A standard Philips Hue Bridge is designed for up to 50 lights and 12 accessories. Philips lists 63 lights as the hard limit, but that is an absolute ceiling—not a sensible target for a reliable installation. The Hue Bridge Pro is marketed for 150+ lights; its product specification lists 150 bulbs. If the issue is distance between buildings rather than capacity, a second Bridge may be more appropriate than a larger hub.
Hue Bridge capacity at a glance
| Hub or method | Lights | Accessories | How to use the figure |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard Hue Bridge | 50 recommended; 63 hard limit | 12 | Plan around 50 lights, not 63. Philips support specification and capacity FAQ |
| Hue Bridge Pro | 150+ marketed; 150 bulbs in product specification; 186 hard limit in Philips’ FAQ | 50 on product page; another Philips FAQ shows 30+ | Use 150 lights and 50 accessories as conservative planning figures, and confirm current limits with Hue Support if you are near them. Bridge Pro specification |
| Bluetooth-only Hue | Up to 10 lights | Not a Bridge-based system | Suitable for a small room, not a multi-room installation. Philips Bluetooth FAQ |
These are separate counts: an accessory does not consume one light slot, and adding a switch or sensor does not increase the light allowance.
Why 50 and 63 are both published for the standard Bridge
Philips describes 50 lights as the recommended limit and 63 as the hard limit. A system may continue operating after 50, but that does not make the extra capacity a supported design target. Near the ceiling, adding scenes, sensors, simultaneous commands and future bulbs leaves less headroom and can produce slower or unresponsive behavior.
Use 50 as your planning number. Treat 63 only as the point beyond which the Bridge or app may refuse another device; do not design a new installation around it.

What counts as a light or accessory?
Lights
- Each individual Hue bulb counts as one light.
- An integrated Hue fixture counts as its Hue light components according to how it appears in the app.
- Light bars and outdoor Hue fixtures are still lights for capacity planning.
Accessories and controlled lamps
- Dimmer Switches, Tap Dials, smart buttons and Motion Sensors use the accessory allowance.
- A Hue Smart Plug controls an ordinary lamp, but it belongs to the accessory/device category rather than adding another Hue bulb slot.
- Bluetooth lights controlled without a Bridge are not part of that Bridge’s device count until you add them to the Bridge system.
The standard Bridge’s 12-accessory limit can be reached before its 50-light limit in a switch- or sensor-heavy home.
Bridge Pro: a larger hub, with conflicting official figures
Philips markets Bridge Pro for 150+ lights and 50+ accessories, while its current product specification states a maximum of 150 bulbs and 50 accessories. A separate Philips FAQ gives 186 as a hard light limit and displays a 30+ accessory figure in another table. Because those pages do not use identical numbers, plan conservatively around the product specification—150 bulbs and 50 accessories—and verify the live limit with Philips if your design depends on the final few devices.
Bridge Pro also adds MotionAware™ and more processing capacity. It is the cleaner choice when a large home needs one centrally managed set of rooms, scenes and automations.

Is capacity really the problem?
You cannot add another light
Check both counts. A standard Bridge may have fewer than 50 lights but already have 12 accessories. If the app rejects a device near either published limit, remove unused devices or move part of the installation to another Bridge rather than repeatedly retrying the pairing process.

System-wide delays can be consistent with a heavily loaded hub, but also check Bridge and app updates, restart state, and the number of simultaneous automations. Reaching 50 is not a diagnostic proof by itself.
Only a distant room or outdoor area fails
That pattern points more strongly to Zigbee coverage than to device count. Hue describes its network as a Zigbee mesh in which powered Hue lights can repeat the signal. Placement, construction materials, powered-off fixtures and interference determine the result, so there is no guaranteed range.

One light or accessory is unreliable
Investigate that device’s power, distance and pairing before replacing the hub. A single failed accessory is not evidence that the Bridge is overloaded.
Voice control sees only part of the home
With multiple Bridges, Philips says some voice-assistant controls and certain automations remain limited to devices on one Bridge. The Hue app can link Bridges to one account, but a single account does not guarantee that every integration treats them as one system.

Choose one Bridge, Bridge Pro or multiple Bridges
| Situation | Best starting choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| One room, up to 10 lights | Bluetooth | Lowest complexity; it does not provide the full Bridge feature set. |
| Several rooms, no more than about 50 lights and 12 accessories | Standard Hue Bridge | One economical hub for scenes, automations and integrations. |
| More than 50 lights or a large accessory count in one coordinated home | Bridge Pro | Higher advertised capacity and centralized control. |
| Detached garage, separate building or persistent remote dead zone | Second standard Bridge | A separate Zigbee network can solve geography better than a higher-capacity hub. |
| Existing standard Bridge with modest expansion needs | Second standard Bridge | May cost less than replacement if you accept divided features. |
Philips permits multiple Bridges on one account, but they are separate systems for some functions. Use this option when physical separation or incremental expansion matters more than perfectly unified control.

Improve the Zigbee layout before buying hardware
- Place the Bridge as centrally as practical.
- Keep Hue fixtures powered continuously; a wall switch that cuts power removes that light from the mesh.
- Look for thick walls, metal structures, long distances and interference between the Bridge and the affected area.
- Determine whether the failure is localized or affects the whole home.
- Check whether your current Hue app offers a Zigbee-channel change, and follow Philips’ in-app guidance before changing it.
If only an outbuilding is problematic, adding a second Bridge near that area can be more effective than moving to Bridge Pro. That is practical network guidance, not a guarantee of coverage.
How to add a standard Hue Bridge
- Open the Hue app. If the setup prompt does not appear, go to Settings → Devices → blue plus (+).
- Choose to add a Bridge and scan the Bridge’s QR code.
- Follow the on-screen instructions, then add lights and accessories.
Philips’ current instructions are at Hue Bridge setup support.
How to add a Bridge Pro
- Leave Bridge Pro unplugged so its QR code is available to scan.
- In the Hue app, choose to add a Bridge, or use Settings → Devices → blue plus (+).
- Scan the QR code and choose Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
- Connect power with the supplied USB-C cable and complete the in-app setup.
Philips recommends Ethernet for the most reliable connection, although Bridge Pro supports Wi-Fi. See the Bridge Pro setup instructions.

Features you give up with multiple Bridges
- Rooms and devices must be assigned to the correct Bridge.
- Some automations cannot span Bridges as if they were one hub.
- Some voice-assistant controls apply only to devices on a single Bridge.
- Whole-home scenes and troubleshooting become less straightforward.
For a large, centralized home, Bridge Pro avoids that division. For separate buildings or network boundaries, the trade-off may be worthwhile.
Current app requirements
Philips’ current product pages list the Hue app for Android 12.0 or later and iOS 17 or later, along with Apple Home, Alexa, Google Assistant, Samsung SmartThings and Matter support through the Bridge. These requirements and integrations can change, so check the live standard Bridge page or Bridge Pro page before purchase.
Quick Recap
Bottom line for planning
- Design a standard Bridge installation for no more than 50 lights and 12 accessories.
- Do not use the 63-light hard limit as a target.
- Use Bridge Pro’s 150-bulb specification as the conservative large-system figure, despite the separate 150+ and 186 figures on Philips pages.
- Choose a second standard Bridge when distance or building separation is the main problem and divided controls are acceptable.
- Choose Bridge Pro when one centralized, high-capacity Hue system matters most.
