For the broadest residential chemistry coverage, choose the WaterGuru SENSE S3. It tests free chlorine, pH, total alkalinity, cyanuric acid (CYA) and calcium hardness with replaceable reagent cassettes. For frequent app-based pH and ORP trends without a listed subscription, consider the Ondilo ICO Pool. Neither type replaces a good manual test kit: ORP is not a free-chlorine reading in ppm, and no monitor in this list automatically adds chemicals.

Quick comparison: five pool monitors

System Best for What it measures Testing approach Recurring costs and availability
WaterGuru SENSE S3 Broadest residential chemistry coverage Free chlorine, pH, total alkalinity, CYA, calcium hardness; temperature and pump-flow data Reagent cassette; daily chemistry tests C5+ three-pack listed at $76, designed for about three months of daily testing. S3 listed at $399, with a $359.10 sale price on WaterGuru’s store.
Ondilo ICO Pool No-subscription connected monitoring pH, ORP and temperature; salt or TDS-related measurement depends on configuration Electrochemical probes; product page says readings are hourly $449 on the U.S. product page; no subscription fee listed. Probe and calibration costs should be checked before purchase.
iopool EcO Start + Connect Pool and spa owners willing to wait for stock pH, ORP and temperature Electrochemical sensors with a Bluetooth/Wi-Fi gateway $359 on the U.S. page, which showed sold out/preorder. No subscription required; page states a two-year warranty.
Pentair ChemCheck Owners with compatible Pentair automation pH and ORP-based water-quality monitoring Installed monitoring integrated with compatible automation Current price and availability are not established in Pentair’s product material. Confirm compatibility and installation requirements before buying.
Aiper HydroComm Buyers considering a newer smart monitor Exact chemistry panel and sensing method not established by the available official product information Manufacturer describes it as a smart pool monitor Aiper’s U.S. store showed $459 against a $499 reference price. Verify the current manual, support terms and availability.

Prices and stock are snapshots from the cited U.S. product pages and can change. These products are not equivalent: WaterGuru directly tests a wider set of named chemistry parameters, while the other shortlisted monitors primarily use pH and ORP signals.

What a pool chemical monitor measures—and what it does not

A useful monitor should fit the water problem you need to manage. Free chlorine is the sanitizer concentration many chlorine-pool owners need to track. pH affects swimmer comfort, sanitizer effectiveness and the risk of corrosion. Total alkalinity buffers pH changes; CYA stabilizes outdoor chlorine but can become excessive; and calcium hardness matters particularly for plaster, concrete and other calcium-sensitive surfaces.

ORP, or oxidation-reduction potential, is different. It is a voltage-based indicator of disinfection or oxidation activity, not a direct free-chlorine concentration in ppm. pH, temperature, CYA and other water conditions influence it. Ondilo describes ORP as an indicator of disinfection levels, while iopool calls it “disinfection capacity.” An ORP reading can help show a trend, but it cannot be read as though it were a chlorine test result. Ondilo’s explanation of its sensing technology and iopool’s EcO product information describe those measurements.

  • TIPS FOR ACCURATE RESULTS: Keep wet fingers away from the strips. Read under natural daylight for best results.Store in a cool dry place. The expiration is 3 years from manufacture. Once opened, use up in 90 days.

Salinity or total dissolved solids (TDS) readings can be useful, especially in salt pools, but they do not replace a complete water test. A monitor limited to pH and ORP will not tell you whether CYA, alkalinity or calcium hardness is out of range.

How to interpret “continuous” monitoring

A device can stay in the water without taking a complete chemistry measurement every minute. ICO’s product page describes hourly readings of pH, ORP and temperature. WaterGuru uses a cassette to perform daily chemistry tests; it is not a continuous free-chlorine probe. A trend monitor can flag a developing change between manual tests, but the frequency and type of measurement matter more than the word “smart.”

