Kitchen cabinet trends in 2025 moved in a practical direction: warmer materials, softer color, cleaner door styles, better storage, and fewer high-maintenance design moves. That is good news for homeowners planning a remodel in 2026, because the strongest cabinet ideas from 2025 are not disposable trends. They are choices that can improve how the kitchen works every day.
On our job sites, the most successful cabinet projects usually start with three questions before anyone picks a paint color: What will the cabinets be made of? How will the kitchen actually be used? What other work will the cabinet plan trigger, such as electrical, plumbing, countertops, flooring, or permits?
That matters because cabinets are one of the largest line items in a kitchen remodel. Current national cabinet installation averages vary by scope. HomeAdvisor lists professional cabinet installation at about $1,935 to $10,767, with an average around $6,193. Homewyse estimates roughly $486 to $736 per cabinet as of May 2026. Home Depot lists cabinet installation labor around $69 to $119 per linear foot. Full kitchen cabinet projects commonly land around $4,000 to $13,000 for basic to midrange replacement work, while larger new-cabinet projects can reach $30,000 or more when custom construction, premium finishes, appliance panels, and specialty storage are included.
The six trends below are the ones we would still take seriously. Each can look current without creating a kitchen that feels dated, fragile, or hard to maintain.

1. Warm Natural Wood Cabinets
Warm wood is one of the clearest cabinet shifts from the last few years. Homeowners are moving away from cold gray kitchens and heavy espresso cabinets, but many still want texture and warmth. Natural wood gives them that without making the kitchen feel dark.
The most requested looks are white oak, rift-cut oak, maple, walnut veneer, and light to medium stains. White oak remains especially popular because it has visible grain without the orange cast that many older oak kitchens had. Rift-cut oak costs more, but the straighter grain gives a cleaner architectural look that works in modern, transitional, and Japandi-influenced kitchens.
Where Warm Wood Works Best
Wood cabinets work well when the home already has natural materials: hardwood floors, stone counters, wood beams, plaster-style finishes, or warm white walls. They are also useful in open floor plans because the kitchen feels more like built-in furniture and less like a separate utility zone.
For many remodels, we like wood on the island or lower cabinets and a painted or neutral perimeter above. That keeps the room from becoming too wood-heavy, especially if the floors are already oak. If the floor and cabinets are both wood, the undertones need to be checked in the actual house. A sample that looks beautiful in a showroom can turn yellow, pink, or muddy under warm under-cabinet lighting.

Cost and Durability Notes
Solid wood cabinet doors are not automatically better than well-built veneer or engineered options. In fact, many premium slab wood doors use veneers over stable cores to reduce movement. Full solid-wood custom cabinetry can be expensive and more sensitive to humidity changes.
For a strong value, consider plywood cabinet boxes with wood veneer doors or hardwood frames. Plywood boxes usually outperform low-grade particleboard in moisture-prone kitchens, especially near sinks, dishwashers, and exterior walls. The grade, edge sealing, finish quality, and installer skill still matter.
Expect warm wood to price above basic painted stock cabinets. Stock and RTA cabinets are usually the lowest-cost option. Semi-custom sits in the middle. Custom work rises quickly when you add rift-cut veneer, inset doors, furniture-style ends, matching panels, and specialty stains. A semi-custom wood-look kitchen might fit in the $100 to $650 per linear foot installed range, while high-end custom cabinetry can move toward $800 per linear foot or more when design, fabrication, delivery, and installation are included.
2. Soft Neutrals and Earthy Cabinet Colors
White cabinets are not gone, but stark white is no longer the only default. The stronger 2025 cabinet colors are warmer and softer: off-white, mushroom, greige, taupe, clay, putty, sage, olive, blue-gray, and muted navy. These colors feel finished without shouting.

NKBA’s 2026 Kitchen Trends Report surveyed 634 North American kitchen and bath professionals. In that report, 96% identified neutrals as popular kitchen colors, followed by greens at 86% and blues at 78%. The same trend direction shows color moving to islands, backsplashes, wallpaper, and accessories rather than every perimeter cabinet.
That lines up with what we see in the field. Homeowners want personality, but they also want resale flexibility. A kitchen with warm neutral perimeter cabinets and a green, blue, walnut, or charcoal island often satisfies both goals.
Painted Cabinets: What to Specify
Painted cabinets can be durable, but the details matter. For smooth painted finishes, MDF center panels are often a smart choice because they are more stable than solid wood panels and less likely to show seasonal movement. Hardwood frames can still be used for strength and clean edges. Shop-finished doors usually perform better than site-painted doors because the finish is applied in a controlled environment.

