Yamaha RX-A2060: Is This Discontinued Receiver Still Worth Buying?

The Yamaha RX-A2060 remains capable for 4K/60 Atmos systems, but buyers should weigh its legacy connections against missing modern HDMI features and used-unit risk.

The Yamaha RX-A2060 is a discontinued 9.2-channel AVENTAGE receiver that can still make sense for a carefully tested 4K/60 home theater. Its nine amplified channels, Dolby Atmos and DTS:X support, MusicCast, pre-outs, zones, and broad legacy connectivity are useful strengths. The catch is its 2016-era video platform: Yamaha specifies 4K/60 and ARC, not the modern HDMI features needed for 4K/120 gaming, 8K, or eARC-dependent setups.

Consider one used if those limits fit your system and the price reflects its age. Choose a newer receiver if you need current HDMI 2.1 capabilities, a warranty, or newer room-correction options.

What the Yamaha RX-A2060 is

Yamaha introduced the RX-A2060 in 2016 as part of its AVENTAGE RX-A 60 series. Yamaha USA now labels it discontinued, while continuing to host the product specifications, manual, and downloads. The AVENTAGE designation places it above Yamaha’s entry-level receiver lines, with more installation flexibility and connectivity than a basic AVR. Yamaha’s launch announcement identifies the RX-A2060 as a 9.2-channel receiver designed for layouts including 5.1.4 and 7.1.2 Dolby Atmos.

Here, “9.2” means nine amplified speaker channels and two subwoofer outputs; the subwoofer outputs do not power passive subwoofers as two additional amplifier channels. The receiver can run 5.1.4 or 7.1.2 Atmos configurations, but it cannot power a 7.1.4 layout by itself. That arrangement needs more amplified channels.

These are Yamaha’s published specifications for the RX-A2060. Its power figures use different frequency, channel-drive, and distortion conditions, so they should not be treated as directly comparable to every receiver’s advertised watts-per-channel rating. In particular, the two-channel ratings do not mean the unit delivers that power to all nine channels simultaneously. See Yamaha’s complete specifications.

Audio, speakers, and installation flexibility

Surround formats and sound processing

The RX-A2060 supports Dolby Atmos, Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Surround, DTS:X, and DTS-HD Master Audio. Yamaha also includes Cinema DSP 3D, Virtual Presence and Virtual Surround Back processing, Dialogue Level Adjustment, Dialogue Lift, Pure Direct, Compressed Music Enhancer, and gapless playback. Supported high-resolution music formats include DSD, FLAC, WAV, AIFF, and Apple Lossless. These specifications describe supported formats and features, not a guarantee of a particular sound quality in every room or system. Yamaha’s feature list covers the processing and playback options.

Pre-outs and zones

The 7.2-channel pre-outs let you connect external amplification for supported channels, while powered Zone 2 and Zone 3, HDMI Zone 2 and Zone 4 switching, two 12-volt triggers, RS-232C, and IR input/output support more involved installations. The receiver also provides bi-amp capability and Party Mode. These connections can make a used RX-A2060 attractive for a second listening area, a system with external amplifiers, or a room that still uses older component or composite video sources.

Zone availability depends on the source and output path; do not assume every HDMI, network, or surround source can be routed identically to every zone. Check the RX-A2060 owner’s manual for zone assignments, speaker wiring, impedance, ventilation, and setup instructions.

Phono and other connections

A built-in phono input accommodates a compatible turntable alongside the receiver’s digital and analog inputs. The generous legacy connections may be more useful than the video platform’s age suggests if your system includes older sources. Confirm the exact input and output you need before buying; a long specification list does not guarantee that a particular source can be routed to the desired zone.

HDMI, 4K, HDR, and gaming: the key limitation

Yamaha specifies 4K Ultra HD pass-through up to 4K/60p, HDCP 2.2, HDR10, Dolby Vision, HLG, BT.2020 pass-through, HDMI 3D, and ARC. It also lists HDMI upscaling and zone switching. That remains suitable for many conventional 4K/60 televisions, projectors, disc players, and streaming devices.

The published specifications describe a 4K/60-era HDMI platform, not a modern HDMI 2.1 hub. They do not specify 4K/120 gaming or 8K pass-through, and Yamaha lists ARC rather than eARC. If your system depends on those newer capabilities, choose a newer receiver rather than assuming Dolby Vision or 4K support implies them. Yamaha’s video specifications list the supported signal features.

One possible workaround is connecting a gaming console or PC directly to a compatible television and sending audio back to the receiver. Whether that works well depends on the display, audio format, connection path, and required features; ARC is not interchangeable with eARC in every setup. Test the actual source–display–receiver chain, especially if you need a specific HDR mode, high refresh rate, or surround-audio format. Yamaha’s general specifications cannot establish compatibility for every combination of devices.

  • Voice control with Alexa and Google Assistant devices or Siri via AirPlay 2
  • Pandora, Spotify, Napster, SiriusXM, TIDAL, Deezer, Qobuz, Amazon Music HD

MusicCast, wireless playback, and firmware

The RX-A2060 includes Wi-Fi, Wireless Direct, Bluetooth input and output, AirPlay, Spotify Connect, network playback, internet radio, USB audio playback, and control through Yamaha’s app for supported Apple and Android devices. Yamaha described Alexa control in its period product material. Its MusicCast system can distribute audio to up to nine additional rooms using compatible MusicCast products, according to the Yamaha product page.