WaterGuru says its C5/C5+ cassette measures free chlorine, pH, total alkalinity, CYA and calcium hardness. It is designed for roughly one month of daily testing; C2/C2+ cartridges are designed for approximately two months. Check the cassette details for the current model and cartridge information.

1. WaterGuru SENSE S3: best for broad chemistry coverage

SENSE S3 is the clearest pick when you want more than a sanitizer-activity trend. With a C5/C5+ cassette, it tests free chlorine, pH, total alkalinity, CYA and calcium hardness. The monitor sits at the skimmer, and WaterGuru lists a float ring for hot tubs and above-ground pools. Its app can provide advice tailored to pool type, size and chemical choices, and the company says the residential SENSE app has no annual subscription. See the SENSE product page for current fit and setup details.

Costs to account for

WaterGuru’s supplies page listed a C5+ three-pack at $76, designed for about three months of daily tests. At that listed price and year-round daily use, four three-packs annualize to about $304 before tax and shipping. A C2+ three-pack was also listed at $76 and is designed for about six months of daily measurements; two packs would annualize to about $152 at that same price. These are estimates, not guaranteed yearly expenses: actual use depends on season length, testing frequency and future prices. Check the current cassette prices and WaterGuru’s operating-cost guidance.

The product page showed SENSE S3 at $399, with a displayed sale price of $359.10. SENSE S2 was shown out of stock on WaterGuru’s store, so check the current product availability rather than assuming that model is readily available. The company’s claim that the device meets or exceeds professional DPD testing standards is a manufacturer claim, not an independent comparison.

Choose it if you want direct free-chlorine readings and a broader chemistry panel, and accept cassette replacement. It is a poor fit if you want instant readings after each chemical addition or a system with no consumables.

2. Ondilo ICO Pool: best no-subscription monitor for frequent trends

ICO measures pH, ORP and temperature, and its U.S. product page describes hourly readings. It supports chlorine, bromine and salt-treated pools, offers app status and dosing recommendations, and advertises rechargeable battery life of up to six months. The U.S. page listed it at $449 and did not list a subscription fee. See ICO Pool’s product details and Ondilo’s product overview.

Its trade-off is a narrower chemistry panel than WaterGuru’s: the core readings do not provide direct CYA, total alkalinity or calcium-hardness results. Treat ORP as a trend in disinfection activity, not a free-chlorine ppm value. Before purchase, confirm probe replacement and calibration requirements and their costs; no total cost of ownership is established here.

Choose it if remote, frequent pH/ORP monitoring and no listed software subscription matter more to you than a broad chemistry panel. Do not choose it as a substitute for direct chlorine and stabilizer testing.

3. iopool EcO Start + Connect: a pool-and-spa option, subject to stock

EcO reports pH, ORP and temperature, and the Start + Connect bundle includes a Bluetooth/Wi-Fi gateway. Its app gives maintenance recommendations; the U.S. page states that no subscription is required and lists a two-year warranty. It showed a price of $359, but also showed the product as sold out and described it as a preorder. Check the U.S. product page before planning a purchase.

The gateway adds a connectivity component, and the chemistry panel is narrower than WaterGuru’s. The available product information presents EcO for pools and spas, but confirm salt-pool compatibility for the precise model in its current documentation rather than assuming it from ORP measurement alone.

4. Pentair ChemCheck: best for an existing compatible automation system

Pentair describes ChemCheck as installed water-quality monitoring that uses pH and ORP, sends alerts to a smart device and provides recommended chemical dosage guidance. Its strongest case is for an owner already using compatible Pentair automation—not a buyer looking for a moveable standalone monitor. Pentair’s product material is the reference for its stated capabilities.

Confirm the compatible AquaLink RS configuration, installation needs, current availability and price with Pentair or an installer. Do not assume ChemCheck supplies CYA, alkalinity or calcium-hardness results; the cited product material does not establish that broad panel.