For families with kids, pets, or heavy cooking habits, we talk honestly about dark painted lowers and islands. They can look excellent, but they show chips, dust, fingerprints, and pet hair more easily than mid-tone colors. Touch-ups are also more visible on deep blue, black, and saturated green than on putty or soft white.
Resale Advice
If resale within five years is likely, keep the expensive cabinet runs quieter. Use color on the island, a beverage center, a hutch-style cabinet, or the backsplash. Hardware, lighting, and wall color are easier to change later than a full cabinet finish.
For a long-term home, a well-chosen earthy color can be a good decision. The key is testing large samples next to the flooring, countertop, backsplash, and adjacent room paint. We do not approve cabinet color from a tiny chip under showroom lights. We want to see it in morning light, evening light, and under the actual bulbs planned for the kitchen.
3. Two-Tone Cabinets and Contrast Islands
Two-tone cabinets are popular because they let homeowners add contrast without committing the entire kitchen to a bold finish. The most common versions are painted perimeter cabinets with a wood island, wood lower cabinets with painted uppers, or a neutral kitchen with a darker island.
This trend works because it solves a real design problem. A kitchen made from one finish can feel flat, especially in open-concept homes with large cabinet runs. A second finish helps define the island, cooking wall, pantry wall, or beverage zone.

Reliable combinations include warm white perimeter cabinets with a white oak island, greige perimeter cabinets with a walnut island, soft mushroom cabinets with a muted green island, and white oak lowers with off-white uppers. For a more tailored look, the hood cabinet, tall pantry bank, or coffee bar can carry the accent finish instead of the island.
Be careful with high contrast. Black-and-white kitchens can work, but they need the right architecture, lighting, and countertop selection. If the contrast is too sharp, the kitchen can feel more graphic than warm. We usually recommend pulling one undertone through the whole palette: warm metals, warm stone veining, wood flooring, or a backsplash that ties the finishes together.
Budget Impact
Two-tone cabinetry can increase cost if it requires two finish processes, separate stain approvals, custom end panels, or extra design time. The increase is usually manageable in semi-custom lines, especially if the manufacturer offers both finishes as standard options. It gets more expensive when the second finish is a custom stain, custom paint match, or premium wood species.
For budget control, make the island the upgraded finish and keep the perimeter simpler. That gives the kitchen a custom look without applying the highest-cost material to every cabinet box, panel, and filler.

4. Slab Doors and Slim-Shaker Profiles
Ornate raised-panel doors are taking a back seat. The strongest cabinet door styles now are slab doors and slim-Shaker profiles. Both are cleaner, simpler, and easier to pair with modern appliances, stone counters, and understated hardware.
A slab door has a flat face with no frame profile. It works especially well with wood veneer, matte painted finishes, and integrated pulls. A slim Shaker keeps the familiar frame-and-panel look but narrows the rails and stiles for a lighter, more current profile. It is a good choice for homeowners who want something updated but not ultra-modern.

How to Choose Between Them
Choose slab doors when the kitchen is modern, minimalist, or heavily focused on grain direction. They also work well in smaller kitchens because the uninterrupted surfaces reduce visual noise. Choose slim Shaker when the house has traditional bones, visible millwork, farmhouse elements, or transitional furniture.
Cleaning is another factor. Slab doors are easier to wipe down because there are fewer inside corners. Shaker doors collect more dust and cooking residue around the rails, although the slim profile helps. In a busy kitchen, that maintenance difference is noticeable.