Hardware support does not guarantee that every streaming or internet-radio service remains available: services, apps, and device compatibility can change independently of the receiver. Yamaha’s USA downloads page lists firmware version 2.86 dated October 4, 2021; that is the latest entry visible on that regional page, not a guarantee about every country’s support listing. The same page lists an internet-radio specification-change document. Check the Yamaha downloads page for your region for firmware and service information.

Before updating a used receiver, check its installed version, read the applicable Yamaha instructions, and do not interrupt power during an update. If you plan a factory reset, record any settings you need first. Use the manual and regional download instructions for the correct update method rather than relying on a menu path that may differ by firmware or region.

YPAO room correction and setup

The RX-A2060 uses YPAO R.S.C., with multipoint measurement, Reflected Sound Control, 3D and angle measurement, 64-bit precision EQ calculation, YPAO Volume, and Adaptive Dynamic Range Control. It is Yamaha’s calibration system for this generation; it should not be confused with newer receiver offerings that may include Audyssey MultEQ XT32 or Dirac Live. The RX-A2060 is not part of the current generation of receivers offering the newest versions of those systems.

  • Voice control with Alexa and Google Assistant devices or Siri via AirPlay 2
  • Pandora, Spotify, Napster, SiriusXM, TIDAL, Deezer, Qobuz, Amazon Music HD

Run calibration with the included YPAO microphone in the seating area, but treat its result as a starting point rather than a substitute for a well-set-up system. Speaker placement, correct wiring and polarity, suitable crossover settings, and subwoofer placement still matter; calibration cannot cure every severe room problem. A used receiver without its microphone remains usable, but automatic calibration is less convenient. Confirm any replacement microphone’s compatibility with Yamaha or the manual rather than assuming another Yamaha microphone will work.

What to check when buying a used RX-A2060

A receiver of this generation may have spent years in a warm cabinet. Inspect the unit and, when possible, test it after it has warmed up. For local pickup, a demonstration with an HDMI source, display, and speaker load is much more informative than confirming that it powers on.

  • Test every HDMI input and both HDMI outputs with a source and display you can use; verify the required 4K and HDR modes.
  • Check all speaker channels and both subwoofer outputs, and listen for distortion, channel imbalance, or relay noise.
  • Test the phono, optical, and coaxial inputs you expect to use.
  • Check Zone 2 and Zone 3 operation if second-room audio matters, and confirm which sources work in those zones.
  • Verify network connection, MusicCast discovery, Bluetooth pairing, and Bluetooth output if needed.
  • Look for overheating, random protection-mode shutdowns at normal listening levels, intermittent HDMI handshakes, heavy dust, or damaged display segments.
  • Confirm that the YPAO microphone and remote are included and functional, or account for their absence.
  • Ask whether returns are accepted; an untested older AVR with no return option carries more risk than a demonstrated unit.

The receiver weighs 37.5 lb and is 18⅝ inches deep before allowing room for cables and ventilation. Measure the shelf and leave appropriate clearance; consult the manual for installation and ventilation guidance.

Used prices vary by location, condition, accessories, shipping, and return protection. One observed pre-owned eBay listing showed $475 for local pickup; that is a single listing, not a market average or reliable going rate. Compare the specific unit’s condition and protections with current receivers before deciding what it is worth. View Yamaha receiver listings on eBay.

RX-A2060 or a newer receiver?

Your priority Better direction
Yamaha DSP, MusicCast, many legacy connections, and a 4K/60 system at a suitably low used price RX-A2060, if the individual unit is fully tested
4K/120 gaming, 8K video, or current HDMI 2.1 switching A newer receiver whose official specifications cover the formats and features you need
eARC or newer room correction Compare current models and confirm their exact specifications
Warranty and more predictable support A new receiver
Dirac Live and four independent subwoofer outputs Consider the Denon AVR-X3800H
Dirac Live and a 9.2-channel alternative Consider the Onkyo TX-RZ50

The Denon AVR-X3800H is a newer alternative with 9.4-channel processing, four independent subwoofer outputs, 8K support, HEOS, and Dirac Live readiness. Denon’s refurbished product page showed $1,299 against a listed $1,799 MSRP and was marked out of stock when checked; treat that as a dated listing, not a current offer. Check Denon’s refurbished AVR-X3800H page.

The Onkyo TX-RZ50 is another 9.2-channel option positioned around modern HDMI features, THX certification, and Dirac Live. For its current specifications, consult Onkyo’s receiver listings. A newer Yamaha AVENTAGE model is the more natural comparison if you want to stay with Yamaha DSP and MusicCast; verify the specific model’s HDMI, channel, and calibration capabilities on Yamaha’s current regional pages before choosing.

There is no single dependable used price that applies to every RX-A2060. If a tested, complete unit costs substantially less than a current receiver and your system is 4K/60, its zones and legacy connectivity can justify the trade-off. If its price approaches a new receiver, warranty and modern video capabilities can matter more than the RX-A2060’s extra flexibility. Condition, included accessories, and return protection should shape the comparison as much as the model number.