5. Aiper HydroComm: verify its chemistry panel before buying

Aiper’s U.S. store describes HydroComm as a smart pool monitor and underwater communication device; it showed a $459 sale price against a $499 reference price. The available official product information does not establish the exact chemistry measurements, whether it measures free chlorine directly or relies on ORP, its consumables, or its connectivity requirements. Do not rank it as an accuracy leader or rely on a third-party “five-in-one” description without checking the current manual. See Aiper’s U.S. store and verify the current owner’s manual and support terms before purchase.

Will a monitor work with a saltwater pool?

Saltwater pools still use chlorine: a salt cell generates it, but owners must also manage pH, stabilizer, alkalinity and other water conditions. ICO explicitly lists compatibility with chlorine, bromine and salt-treated pools. For other devices, check the exact model documentation for salt-system compatibility; an ORP reading by itself is not proof that a monitor is suitable for every salt pool. Also distinguish a salinity measurement from a complete chemistry panel.

Does a pool monitor automatically add chemicals?

No product in this shortlist should be mistaken for an automatic chemical-dosing system. A monitor may report measurements, send alerts or recommend an adjustment; those functions do not mean it physically dispenses chemicals. ChemCheck is described as giving dosage guidance, not as automatically adding chemicals. Follow the chemical product label and allow the pool to circulate after treatment before judging a new reading. EPA’s pool-product label illustrates why product-specific directions and water-balance requirements take precedence over a device recommendation.

Keep a manual test kit for verification

A smart monitor is most useful as a convenience and trend tool. Keep a quality liquid-reagent kit, such as a Taylor residential kit, to verify readings when the water needs more than routine attention. Manual testing is especially important when:

  • Opening or closing the pool, or adding a large quantity of chemicals.
  • Water is cloudy, green or otherwise visibly abnormal.
  • A monitor reading seems implausible or differs from the pool’s behavior.
  • A probe is overdue for cleaning, calibration or replacement.
  • You need to confirm free chlorine, CYA, alkalinity or calcium hardness.
  • You are deciding whether it is safe to swim after treatment; do not use a monitor alone as the safety authority.

Taylor’s residential test-kit documentation provides manual-testing context for pH, free chlorine and alkalinity. A manual test also gives you an independent check when an app’s recommendation does not fit the situation.

How to choose the right system

  • Want the widest measured chemistry panel? Choose WaterGuru SENSE S3, after comparing the hardware price with your expected cassette use.
  • Want frequent pH/ORP trends without a listed subscription? Consider Ondilo ICO, while retaining separate tests for parameters it does not report.
  • Need one monitor for pool or spa use and can wait for fulfillment? Consider iopool EcO after confirming stock and compatibility.
  • Already have Pentair automation? Ask Pentair or your installer to confirm ChemCheck compatibility, installation and current pricing.
  • Considering HydroComm? Wait until the current manual establishes what it measures, how it connects and what maintenance it needs.
  • Want the simplest independent check? Use a Taylor liquid test kit or a pool-service test rather than paying for remote monitoring you do not need.

What to check before ordering

  • Coverage: Look for direct free-chlorine measurement if you want a ppm result, and confirm whether CYA, alkalinity and calcium hardness are included.
  • Measurement frequency: Distinguish hourly probe readings from daily cassette testing; neither necessarily means a full test every minute.
  • Operating cost: Include cartridges, probes, calibration supplies and any subscription—not just the device price.
  • Pool fit: Confirm compatibility with chlorine, salt chlorine generators, bromine, spas, above-ground pools and your skimmer or installation setup.
  • Connectivity: Find out whether the device needs a gateway, what works over Bluetooth, whether alerts need internet access and whether readings are stored when the connection fails. Do not assume offline operation without confirmation from the manufacturer.
  • Recommendation versus control: Check whether the app shows readings, recommends doses, alerts you or actually controls dosing equipment. These are different capabilities.
  • Availability and support: Verify current stock, warranty, probe or cassette supply and compatible automation before committing.