Door style is only one part of cabinet quality. We look closely at box material, drawer construction, hinges, slides, joinery, and finish. A premium-looking door on a weak box is still a weak cabinet system.
Good cabinet upgrades include soft-close hinges, full-extension drawer slides, solid drawer boxes, plywood boxes, finished end panels, and properly installed fillers and scribes. If the budget forces a choice, we would rather see a homeowner spend on better boxes, drawer hardware, and installation than spend everything on a trendy door profile.
Measurement also matters. In older homes, we prefer to measure after demolition when possible because walls are rarely straight and floors are rarely level. If cabinets must be ordered earlier, the design should include realistic filler and scribe allowances. A tight showroom drawing that ignores out-of-square walls can become an expensive field problem.
5. Concealed Storage and Paneled Appliances
The best cabinet trend is the one that makes the kitchen easier to use. Concealed storage is not just a style choice. It keeps counters clear, reduces visual clutter, and helps each zone work better.
Useful concealed storage includes deep drawer bases, pull-out trays, tray dividers near ovens, trash and recycling pull-outs near the sink or prep zone, appliance garages, pantry cabinets, blind-corner systems, charging drawers, and drawer inserts for utensils, spices, knives, and small tools. Paneled dishwashers and refrigerators can also help the kitchen feel more built-in, especially in open living spaces.
Plan Interiors Before Door Style
We plan cabinet interiors before we finalize the exterior style. Drawers should be near prep zones. Pots and pans should live near the range or cooktop. Trash should be near the sink and main prep surface. Tray dividers belong near ovens. pantry pull-outs should match the way the household shops, not just the way the cabinet catalog looks.
Appliance garages are useful, but they need enough depth, outlet planning, and door clearance. A coffee station with a lift-up or pocket door can be excellent if the appliance cords, water access, and landing space are handled correctly. If it is squeezed into the wrong corner, it becomes an expensive cabinet that stays open all day.
Electrical and Permit Considerations
Cabinet changes can trigger electrical work. Under-cabinet lighting, new outlets, appliance garages, microwave drawers, relocated ranges, and island changes may require permits and inspections depending on local code and project scope. The 2024 IRC includes requirements for kitchen receptacles and power distribution, and island and peninsula receptacle rules have changed in recent code cycles. Local adoption varies, so the right answer is the one enforced by your jurisdiction.
Our recommendation is simple: discuss permit scope during the estimate, not after demolition. That helps homeowners compare bids accurately. One contractor may include electrical rough-in, permit coordination, inspection scheduling, and drywall repair. Another may price only cabinet boxes and installation. Those are not the same scope.
Sequencing matters too. Cabinet installation has to coordinate with countertop templating, electrical rough-in, plumbing rough-in, backsplash work, final appliance delivery, and flooring transitions. Countertop templating usually happens after base cabinets are installed and secured. If an appliance panel, sink base, or end panel is wrong, it can delay counters and push the whole kitchen schedule.
6. Limited Display: Glass Fronts, Reeded Texture, Open Shelves, and Cutouts
Display storage is back, but the best versions are restrained. Instead of removing every upper cabinet, homeowners are mixing opaque cabinets with one glass-front run, a hutch-style cabinet, a short open shelf zone, reeded or fluted inserts, or small decorative cabinet cutouts.
This works because a kitchen benefits from some visual relief. Too many solid doors can feel heavy, especially on a long wall. A small amount of display storage can make the kitchen feel more personal and less like a wall of boxes.

Where Display Cabinets Make Sense
Glass-front cabinets work best for dishes that are used often enough to stay clean and organized. Reeded glass is more forgiving than clear glass because it softens the view inside. A hutch-style cabinet can be a strong choice for serving pieces, coffee supplies, or barware. Open shelves work best in short sections near a coffee bar, range wall, or window.
Decorative cutouts can be interesting in the right house, especially when they echo older millwork or handmade details. They should be used carefully. A small design feature can age well; a whole kitchen built around a novelty shape usually does not.
When to Avoid Open Shelving
Avoid large open shelf runs if the household does not want daily upkeep. Dust, cooking grease, mismatched dishes, and visual clutter build quickly. Open shelving also reduces closed storage, which many kitchens cannot afford to lose.
For most homes, one display zone is enough. A pair of glass-front uppers, two short shelves, or one reeded cabinet section will usually age better than replacing all uppers with shelves. If storage is already tight, keep the upper cabinets and add display through lighting, hardware, backsplash, or a small hutch area instead.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat These Cabinet Trends Really Cost
Cabinet budgets vary because the word cabinet can mean many things: boxes only, cabinets plus installation, cabinets plus hardware, or a full kitchen package with demolition, repair, trim, panels, electrical, countertops, and finish work. Before comparing prices, make sure every bid includes the same scope.
For planning purposes, stock or RTA cabinets are the lowest-cost route. Semi-custom cabinets are the middle ground and often give the best balance of fit, finish, and options. Full custom cabinetry is the right choice when the house needs special dimensions, inset construction, furniture-grade finishes, unusual wood species, or highly specific storage.
| Budget Item | Typical 2026 Range | What Changes the Price |
|---|---|---|
| Professional cabinet installation | About $1,935 to $10,767, average around $6,193 | Kitchen size, cabinet count, removal, trim, wall repair, installer availability |
| Per-cabinet installation estimate | About $486 to $736 per cabinet | Cabinet type, layout complexity, fillers, crown, panels, leveling |
| Labor by linear foot | About $69 to $119 per linear foot for installation labor | Market, scope, cabinet height, trim, site conditions |
| Installed stock or semi-custom work | Often around $100 to $650 per linear foot | Material, finish, hardware, layout, delivery, installation |
| Higher-end or custom work | Can approach $800 per linear foot or more | Inset doors, premium hardwoods, appliance panels, custom storage, specialty finishes |
| Full kitchen cabinet project | Commonly $4,000 to $13,000 basic to midrange; $6,000 to $30,000+ for broader projects | Cabinet tier, kitchen size, demolition, repairs, electrical, plumbing, counters, permits |
Do not forget the surrounding costs. Hardware, knobs, pulls, soft-close upgrades, drawer organizers, drywall touch-up, paint, backsplash repair, countertops, sink reconnection, electrical work, plumbing changes, and permits may be separate. These items are where a low cabinet number can become a much larger remodel number.
Labor also changes with site conditions. Old kitchens often need shimming, planing, filler adjustments, scribe molding, drywall repair, and floor-level corrections. Paneled appliances require careful coordination. Built-in refrigerators, panel-ready dishwashers, microwave drawers, ranges, and hoods should be selected before cabinets are ordered. A half-inch appliance mistake can affect cabinet dimensions, panel sizes, clearances, and countertop layout.

