Best iRobot Roomba Robot Vacuums for March 2025

The Roomba Combo j9+ is the best all-purpose pick for March 2025, while the s9+ leads vacuum-only cleaning and the j9+ handles clutter best. Here is how every major model differs.

March 2025 verdict: The Roomba Combo j9+ is the best all-purpose choice for most homes that want vacuuming, mopping, obstacle recognition and automated dirt-and-water handling. Choose the Roomba s9+ when carpet, pet hair and corner cleaning matter more than mopping; choose the Roomba j9+ for a vacuum-only robot that is better around cables, toys and other clutter. The Combo i5+ is the value pick if you accept swapping bins, while the Combo j7+ is a sensible discounted option for mixed floors because its mop lifts over carpet.

Date note: This is a U.S. buying snapshot for March 2025. iRobot announced a new range on March 11, 2025, with preorders beginning March 18, so the 105, 205, Plus 405 and Plus 505 should be treated as newly announced products rather than proven replacements for independently tested models.

Quick picks

Best for Model Why it stands out Main compromise
Most homes Roomba Combo j9+ Strong vacuuming, retractable mop, room mapping, object recognition and Auto-Fill Clean Base High price; the dock and mop still need care
Vacuum-only cleaning Roomba s9+ D-shaped body, strong carpet and hair pickup, excellent wall and corner reach Older navigation, large dock and uncertain remaining stock
Cluttered homes Roomba j9+ Camera-based recognition and modern mapping with self-emptying May not match the s9+ for maximum carpet or hair pickup
Mixed floors at a discount Roomba Combo j7+ Retractable mop arm keeps the pad off carpet Less powerful and less automated than the j9 generation
Lowest-cost self-emptying Combo Roomba Combo i5+ Interchangeable vacuum and Combo bins with an emptying dock Manual bin changes and basic obstacle avoidance
New budget design to watch Roomba 105 series Entry-level 2025 architecture and AutoEmpty or Combo variants Launch specifications preceded meaningful independent testing
Compact-dock concept Roomba 205 DustCompactor Compresses debris inside the robot instead of using a large external emptying dock Early testing raised navigation and cleaning concerns

What “best” means for a Roomba

There is no single best Roomba. Vacuuming performance, mopping, obstacle avoidance, dock automation, price and apartment-friendly size pull the decision in different directions. A vacuum-only s9+ can be a better purchase than a newer Combo model for a carpeted home, while a j9+ can be preferable to the s9+ when loose cables and pet bowls are common.

Independent evidence also matters. Tom’s Guide measured a 97% cleanup rate for the s9+ in its hair test; that is that publication’s test result, not a universal rating. Tom’s Guide’s s9 review and RTINGS’ j9+ testing are more useful than comparing advertising claims such as “times the suction” across different test methods.

Vacuum-only or Combo?

Vacuum-only models

The s9+ and j9+ put all of their hardware and operating time into dry debris pickup. They make the most sense when you already mop manually, have mostly carpet, or want to avoid wet-pad maintenance.

Combo models

“Combo” does not describe one standard mopping system:

  • Combo i5+: You replace the vacuum bin with a Combo bin to mop. It is inexpensive to operate but not hands-off.
  • Combo j7+: A retractable arm lifts the mop pad onto the robot when carpet is detected, avoiding the need to remove a plate before a mixed-floor run.
  • Combo j9+: Adds stronger vacuuming and a dock that can empty debris and refill the robot’s water tank.
  • Combo 10 Max: Uses an AutoWash dock that washes and dries the pad. It is a premium 2024 model, not the automatic default for this March 2025 guide.
  • 105 and 205 Combo models: New 2025 designs whose long-term cleaning and reliability were not established at launch.

Even the best Combo is a maintenance cleaner, not a substitute for scrubbing dried food, grout or stuck-on stains by hand.

Feature differences that affect daily use

Object avoidance and mapping

j7 and j9 robots use camera-based recognition intended to identify common hazards. That is valuable around cords, toys and pet bowls, but it is not a guarantee against every object or a fresh accident. Older i-series, s-series and entry models generally need more floor preparation. Some 2025 models use lidar-oriented navigation for mapping; lidar can improve route planning without automatically providing j7/j9-level object recognition. See the model-specific testing from RTINGS before assuming a feature applies to every Roomba.

Carpets, rugs and thresholds

  • Check whether the model lifts its mop or merely avoids carpet in mop mode.
  • Tassels, curled rug edges and tall thresholds can stop a robot even when its map is accurate.
  • Measure transitions between rooms and confirm the dock can be reached from the flooring where it sits.
  • Repeated-pass or dirt-detection settings can improve pickup but use more battery and time.

