedly removes power. A wireless lamp is a poor choice for essential security lighting if loss of connectivity would leave the area dark.

LED versus halogen, CFL, and integrated LED

LED replacement lamps

LEDs offer lower energy use, long rated life, instant-on operation, and many choices of beam, color, dimming, and controls. Trade-offs include higher purchase cost, compatibility issues, glare, and electronic failure from heat, moisture, or poor power quality. Rated life is based on defined conditions and may describe lumen maintenance rather than guaranteed failure-free operation.

Halogen

Halogen provides familiar warm color, strong rendering, and generally predictable dimming, but uses substantially more energy, produces more heat, and has a shorter life.

CFL

CFL can save energy versus incandescent lamps but may start slowly, perform poorly in cold conditions, and offer limited dimming convenience. It is rarely the default choice for a new floodlight installation.

Integrated LED fixtures

Integrated fixtures can combine optics, weather sealing, controls, and coverage more effectively than a bulb. The drawback is serviceability: when the LED module or driver fails, the whole fixture may require replacement, and later changes to color or beam are limited.

Troubleshooting common failures

  • Flicker, buzzing, or dropout: Check that the lamp is dimmable and the dimmer is LED-compatible; inspect minimum-load and sensor requirements.
  • Delayed start or cycling: Investigate incompatible photocells, motion sensors, timers, or smart controls.
  • Premature failure: Verify wet/damp rating, enclosure approval, operating temperature, condensation, corrosion, and voltage quality.
  • Bulb will not fit: Compare maximum diameter, overall length, neck, trim depth, and base; do not force the socket.
  • Poor coverage: Recheck beam angle and fixture aim before increasing lumens.
  • Excessive glare: Use a lower CCT, narrower or better-shielded beam, lower mounting angle, or multiple lower-output fixtures.
  • Tripping or overheating: Turn power off and have the fixture, socket, wiring, and lamp rating inspected; a bulb replacement cannot correct an unsuitable electrical installation.

When a complete floodlight is the better choice

Choose a dedicated integrated floodlight when the area is large, uniform coverage matters, the existing socket is damaged or poorly sealed, or you need coordinated motion detection and weather protection. Choose a replaceable bulb when the fixture is sound and you value easy future changes to brightness, beam, or color.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best bulb for an outdoor floodlight?

Usually a wet-location-rated LED PAR38 with an E26 base, provided its diameter, length, beam, enclosure approval, and control compatibility match the fixture.

Is PAR38 brighter than BR30?

Neither shape guarantees brightness. Compare each model’s lumen rating, beam angle, and candela; PAR38 simply offers a larger, more directional format than BR30.

Can I use a PAR38 in a recessed can?

Only if the trim and housing accept its diameter and length and the lamp is approved for the fixture, including any enclosed-fixture requirement.
