The most useful IKEA closet hacks start with a tape measure, not a shopping cart. Measure the space and the clothes you need to store, then use a layout that makes every shelf, hanging section and drawer fit your room and routine. These 25 ideas adapt IKEA’s planning guidance to real closets; they are not claims of tested or guaranteed space savings.
Plan the closet around the room
1. Measure height, width and depth first
Record the closet’s usable height, width and depth before choosing a wardrobe frame or organizer. IKEA’s US guidance lists PAX frames in widths of 20, 30 or 39 inches, heights of 79 or 93 inches, and depths of 14 or 23 inches. Those are system dimensions, not a promise that a frame will suit your room; doors can change the total footprint. Check your local IKEA listing for the exact product dimensions.
2. Mark the proposed footprint on the floor
Use painter’s tape to outline the frame and, if applicable, the door swing or track area. This simple check can reveal a blocked walkway or a door that cannot open fully before you commit to a layout.
3. Account for obstructions and unusual ceilings
Measure around pipes, radiators, recesses and sloped ceilings, not just the largest clear rectangle. IKEA advises taking these features into account when planning; a frame that fits the headline width may still conflict with an obstruction or reduced ceiling height.

- SPACE SAVE: The design allows for easy hanging with cubby spaces as well as side pockets for smaller items that are often hard to find. It makes organizing so easy but does not take up much space at the same time.
- CONVENIENCE: Six compartments to set out your clothes ahead of time. Check the ten-day weather forecast, and set out your clothes for the week in this terrific hanging sorter. Saves you lots of time in the morning.
- SUITABLE: The closet hanging storage allows you to have more space in your closet. It has six shelves units. This shelf organizer is suit for people who need more storage, but they do not have space in their closet. Also, it is for people who want to use their space more efficiently.
- WARM TIPS: Before buying, measure the distance between your closet rod and the floor to see which model would be best for you.
4. Check the door arrangement
Hinged doors need room to swing. Sliding doors need room for their track and may affect access to the wardrobe interior. An open layout avoids door clearance but leaves contents visible; choose based on the room’s circulation and how much visual concealment you want.
5. Inventory what the closet must hold
Before assigning shelves, sort the clothes and accessories you actually use. Note the items that need hanging length, folded space, drawers or a dedicated shoe zone. This keeps the plan from spending precious space on storage you do not need.
Use hanging and vertical space well
6. Set hanging height for your longest clothes
Measure the longest garments you plan to hang, including the hanger, then leave enough clear space below them. IKEA’s US planning guidance gives rough examples of 39 inches for coats, 32 inches for shirts and blouses, 47 inches for short dresses and 75 inches for very long garments. These are planning examples from IKEA, not universal requirements; garment length and hanger style vary.
7. Consider two short-hang zones
If most of your hanging items are shirts, trousers or shorter garments, consider dividing hanging space into upper and lower sections. It can make better use of height than reserving the whole bay for short clothes, provided the lower rail remains comfortable to reach and the garments clear the floor or storage below.

8. Put storage beneath short garments
A divider or frame beneath a short-hang section can create useful lower space for shelves, drawers, boxes or trays. Choose the storage type for what it will hold: drawers for items you want enclosed, shelves for folded stacks, and boxes for contained or seasonal belongings.
9. Adjust shelf spacing to the contents
Arrange shelves around the actual mix of bulky sweaters, jeans and small folded items rather than using identical gaps everywhere. IKEA’s US guide estimates 10 inches for ten folded T-shirts and 12 inches for ten folded sweaters; treat these as rough examples, since folds and garment thickness differ.
10. Give folded clothes a defined zone
Use a drawer or a clearly bounded shelf area for sweaters, jeans and tees. A defined zone makes it easier to keep stacks from spreading into hanging or accessory space, and helps each category stay visible when you are getting dressed.
Make small items visible and easy to reach
11. Use mesh where visibility and airflow help
A mesh basket can make its contents visible and allow air circulation. IKEA US describes those features for a KOMPLEMENT basket, but fit is frame-specific: the cited basket measures 39 3/8 × 13 3/4 inches and fits only a PAX frame listed as 39 × 14 inches. Its rail is sold separately. Check the exact local listing and frame before buying.

12. Contain small accessories in boxes
Use small boxes inside a drawer or on a shelf to separate items such as socks, scarves or accessories. IKEA Canada’s PAX organization guidance lists SKUBB and KOMPLEMENT storage options. Search for “SKUBB storage boxes” if you want that product family, then verify the product’s dimensions against the drawer or shelf you intend to use.
13. Add pull-out trays and dividers for accessories
Trays with fitted compartments can give belts, ties, watches or jewelry a dedicated place instead of letting them tangle together. Confirm that the tray is designed for your exact frame width and depth, and account for any rail or hardware it requires.
14. Put daily-use items within easy reach
Place the clothes and accessories you reach for most often at a comfortable height and near the most accessible part of the closet. Reserve less convenient shelves for things used only occasionally.
15. Store seasonal items higher, if safe to reach
Labeled boxes on a higher shelf can keep occasional or out-of-season clothes out of the daily-use zone. Use this approach only where you can retrieve the boxes safely; do not make a high shelf the home for heavy items you cannot handle securely.

16. Size every box to its destination
Measure the clear inside width, depth and height of the shelf or frame before buying boxes. IKEA systems and accessory ranges are not universally interchangeable, and product dimensions can vary by region.
17. Create one accessory zone
Group scarves, belts and small bags in one defined area rather than scattering them across shelves. A tray, box or basket can work; choose according to whether you want the contents visible, separated or concealed.

18. Reserve a lower zone for shoes
Keep shoes together on a lower shelf or in a dedicated organizer so they do not compete with folded clothes. Measure footwear and the available depth before choosing a solution.
19. Allow extra height for boots
Check the height of your tallest boots before setting shelf spacing. A shoe area sized only for flats or trainers may not accommodate them without rearranging other storage.

20. Keep long garments in a clear hanging bay
Give coats, long dresses and other long clothes a section with enough unobstructed hanging length. Avoid placing a shelf or box directly beneath the garments if it causes hems to bunch or crease.
Choose an open, closed or mixed layout
21. Go open when seeing everything matters most
An open wardrobe can make garments easy to see and retrieve, and it avoids hinged-door clearance. The trade-off is that clothes and accessories stay on view, so consistent grouping and tidy shelves matter more.
22. Add doors when you want a more concealed look
Doors hide the contents, but the choice affects the room footprint and access. Check the swing space for hinged doors or the track requirements for sliding doors before settling on a frame and position.
23. Mix open and closed storage
Combine visible hanging or shelves for daily essentials with enclosed sections or boxes for items you would rather conceal. IKEA’s planning guidance recognizes open, closed and mixed wardrobe approaches; choose the balance that suits your access needs and room.

Check the plan and product fit before buying
25. Use the planner, then verify every dimension
IKEA Australia’s PAX planner starts with room measurements and storage needs, then lets users select frames, doors and KOMPLEMENT organizers. Bring your measurements and storage list to the planner; before checkout, recheck every organizer’s width and depth against the exact frame and your local IKEA product listing. IKEA Belgium’s guide, for example, groups add-ons by 100, 75 and 50 cm frame widths, illustrating why a product from one frame size or market should not be assumed to fit another.
Product names, dimensions, availability and assortments vary by country and can change. IKEA’s planning dimensions and product descriptions are guidance, not independent tests; no specific percentage or amount of space saved is established for these ideas.
