It is most useful to existing SONOFF or eWeLink owners who want local control or Matter bridging and are comfortable setting up a Raspberry Pi, NAS, or virtual machine. Public evidence shows community use and ongoing development, not widespread adoption.
What eWeLink CUBE is—and what it is not
eWeLink CUBE OS is free, self-hosted software for managing compatible smart-home devices. It can run on a Raspberry Pi, NAS, virtual machine, or other suitable host. SONOFF iHost is different: it is a hardware product with CUBE OS preinstalled. You do not need to buy an iHost to run the standalone software.
CUBE can work alongside the ordinary eWeLink cloud service; it is not necessarily a complete replacement for it. Account authorization, remote access, firmware updates, and some device functions may still involve cloud services. The official CUBE FAQ explains the distinction between local CUBE operation, cloud services, and iHost.
Who uses CUBE, and what are they trying to do?
SONOFF and eWeLink owners seeking local control
The clearest audience is someone who already owns compatible eWeLink Wi-Fi devices and wants a local management option. CUBE’s eWeLink Smart Home add-on can authorize an eWeLink account and synchronize selected devices. Whether a particular device works locally depends on its model and firmware; “local-first” does not mean every device works without internet access. See the Wi-Fi device setup guide and check the exact device before relying on offline operation.

Matter users bridging existing devices
CUBE can expose supported devices to Matter platforms including Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, and Home Assistant. That makes it relevant to people who want to bring compatible eWeLink or Zigbee devices into another ecosystem. The Matter Bridge documentation and compatibility material include beta qualifications, and a Matter connection may expose only a device’s basic functions—not every timer, energy reading, scene, lock, or special mode available in its original app. Consult the Matter compatibility list and bridge instructions for the supported device categories and platform-specific steps.
Home-server hobbyists adding Zigbee
With a compatible Zigbee coordinator, CUBE can add Zigbee devices from multiple brands. This appeals to people already running a home server or willing to troubleshoot USB access, networking, and device pairing. Compatibility is model-specific: confirm the coordinator, device, firmware, and host combination in the current documentation before buying hardware.
People who want CUBE without building a host
Some users choose iHost because it arrives with CUBE installed. Others install standalone CUBE on hardware they already own. These are two ways to use the platform, not proof that all hardware and software versions behave identically; check the applicable release documentation.

What CUBE can do
Manage compatible eWeLink Wi-Fi devices
The eWeLink Smart Home add-on connects an account, requests authorization, and lets the user synchronize selected compatible devices. It is not a blanket promise that every SONOFF product—or every feature of a supported product—will be available.
Add Zigbee devices
A supported Zigbee dongle enables CUBE to pair Zigbee devices. The Raspberry Pi guide mentions SONOFF ZBDongle-MAX, ZBDongle-PMG24, ZBDongle-LMG21, ZBDongle-E, and ZBDongle-P among candidate adapters, but the list is not a guarantee for every release or device. Check the current Pi and dongle guidance before purchasing.
Bridge selected devices to Matter
The published Matter compatibility list covers categories such as on/off plugs, dimmable and color-temperature lights, occupancy and contact sensors, humidity, temperature and light sensors, switches, thermostats, window coverings, smoke and carbon-monoxide alarms, air-quality sensors, air conditioners, and fans. These are supported clusters or device categories, not assurance that every product in a category exposes every capability. CUBE also has a Matter Hub/Controller function for onboarding supported Matter devices; the relevant Matter device guide labels support as beta in at least one section.
Build a local control setup
Official CUBE materials describe scenes, rooms, groups, CAST dashboards, backup and restore, over-the-air firmware updates, add-ons, and remote access. Feature availability can vary by software release and installation method. The standalone project has a public GitHub repository, documentation, and community material.
Is CUBE active, or abandoned?
It is not abandoned: CUBE moved from beta testing to an official release, its documentation and download path remain available, and its official forum published a 2026 development focus that includes Matter upgrades, broader Zigbee compatibility, dongle detection, OTA updates, and dashboard improvements. The official release and community survey discussion and 2026 roadmap discussion show project and community activity.
That is evidence of a real user community, not mass adoption. The public signals are modest: the public GitHub repository listed 118 stars and six watchers, while much of the visible user discussion is on official forums and community posts. There is no reliable installation count or market-share figure here, so “real users, early-stage ecosystem” is more accurate than either “widely adopted” or “nobody uses it.”

