Drawers 101: How Drawer Boxes, Slides, and Sizing Work

A drawer’s box, front, and slides do different jobs. Learn how to choose hardware and size a box that fits the cabinet and intended contents.

A drawer is more than its visible front: the box holds the contents, and the slide system determines how it moves and how much clearance the box needs. Plan around what the drawer will hold, choose compatible slides, then size and fit the box to the cabinet and the hardware manufacturer’s instructions.

What makes up a drawer?

A typical drawer has a box—four sides and a bottom panel—that carries the contents. The visible front may be built into that box or attached separately as a false front. That distinction matters when replacing or adjusting a drawer: the face you see does not necessarily show how the box is built.

Construction choices such as material, joinery, bottom-panel installation, and dimensional accuracy influence strength and fit. Start by deciding what the drawer needs to do, rather than choosing dimensions or hardware in isolation.

Choose the drawer design for its purpose

Consider the contents, expected weight, access needs, and the cabinet’s appearance before cutting parts. WOOD magazine’s Drawers 101 guide describes two common front arrangements:

#1 Best Overall
Rear Track Brackets (1 Pair)
  • DOOR TRACK – The closet track is used to hang a pair of by-passing sliding closet door panels; features double-J tracks for the installation of a 2-door panel system; the kit will safely hold doors that weigh up to 60-pounds each
  • INCLUDES – Each closet door kit includes an adjustable bottom guide (constructed of a steel base with adjustable plastic tips), brass-plated stamped-steel finger pulls and installation instructions
  • DURABLE – Constructed of a galvanized track with other steel and plastic components, the door track kit features brass-plated stamped-steel finger pulls
  • DIMENSIONS – The track length is pre-cut to 71 inches to minimize the need for cutting; the closet door track is commonly used with wooden door panels measuring 3/4 inch, 7/8 inch, 1-1/8 inch, or 1-3/8 inch thick
  • NOTE – Please refer to the line art drawing for further dimensional information, please see the rear drawer back plate line drawing (Not Universal)
  • Inset front: Sits flush within the cabinet opening when closed.
  • Overlay front: Sits over the cabinet or face frame. It may cover the opening fully; a rabbet can also make a false front appear less bulky.

The front style affects how the closed drawer looks, but it does not determine the slide type. Select the slides early, because their mounting and clearance requirements affect the box dimensions.

What are the different types of drawer slides?

Slides, also called runners, guide a drawer as it opens and closes. Compare them by where they mount, how far they extend, their load rating, and any opening or closing mechanism. Sugatsune’s Drawer Slides Hardware Basics guide organizes slide options by these characteristics.

Slide type or feature What it means What to consider
Side-mount Attaches to the drawer sides and cabinet. Requires room at the sides; check the exact model’s clearance requirements.
Undermount Fits beneath the drawer and is concealed from the side. May require specific bottom recesses, notches, drilling, or clips.
Center or wood slide Uses a center-mounted or wooden guiding arrangement rather than a typical pair of side-mounted metal slides. Can suit furniture where visible metal hardware is undesirable; verify the design and fit for the project.
Roller or epoxy-coated slide A basic slide option described by WOOD magazine. The magazine’s 2022 guide says these generally cost less, have lower capacity, and provide less than full access; confirm current model specifications.
Ball-bearing slide A slide type available in different extension options. WOOD magazine describes three-quarter and full-extension versions; match extension and load rating to the drawer’s use.
Partial or three-quarter extension Does not bring the drawer fully out of the cabinet. Leaves less access to the rear than full extension.
Full extension Allows the drawer to travel farther out for access. For heavy contents, WOOD magazine recommends a heavyweight-rated full-extension slide; use the specific product’s published rating.

Some slide families also offer soft-close, self-close, push-open, locking, detachable, or friction mechanisms. Soft-close and self-close mechanisms engage near the end of closing; push-open lets the user open a compatible drawer by pressing it. Such features may change the required preparation or hardware, so check compatibility before building.

For loose contents such as silverware, WOOD magazine’s 2022 guide recommends soft-close slides to reduce shifting as the drawer closes. For wooden slides or a cabinet dust frame, the guide describes self-adhesive glide strips as a way to reduce friction.

How do you know what size drawer box you need?

There is no single clearance figure that applies to every slide. Measure the cabinet opening and check the documentation for the exact slide model before fixing the box dimensions. Drawer.com’s Western Dovetail Ordering Tips & Tricks recommends checking the opening width, slide clearance, slide length, obstructions, and any bottom-recess requirements.

  1. Measure the opening. Record the inside width, available depth, and opening height. Identify anything that could interfere with movement, including a face frame, hinges, plumbing, or stretchers.
  2. Select or confirm the slide system. Use its installation instructions to determine the required side clearance, compatible length, and any special box preparation.
  3. Set the box dimensions from those requirements. The box width must account for the chosen system’s clearances, and its depth must work with a compatible slide length. Do not assume that dimensions for one manufacturer or model apply to another.
  4. Check the bottom and hardware details. Undermount systems may call for a recessed bottom, notches, drilling, or clips. Confirm these before assembling the box.
  5. Trial-fit an unfamiliar setup. If the slide model or application is new, make a mock-up before ordering or building production quantities.

Drawer.com’s custom drawer box guide also emphasizes that box dimensions and construction are part of ordering a drawer that fits. Follow the current instructions for the selected product rather than relying on a universal sizing formula.

How should a drawer be built for heavy contents?

Both the box and slides must suit the intended load. Choose a slide with a published rating appropriate to the drawer’s contents, and build the box to match the demands of the project. A slide rating is specific to a product and its stated conditions; do not transfer a load figure from one model or brand to another.

WOOD magazine’s 2022 guide recommends 5/8- or 3/4-inch-thick drawer sides and a 1/2-inch bottom for heavy-load drawers. Treat those dimensions as that guide’s construction recommendation, not a universal rule: the suitable material and joinery also depend on the design, span, and hardware.

What to check before replacing a drawer

A replacement needs to fit both the cabinet and its slide system. Before ordering or making a box, check:

  • Whether the existing visible front is integral to the box or attached separately.
  • The opening’s width, depth, and height, plus any obstructions.
  • The slide’s mounting position, required clearances, extension, and compatible length.
  • Whether the replacement box needs notches, recesses, holes, clips, or other model-specific preparation.
  • Whether the slide’s published load rating and mechanism suit the contents and intended use.

When details are uncertain, identify the exact slide model and consult its current manufacturer documentation. A trial installation can reveal fit problems before you commit to multiple boxes.

Sources and date context