Pets

Separate hair pickup from pet-safety claims. The s9+ has strong independent hair results, while j9-family recognition is more useful for toys and bowls. No robot should be called pet-waste-proof: remove fresh waste and loose objects before every scheduled run.

App and smart-home controls

Room labels, selective room cleaning, schedules, no-go zones, no-mop zones, dirt intelligence and voice-assistant support vary by model, region and firmware. iRobot’s support documentation lists model-dependent features and parts at its compatibility page. Wi-Fi coverage is required for app control; if a map becomes corrupted or the robot loses its position, a map restore or new mapping run may be necessary.

Best overall: Roomba Combo j9+

Best for: Homes wanting one premium vacuum-and-mop system.

iRobot Roomba 105 Vac Robot Vacuum with AutoEmpty Dock - Self-Empties for 75 Days, Easy to use, Intense Power-Lifting Suction, LiDAR Navigation, Multi-Surface Cleaning, Cleans in Neat Rows
  • UP TO 75 DAYS HANDS-FREE CLEANING. Dirt and dust stay gone because it empties into the AutoEmpty dock with a bag that traps 99% of allergens as small as 0.7 microns- That means no mess or cloud of dust when you empty it- Just drop the used bag into the trash and put a new one in the base.
  • DEVOURS DIRT WITH 70X MORE POWER-LIFTING SUCTION. 3-Stage Cleaning includes 70X more power-lifting suction*, a Multi-Surface brush, and Edge-Sweeping brush to devour dirt and dust bunnies and leave floors barefoot clean *As compared to Roomba 600 series robots

  • FULLY CUSTOM & TARGETED CLEANING. Schedule and target rooms based on your daily routine and adjust the number of cleaning passes and levels of suction power.
  • EASY-TO-USE ROOMBA HOME APP. Simply tap to set a custom clean, get time estimates, check on the filter life, or create keep-out zones to avoid specific areas.

The Combo j9+ balances strong vacuuming, room-specific cleaning, camera-based obstacle recognition and a retractable mop. Its Clean Base can automatically empty debris and refill the robot’s water tank, reducing daily intervention. Tom’s Guide found strong overall performance in its independent review.

It is not a rotating-mop scrubber, and the dock still needs water, pad and tray care. Buy it when those conveniences matter more than the lowest cost or the most aggressive mopping available from competitors. Skip it if you have no practical space for a large dock or mainly need deep carpet cleaning.

Best vacuum-only and pet-hair choice: Roomba s9+

Best for: Carpet, pet hair and wall-edge or corner cleaning.

The s9+’s D-shaped body and wide front architecture give it an advantage along walls and into corners. Tom’s Guide recorded a 97% hair-test cleanup rate, and the s9-versus-j9 comparison from RTINGS helps explain why it remains a vacuum specialist.

Its platform is older, its dock is bulky and its obstacle avoidance is less sophisticated than the j7/j9 generation. Remaining units may be clearance or refurbished stock, so verify warranty, battery condition, included dock and replacement-part availability before buying. It is a strong choice at deep clearance pricing when vacuuming is the priority, but a poor fit for cluttered floors or anyone requiring mopping.

Best premium vacuum-only alternative: Roomba j9+

Best for: Homes with cables, toys, bowls and other everyday obstacles.

The j9+ combines modern mapping, camera-based object recognition and self-emptying with stronger airflow than older i-series models, according to RTINGS. It is the better premium vacuum-only recommendation when avoiding obstacles matters more than the s9+’s maximum carpet and corner performance.

  • STRONG SUCTION SERIOUS MOPPING. Devours messes from crumbs to pawprints with 70x more suction*, DualClean Mop Pads with PerfectEdge, SmartScrub, a multi-surface rubber brush, and edge-sweeping brush. *As compared to Roomba 600 series robots
  • CLEARVIEW PRO LIDAR. Expertly maps your home to maximize coverage and clean thoroughly, day or night- Plus, specialized sensors ensure Roomba robot won't take a tumble down stairs.
  • PRECISIONVISION AI TECHNOLOGY. Immediately recognizes cords, socks, even pet waste, and swiftly navigates around them. Identifies wet & dry messes ahead and repeats cleaning passes for a more thorough clean.
  • AUTOWASH DOCK DOES IT ALL. 75 days of auto-emptying, 4 weeks of mopping and pad washing*, continuous pad refreshing, and heated pad drying ensure an ultra-effective clean day after day. *Based on 1 mopping run per week

It does not wash or mop, and its newer intelligence does not make floor preparation unnecessary. Choose it over the s9+ for navigation; choose the s9+ for a vacuum-focused home where cleaning performance and edge reach dominate.