What setup involves
CUBE is approachable if you have installed an operating-system image or configured a VM before. It is not as effortless as using a cloud app: you need an always-on host, working network access, and—if you want Zigbee—a compatible coordinator that the host can reach.
Raspberry Pi
The current official guide recommends a Raspberry Pi 4B or 5 with at least 4 GB of RAM, a microSD card rated at least C10 and A1, Ethernet, and a suitable power adapter. A Zigbee dongle is optional unless you need Zigbee. The guide warns that inadequate power supplies, including unsuitable phone chargers or computer USB ports, can cause problems; storage and power should be treated as prerequisites, not afterthoughts.
Virtual machine, NAS, or existing server
The official installation options include Raspberry Pi, virtual machines, and NAS systems. VirtualBox and Hyper-V guidance recommends about 4 GB of virtual memory, two virtual CPUs, and bridged networking; VirtualBox requires EFI to boot, while Hyper-V requires Secure Boot disabled for the converted image. NAT or isolated networking can interfere with discovery, web access, Matter commissioning, and device synchronization. The VirtualBox guide, VMware guide, and Hyper-V guide give platform-specific instructions.

Best Value
- Powerful EFR32MG24 chip. Powered by the advanced EFR32MG24 chip, offering richer resources and higher performance to deliver faster automation processing and stable sub-device control.
- Enhanced Antenna Gain. Default 3dBi antenna gain, optimized up to 4.5dBi for stronger signal strength and wider coverage, ensures a reliable device connection.
- Wide platform compatibility. Zigbee Dongle works with Home Assistant, Zigbee2MQTT, openHAB and supports Zigbee 3.0 devices such as Philips Hue, Aqara, IKEA Tradfri and SONOFF.
- Flexible firmware flashing. Firmware can be easily flashed via the SONOFF dongle flasher or Add-on to switch between Zigbee coordinator, router or Thread RCP mode.
- Compact design with USB extension cable. Smaller enclosure with USB extension cable allows flexible placement and reduces electromagnetic interference for stable communication.
One notable limitation: Hyper-V does not provide native USB passthrough for Zigbee dongles. A USB-over-IP arrangement or network-based Zigbee coordinator is needed if the CUBE VM must use Zigbee hardware. A VM that boots successfully does not necessarily have access to every peripheral.
Typical first setup
- Download the current CUBE OS image from the official quickstart page.
- Flash the image to a Raspberry Pi, or import the appropriate disk image into your chosen virtual machine.
- Connect the host to the home network. Ethernet or bridged networking is preferable for local discovery and device communication.
- Boot CUBE OS and open its web interface using the displayed IP address or
cube.local. - For eWeLink Wi-Fi devices, install the eWeLink Smart Home add-on, authorize the account, and synchronize selected devices using the device instructions.
- Connect a compatible Zigbee coordinator and pair Zigbee devices if needed.
- Use the Matter Bridge instructions to share supported devices with the chosen Matter platform.
- Test the exact functions you need on each device rather than assuming that all app features carry through Matter.
CUBE compared with eWeLink Cloud, Home Assistant, and iHost
| Option | Main appeal | Hardware and setup | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CUBE OS | Local CUBE ecosystem and Matter bridging | Runs on a Pi, NAS, VM, or server; moderate setup | SONOFF/eWeLink owners who self-host | Smaller community and model-specific compatibility |
| Ordinary eWeLink | Simple official setup for eWeLink devices | Usually no local server; low setup effort | Casual users who value convenience | More cloud-centered and tied to vendor-supported features |
| Home Assistant | Broad integrations and automation flexibility | Needs a host and more configuration and maintenance | Mixed-brand or advanced smart-home projects | Complexity; local behavior varies by integration and device |
| SONOFF iHost | CUBE preinstalled on dedicated hardware | Turnkey hardware; less assembly than a DIY host | Users wanting CUBE without preparing a Pi or VM | Hardware purchase and CUBE ecosystem limits |
This is a general comparison, not a claim that every Home Assistant integration is local or equally reliable. CUBE is best understood as a focused local control and bridge option; Home Assistant is usually the broader platform for unusual integrations, deeper custom logic, and extensive automation.
When CUBE is worth trying—and when it is not
It is worth considering if you
- Already own compatible SONOFF or eWeLink devices and want a local management path.
- Want to bridge supported devices into a Matter ecosystem.
- Have a Pi, NAS, VM, or server available, or are comfortable maintaining one.
- Want to experiment with local-first control while accepting model and firmware limits.
Look elsewhere if you
- Need the broadest integration library, advanced automation engine, custom dashboards, or mature third-party troubleshooting resources.
- Expect a plug-and-play hub with no image flashing, networking decisions, or maintenance.
- Cannot verify that your exact devices and required features are supported.
- Plan to run a directly connected Zigbee dongle inside Hyper-V without a workaround.
Verdict by reader type
For an existing SONOFF/eWeLink owner with spare server hardware, CUBE is a reasonable project to try—especially if Matter bridging or local control is the goal. A privacy-minded user should treat it as local-first for supported devices, not as a guarantee of full offline operation. A casual user who wants the simplest setup may be better served by ordinary eWeLink. Someone building a sophisticated mixed-brand system should compare CUBE with Home Assistant before committing. If you would need to buy hardware solely for CUBE, verify device compatibility and required Matter features first; do not buy on the assumption that every SONOFF device will work.
