It is different from a circulating fountain, which uses a powered pump. Either way, automatic refilling does not replace regular cleaning or fresh-water checks.
How does a self-filling pet water bowl work?
A gravity dispenser has two parts: a water-filled reservoir and a lower bowl. As a pet drinks, the water level drops and air enters the reservoir. Gravity releases water through the outlet until the bowl reaches its designed level; the water then covers the outlet, helping prevent continuous draining. Torus Pet explains this balance of gravity and partial vacuum in its description of the mechanism (Torus Pet: How It Works).
Because the refill is driven by gravity rather than a pump, a gravity station does not need electricity. A circulating fountain is a different design: its pump moves water through the unit, and it typically has its own filter and cleaning requirements.
Gravity dispenser or powered fountain?
| Feature | Gravity self-filling bowl | Powered fountain |
|---|---|---|
| How water is supplied | Stored water flows into the basin as its level drops; air pressure helps stop flow at the designed level. | A powered pump circulates water through the fountain. |
| Electricity | Not required for PetSafe’s Healthy Pet Water Station (PetSafe product specifications). | Required for the pump described in PetSafe’s Drinkwell fountain instructions (PetSafe Drinkwell cleaning instructions). |
| Filter | Optional for the Healthy Pet Water Station; its compatible filter is PFD17-11867 (PetSafe product specifications). | Follow the specific fountain’s instructions for its filter and pump. |
| Main practical trade-off | Simple, unplugged water storage and refill. | Circulating water, with a pump to maintain and clean. |
Running water is not an established health requirement for dogs. In AKC’s fountain comparison, Carlo Siracusa, DVM, Associate Professor of Clinical Animal Behavior and Welfare at the University of Pennsylvania, says, “I’m unaware of evidence supporting the theory that dogs prefer running water.” Individual pets may still have their own preferences (AKC: Best Dog Water Fountains).

How to choose capacity and materials
Match reservoir size to the animals using it, their water consumption, and how often you can refill it. PetSafe lists its Healthy Pet Water Station in 0.5-gallon (2 L), 1-gallon (4 L), and 2.5-gallon (9.5 L) sizes. Its published duration estimates below are manufacturer estimates, not guaranteed intervals: actual use varies with species, body size, weather, diet, and the number of pets.
| PetSafe station size | 10-pound pet | 50-pound dog | 100-pound dog |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0.5 gallon (2 L) | About 6 days | About 1 day | About 1 day |
| 1 gallon (4 L) | About 12 days | About 2 days | About 1 day |
| 2.5 gallons (9.5 L) | About 31 days | About 5 days | About 2 days |
These examples come from PetSafe’s product information; the values are estimates for the listed pet weights, not a promise that water will last that long in every household (PetSafe product specifications).

Check the bowl and base
The Healthy Pet Water Station has a removable stainless-steel bowl and a BPA-free reservoir that locks into place. When comparing other options, consider whether the bowl can be removed for washing and whether the base is stable enough for the animal using it. AKC describes stainless steel as durable and hygienic, while noting that plastic is lightweight and economical; material alone does not determine how easily a particular unit can be cleaned or tipped (AKC: Best Dog Water Fountains).
Are filtered pet bowls healthier?
A filter can be useful for a specific product’s water-flow or taste design, but it should not be presented as a proven health upgrade. VCA says there are no scientific studies showing that filtered water produces significantly better health outcomes than city or well water. It emphasizes providing a consistent source of fresh, clean drinking water (VCA: Water for Your Pet).

Cleaning and routine checks
Self-filling describes how water reaches the bowl, not how the bowl stays clean. Water-contacting containers can accumulate residue, so clean the bowl and reservoir regularly, inspect the water level, and refill with fresh water. VCA recommends regularly washing bowls with hot, soapy water (VCA: Water for Your Pet).

- For a powered fountain: PetSafe advises cleaning Drinkwell fountains monthly, or every two weeks in multi-pet households; that cleaning includes the pump, with filter care according to the fountain instructions (PetSafe Drinkwell cleaning instructions).
Use the schedule for your exact model if it differs from general guidance. A clean bowl also makes it easier to notice a change in how much your pet drinks.

A gravity station is a practical fit when you want stored water to replenish a basin without plugging in a device. Choose capacity based on actual household use rather than assuming the manufacturer’s duration estimate will apply, and prioritize a stable unit with parts you can access and wash. Choose a fountain instead if you specifically want circulation and are prepared to maintain its pump and follow its filter schedule.