Some cabinet work is reasonable for a skilled homeowner. Other work should be handled by a professional because the risk is not just cosmetic. Cabinets affect countertops, appliances, electrical, plumbing, safety, and long-term durability.
Reasonable DIY Cabinet Work
DIY can make sense for changing knobs and pulls, adjusting hinges, adding simple drawer organizers, painting a small vanity, installing a short open shelf, or assembling a basic garage or laundry cabinet. A careful homeowner can also handle some RTA cabinet assembly if the layout is simple and the walls are reasonably straight.
Even then, use the right tools. Cabinet work requires accurate layout lines, stud finding, level reference points, clamps, proper fasteners, and patience. Upper cabinets need secure fastening into framing or approved blocking. A cabinet full of dishes is not light.
Work That Usually Needs a Pro
Hire a pro for full kitchen cabinet replacement, custom or semi-custom installation, stone countertop coordination, wall oven or built-in appliance cabinets, paneled appliances, crown and scribe work, major layout changes, plumbing relocation, electrical changes, and any project involving structural uncertainty.

Permits also need to be handled correctly. Replacing cabinets in the exact same footprint may be treated differently than moving a sink, adding under-cabinet lighting, changing island wiring, relocating appliances, or opening walls. Local requirements vary, so ask during the estimate and make sure the bid says who is responsible for permits and inspections.
How to Choose a Trend That Will Age Well
The safest approach is to make the permanent, expensive parts durable and flexible, then use trend-forward choices in places that are easier to change. That usually means strong cabinet boxes, good drawer slides, quality hinges, a practical layout, and a finish that works with the house.
For many homeowners, the best cabinet plan is a neutral or warm wood perimeter with one stronger accent: a contrast island, glass-front hutch, specialty hardware, backsplash color, or display shelf. This keeps the kitchen current without making every surface depend on one trend.
Recommended Free Tools
Before ordering, confirm appliance specifications, door swings, filler panels, countertop overhangs, outlet locations, sink size, trash pull-out location, and clearances around islands and walkways. NKBA planning guidelines are useful because they keep the kitchen functional, not just attractive. Clearances, landing areas, and work zones affect how the room feels every day.
Finally, look at the home, not just the inspiration photo. Flooring undertones, ceiling height, natural light, trim color, adjacent rooms, and the age of the house should all influence the cabinet choice. A trend works best when it looks like it belongs there.
Bottom Line
The best 2025 kitchen cabinet trends are still relevant in 2026 because they solve real problems. Warm wood adds texture. Soft neutrals and earthy colors give personality without hurting resale. Two-tone kitchens create depth. Slab and slim-Shaker doors clean up the visual lines. Concealed storage makes the kitchen easier to live in. Limited display adds character without sacrificing function.
The part homeowners should not skip is the construction behind the look. Cabinet boxes, hardware, installation quality, clearances, lead-safe demolition, electrical planning, and permit scope determine whether the kitchen still feels good five years from now. Pick the style you like, but build the system correctly.
Frequently Asked Questions
What kitchen cabinet colors are trending in 2025 and still popular in 2026?
Warm whites, mushroom, greige, taupe, sage, olive, blue-gray, muted navy, and natural wood tones are the strongest choices. NKBA’s 2026 research shows neutrals, greens, and blues remain especially popular.
Are white kitchen cabinets going out of style?
No. Stark cool white is less dominant, but warm white and soft off-white cabinets are still practical and resale-friendly. Many homeowners now pair them with a wood or colored island for more depth.
How much does it cost to install new kitchen cabinets in 2026?
Professional cabinet installation commonly ranges from about $1,935 to $10,767, with an average around $6,193. Full kitchen cabinet projects often run $4,000 to $13,000 for basic to midrange work and $30,000 or more for larger custom projects.
Do I need a permit to replace kitchen cabinets?
It depends on the local jurisdiction and scope. A same-footprint cabinet swap may be simple, but moving outlets, adding under-cabinet lighting, relocating plumbing, changing an island, or opening walls can trigger permits and inspections.

Both can be good for resale if they fit the house and are well built. Warm natural wood and soft painted neutrals are usually safer than very bold full-kitchen colors. A contrast island is a good place for a more personal finish.
What cabinet upgrades are worth the money during a remodel?
Prioritize plywood boxes where moisture is a concern, soft-close hinges, full-extension drawer slides, deep drawer bases, trash pull-outs, tray dividers, pantry storage, and accurate professional installation. These upgrades affect daily use more than decorative details.
