A 100–300-watt projector used four hours daily would cost roughly $27–$81 per year for electricity at the U.S. residential average of 18.44¢/kWh (May 2026). Replacement lamps, filters, installation, repairs, screens and audio equipment can matter more than power. Lamp models are often cheapest to buy but can become costly with daily use; LED and laser models generally avoid routine lamp purchases.
How much does it cost to power a projector?
Use the projector’s actual consumption, your viewing schedule and your tariff:
Annual electricity cost = (watts ÷ 1,000) × hours per day × days per year × price per kWh
At 18.44¢/kWh, the U.S. residential average reported for May 2026 by the U.S. Energy Information Administration, illustrative active-use costs are:

| Projector draw | Use pattern | Electricity-only cost |
|---|---|---|
| 100 W | 4 hours/day, 365 days/year | About $27/year |
| 200 W | 4 hours/day, 365 days/year | About $54/year |
| 300 W | 4 hours/day, 365 days/year | About $81/year |
| 200 W | 2 hours/day, 3 days/week | About $11/year |
| 300 W | 8 hours/day, 5 days/week | About $115/year |
These figures exclude standby draw and accessories. Your state, utility tariff, time-of-use pricing and brightness mode can change the result substantially; EIA’s May 2026 state data shows residential rates ranging from the low teens to well above 25¢/kWh in some states (state electricity prices).
Why the specification wattage is only a starting point
Rated consumption can differ between Normal, Eco, Dynamic, Cinema and HDR modes, and between startup, active playback, sleep and standby. A 120-volt specification is not automatically comparable with a 230-volt model. For a reliable budget, check the manual’s rated consumption and measure the projector with a plug-in power meter in the mode you actually use.

| Example | Rated draw | Rated lamp life |
|---|---|---|
| PowerLite 990U | 210 W | Approximately 6,000 hours Normal / 12,000 Eco |
| PowerLite 570/575W | 215 W | Approximately 5,000 Normal / 10,000 Eco |
| PowerLite 580/585W | 245 W | Approximately 4,000 Normal / 6,000 Eco |
| Higher-output Epson examples | Approximately 380–400 W per lamp | Shorter ratings in some modes |
Eco mode normally lowers power, fan noise and lamp wear, but also reduces brightness and can alter HDR or image appearance. BenQ’s December 2023 comparison, for example, lists the LH730 LED at 268 W Normal and 190 W typical SmartEco, the LH650 laser at 200 W Normal and 151 W typical SmartEco, the Epson Pro EX11000 at 272 W, and the lamp-based Epson PowerLite 992F at 345 W. Those model and price details are historical comparison data, not current 2026 pricing (BenQ comparison).
The hidden cost: replacement lamps
For a lamp projector, the lamp is often the largest recurring ownership cost. A genuine Epson ELPLP85 was listed at $130 in 2026 for specified PowerLite Home Cinema 3000/3500/3600e models. At a 6,000-hour rating, that is an accounting cost of about 2.17¢ per operating hour:
$130 ÷ 6,000 hours ≈ $0.0217 per hour
At four hours daily, that works out to roughly $32 per year before tax, shipping, installation or earlier replacement. A 210-W projector at the May 2026 electricity average costs about $57 per year for power, so this illustration totals about $88 per year. The lamp price is not compatible with every 210-W projector; confirm the exact part number for your model.

Lamp ratings are estimates, not deadlines
- Normal and Eco ratings can differ by thousands of hours.
- Heat, blocked ventilation, dust, filters, power cycling and ambient conditions affect life.
- Brightness usually declines before the lamp fails completely; “still turns on” is not the same as “still bright enough.”
- Third-party lamps may change the economics but introduce compatibility, safety, image-quality and warranty uncertainty.
Are LED and laser projectors cheaper to run?
They usually remove scheduled bulb purchases, but they are not maintenance-free. BenQ describes applicable LED and laser light sources as rated for approximately 20,000–30,000 hours and not user-serviceable (LED guidance; laser guidance). Epson describes up to an estimated 20,000 hours for a high-output laser source, approximately to the point where brightness falls to 50% of initial output, varying with use and environment (Epson sustainability report).
LED and laser systems dim gradually, and a failed light engine is generally a service-centre repair rather than a user lamp swap. On an older projector, that repair may not be economical. Their higher purchase price is easiest to justify when the projector runs frequently, is difficult to access, or would cause costly downtime.

Projector versus TV running costs
There is no universal winner. Compare specific models at the same viewing schedule and useful image size. A projector may use less electricity than a very large, bright television, but more than a smaller efficient TV. Projector brightness, picture mode, screen gain, room lighting, standby behavior and attached equipment all matter.