Best mixed-floor bargain: Roomba Combo j7+

Best for: Homes with rugs that still want occasional mopping.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The j7+’s defining feature is its retractable mop arm: the pad lifts away from carpet instead of requiring the owner to remove a plate. It also offers the j-family’s object recognition. It is worth considering when substantially cheaper than the Combo j9+ and when the retractable design solves a real mixed-floor problem.

Vacuuming power and dock automation trail the j9 generation. Buy only after checking that the discounted unit includes the correct dock and that bags, pads, rollers and batteries remain available. Read the Tom’s Guide review for its hair-test context.

Best value vacuum-and-mop: Roomba Combo i5+

Best for: Uncluttered homes, mostly hard floors and occasional damp cleaning.

The i5+ uses one bin for vacuuming and a separate Combo bin for mopping, while its dock empties dirt automatically. That keeps the entry price below the j-series, but the owner must swap bins, attach and wash the pad, refill water and clear the floor. Its navigation and object avoidance are also more basic.

It is a good value only when you accept that manual involvement. It is not the right choice for autonomous mop management, frequent pet-toy obstacles or aggressive scrubbing.

New 2025 Roombas: what was announced and what was proven

iRobot announced eight products on March 11, 2025; contemporary reporting said North American and select European preorders began March 18. The announcement and timing are documented in iRobot’s media kit and Tom’s Guide’s launch report. A guide published before March 18 should not describe these as ordinary in-stock choices.

Model Announced U.S. starting price March 2025 status How to treat it
Roomba 105 Combo $319 New 2025 range Budget model to watch; wait for independent testing or use a strong return policy
Roomba 205 DustCompactor Combo $469 New 2025 range Compact-dock concept; early evidence is mixed
Roomba Plus 405 Combo + AutoWash Dock $799 New 2025 range Announced price, not a tested recommendation
Roomba Plus 505 Combo + AutoWash Dock $999 New 2025 range Announced price, not a tested recommendation

Roomba 105 series

The 105 line was positioned as an entry-level design with substantially increased suction versus earlier budget Roombas, with AutoEmpty and Combo variants. Newer does not mean better until independent carpet, hair, navigation and reliability testing is available.

Roomba 205 DustCompactor

The 205 compresses debris inside the robot rather than relying on a large external Clean Base. That may suit an apartment, but more debris remains in the robot and the added mechanism increases complexity. TechRadar’s early review raised concerns about navigation, cleaning and dock or cable interactions. Do not buy it solely for the advertised bin capacity.

Self-emptying is not maintenance-free

Every dock reduces work rather than eliminating it. Plan to:

  • Replace or empty disposable dust bags.
  • Refill clean-water tanks and empty dirty-water tanks on wash-capable docks.
  • Wash and dry mop pads and clean the dock tray or drainage areas.
  • Remove hair from rollers, side brushes and wheel assemblies.
  • Clean sensors and charging contacts.
  • Replace filters, rollers, pads, bags and eventually the battery.

Place the dock on a level floor with a nearby outlet, adequate side and front clearance, room to remove tanks or bags, and Wi-Fi coverage. Keep water-sensitive flooring away from possible spills.

When a Roomba is the wrong purchase

  • Choose a conventional cordless vacuum if you need immediate deep cleaning or frequent spot work.
  • Choose a dedicated mop or a competitor with spinning or roller pads if scrubbing is your priority.
  • Choose a simpler, cheaper robot for a small, uncluttered space where mapping is unnecessary.
  • Consider a non-camera model if privacy concerns outweigh obstacle-recognition benefits.

For any clearance or refurbished Roomba, verify the exact model number, warranty, battery condition, included dock, region compatibility and availability of bags, filters, rollers and wheels. The “+” suffix generally indicates an automatic dirt-disposal dock, not a wash-and-dry system.

March 2025 decision tree

  1. Need the strongest Roomba vacuum focus? Choose the s9+ if you can accept its age and weaker obstacle avoidance.
  2. Need obstacle recognition around clutter? Choose the j9+ for vacuum-only cleaning.
  3. Need vacuuming and mopping with the least routine intervention? Choose the Combo j9+.
  4. Need a cheaper Combo? Choose the Combo i5+ if swapping bins is acceptable, or a discounted Combo j7+ when rugs require a lifting mop.
  5. Want the newest budget architecture? Wait for independent 105 and 205 testing, or buy only from a seller with an easy return policy.