Operating cost versus total cost
- Operating cost: electricity, lamps, filters and routine service.
- Total ownership cost: purchase price, screen, mount, cables, streaming device, audio, installation, repairs and replacement cycle.
- Value: cost for the image size or viewing area you actually want.
For daily television viewing, a TV is often simpler: no screen or mount, instant operation and no lamp schedule. A projector is compelling when you need a much larger image, can darken the room and accept setup and accessory costs.

The examples below show operating costs only; purchase prices, screens, audio and installation are excluded.
| Profile | Illustrative use | Electricity over 5 years | Other recurring cost | What it shows |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Occasional home movies | 200 W, 2 hours/day, 3 days/week | About $55 | Usually no lamp change within five years at this schedule | Power is normally minor; purchase and accessories dominate. |
| Daily home viewing | 200 W, 4 hours/day, 365 days/year | About $270 | About $160 lamp amortization using $130/6,000 hours | A lamp model can approach $430 in illustrative operating costs. |
| Classroom or commercial use | 300 W, 8 hours/day, 5 days/week | About $575 | Filters, lamps, labour and downtime can be substantial | Access, duty-cycle warranty and serviceability may outweigh electricity. |
At four hours daily, 6,000 rated hours is about 4.1 years (6,000 ÷ 1,460). At eight hours daily, it is about two years. Actual replacement timing depends on brightness and conditions.

Maintenance and hidden costs
Potential costs include:
- Air-filter cleaning or replacement and dust removal.
- Fan, power-supply, optical or port repairs.
- Ceiling-mount installation, lift rental and service access.
- Screen, HDMI or wireless accessories, streaming hardware and speakers.
- Calibration, blackout curtains, surge protection or a UPS.
- Proper disposal of mercury-containing lamps where applicable.
BenQ’s commercial guide cites example replacement-filter costs of about $40–$60 and highlights lamp labour and lift access; treat those figures as examples, not universal 2026 rates (BenQ commercial guide). A sealed light source reduces lamp work but does not prevent every fan, optical, software or power-supply failure.
How usage and installation change the decision
Occasional use
Two movie nights per week usually produce very little electricity cost. A lamp may last many calendar years, although it can still dim or become hard to source.
Daily use
Daily viewing reaches rated lamp hours quickly. LED or laser can justify a premium by avoiding lamp changes and simplifying startup and shutdown.
Heavy commercial use
For classrooms, offices, churches, bars and signage, check approved duty cycle, warranty limits, filter access, brightness retention and service arrangements. Do not assume a consumer projector is approved for 24/7 operation. Commercial electricity averaged 13.54¢/kWh in May 2026, but demand charges, time-of-use tariffs, labour and downtime can dominate (EIA commercial average).
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWays to reduce running cost safely
- Use Eco or automatic light-source control when the image remains bright enough.
- Turn the projector fully off when finished, but allow its complete cooling cycle before disconnecting power.
- Keep vents clear and clean or replace filters as the manual requires.
- Measure real consumption with a plug-in power meter rather than relying only on the nameplate.
- If buying a lamp model, verify genuine lamp availability and price before purchase.
- Choose LED or laser for frequent use, high mounting or costly downtime.
- At elevations above approximately 4,921 feet, check whether the manufacturer requires High Altitude Mode; Epson notes that this can change fan behavior, noise and power (Epson support guidance).
Which light source is the best value?
Choose a lamp projector when
- The purchase budget is tight and use is occasional.
- Affordable, genuine replacement lamps are available.
- You value high brightness per dollar and accept maintenance.
Choose LED when
- Low maintenance, instant operation and moderate brightness are priorities.
- The projector is used regularly at home.
Choose laser when
- The projector runs daily or for long sessions.
- It is ceiling-mounted or difficult to access.
- Brightness stability, fast startup and reduced downtime justify a higher initial price.
Choose a TV when
- You watch several hours every day and want the simplest operation.
- Daylight performance matters more than cinema-size scale.
- A large TV meets your required image size without projector accessories.
Bottom line
For occasional home use, a projector is usually cheap to power. For daily use, calculate lamp amortization as well as electricity; a low-priced lamp projector can cost more over several years than its purchase price suggests. LED and laser models may have lower maintenance and downtime costs, but their higher upfront price is not automatically recovered through electricity savings. Compare the complete system—projector, screen, mount, audio, lamps, filters, service and viewing hours—rather than watts alone.
